• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

After four years, we have decided to close down Sixth Station. The site has meant so much to many of us who spent countless hours into our game. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our game.

The 101-Fall Hunger Games are wrapping up. You have 24-48 hours to enter the final posts. Members can still post in the "History of Sixth Station" and the "Connection" forums.

Once again, there had been reporters outside their home in the Victor's Village. Once again, the sole female Victor of District 12 was being hounded about her opinion about... something. Maybe about the newest Victor, who knew? But Birch Malachite didn't feel like dealing with the spotlight again - he had been forced to sit through many interviews when his sister won and had decided it was simply not for him.

So today, he had chosen to escape to the pier. Some of the best places for being alone where when you were surrounded by people - ideally those that wouldn't pay you too much attention. Besides, there were some good views here and the sea lions were funny enough.

Birch bought an ice cream cone from a nearby stall and sat down, enjoying it as he watched the waves. One good thing about Ash winning was the extra money, really. But before he had licked his ice cream more than twice, a seagull swooped down and took it. At least, it tried to take it, but Birch had his ice cream in an iron grip and fought against the waterfowl with all the might he could muster. "Give it back, you feathery rascal!"

When Uaithne left the house this morning, he didn’t expect to actually use the slingshot he brought with him. He had been messing with it before he left and then absentmindedly stuck it in his pocket. It wasn’t something he really used much. Only had it out because he had been cleaning. It reminded him too much of . . . of things he may prefer to forget.

But instinct kicked in when he saw some seagull attacking a kid. Before he could process what he was doing, the slingshot had already fired. The weapon reverberated in his hands as he watched the rock thump squarely against the seagull’s skull. The gull dropped without a sound.

Birch kept struggling, until the bird dropped dead quite suddenly. At least, he assumed it was dead, for it had just plopped to the ground and was not moving. Sadly, it had managed to drop the ice cream, though Birch still held the cone. He looked at the bird - how had it died? A stroke? Over ice cream? Now that would be an interesting story.

The teen looked more closely at it, but it was smeared with the ice cream and he couldn't see anything, so he looked around - wondering if anyone was trying to fathom why a bird had dropped dead while attacking a kid - only to see a young man with a slingshot a few feet away, looking in his direction.

Umm, wait, had he killed the bird? He seemed vaguely familiar, though Birch wasn't entirely sure. There were too many famous people in the world, really. Still, he wanted to know, if only just to sate his curiosity. "Umm... excuse me, did you kill the bird?"

Uaithne didn’t want to think that he had killed anything at all. But he probably did. The thought shivered through him and then he reminded himself that it was a bird and not a person. Birds died for people’s meals and no one batted an eye.

“Probably,” Uaithne said. “I mean. I hit it with the slingshot. It’s probably dead.”

"Err... thanks for saving me, I guess. I probably should have let go of the ice cream sooner." Birch sighed, looking wistfully at a vendor a few feet away, though it was probably best if he didn't get any more. At least until he was somewhere closed where he couldn't get pecked to death.

The teen was about to leave when he decided to ask one more question. "Why are you carrying a slingshot?" he queried, curious. People didn't ordinarily carry weapons - only Peacekeepers did, right?

Uaithne realized when the boy said that that he was still carrying his slingshot around. If he were five, no one would have batted an eye. But he wasn’t. And it probably wouldn’t be wise for people to think that he was arming himself. Perhaps if he were faster of mind and tongue he could come up with something clever to say, something witty that would cover his ass at the same time. But he wasn’t, so he slipped the slingshot into the pocket of his sweatshirt and said,

“Do you want some more ice cream? I’ll get you some to replace what the gull stole.”
