Cara stared down at the bow. She'd found it a few days ago, but left it where it was. After all, it wasn't really stolen if it was still in the house was it? But the fact was it was still taken from where it belonged, by the boy who was now living in the Victor manor she'd grown up in. Who'd entered to steal, from what she could understand. Oh, there was more to it than that. And Cara didn't really think badly of the new addition to the household.

But she didn't really trust him either.

She slowly picked up the bow from Sebastian's hiding spot. Her brows furrowed as a few dark strands of hair that had come free of her ponytail brushed against her cheeks and she stared at the weapon for a moment. She almost put the weapon right back. Her father trusted Sebastian...and that was all that mattered wasn't it? What right did she have to spy on him and doubt him? He'd done nothing to make her doubt his intentions.

But maybe it was how intensely she'd watched the Games over the years. Gone back over the old games when she had a chance. To help train. It had done more than help her learn about fighting...or what she might have to know to survive in an arena. It had shown her how easy it was for people to lose themselves. To break their word and their promises under stress. To lie from the beginning. To manipulate.

Cara knew if she ever went into the arena, no matter how much she trained...she was dead. She might enjoy running, climbing. Exerting herself. She loved the weapons she got to use and the effort involved in learning them and sparring with them. She could be fiercely competitive about it, and she dedicated herself to training. People assumed she was bloodthirsty or even cold because she didn't talk much and veered away from conversation. But she knew, deep down, she didn't possess the kind of heart that would survive killing another person or living creature.

Footsteps. Someone was coming.

She shook herself and looked around the basement. For a good place to hide. there was a row of boxes in the corner, and she carefully circled around them, before finally crouching so she couldn't be seen by someone entering the room, She set the bow on the ground next to her. Her long green and brown jacket was dark enough it wouldn't stand out even if someone did get a glimpse of her. She barely breathed as she listened to whomever it was get closer.

If it was her brother she might take the opportunity to scare him. If it was her dad...well maybe she'd stay hidden. She didn't want to explain why she felt guilty enough to hide in the first place. If it was Sebastian...

Well then she'd get to see how he reacted to the bow going missing.

Sebastian supposed that someone could say that he had started training.

He supposed this was the case in mechanics purely. It was almost daily that he snuck down to the basement and practiced with the bow. Just for an hour or so... And then he would hide it again and go back to checking on the animals, which he had developed a certain fondness for, or hiding in the library, or back to work as a courier (if he had some nearby deliveries to make), or... very occasionally, hiding up on that balcony on the second floor.

But it wasn't with the intent of fighting. No, it was with the intent of distraction. The bow was difficult and required focus - focus on something other than himself. Focus on positioning the arrow - on aiming correctly - on shooting. Originally, he had seen it as a source of food - a way to hunt and poach animals to sell illegally. Now, it was something to do to keep his hands from doing what he knew he wanted so badly.

If he wasn't focusing on something at times, there was a desire - a need for pain. He deserved it, he figured, for allowing Orsino to go as he did. He deserved every ounce of pain that he got... which was maybe why he accepted being kicked out so easily after the boy's death. So he guessed he deserved to be unable to act - to speak - to communicate to Orsino. He guessed he deserved that pain.

It was times like these when such thoughts flooded and took over his mind that he went to the basement. He moved to find the bow where he had hidden it and... It was gone. This made no sense... None of the others seemed particularly interested in the bow. Perhaps someone had moved it? He checked the other areas nearby quickly, but found nothing.

He became more frantic as he looked for it in the surrounding areas. Nothing - nothing - nothing... Though, he stopped, finding a small hunting knife, not unlike the one that Orsino had in the Games... not unlike the one that that girl from Nine had stabbed him to death with. There was a fumbling as he took it out of the leather covering. Most of his knives were smaller and more compact to accommodate the need to be hidden easily in his boots and belt when out and about as a courier.

His fingers were shaking, pressing to the blade in almost a sense of caressing it. He wondered, almost curiously, how wounds felt on Orsino. How much they hurt... And this wondering was what he needed to focus away from with the bow - but, but, but... He moved his hand, remembering the cut on the back of Orsino's wrist that went half-way up to his elbow... or, at least, he thought there was one there. Orsino had changed his bandages enough that he could recognize some of his wounds. He stuffed some of his shirt into his mouth, wadded up in a ball.

He started to press the knife before pulling it back and throwing it down on a table with a clatter as he spat out his shirt from his mouth, breathing heavily. No, no. Closer to him or not, Orsino wouldn't have wanted to see him hurt, but it was so, so tempting.

Cara waited until the footsteps had moved passed her, before slowly peering around the corner of one of the boxes. She quickly moved back, her back against the box, her dark eyes staring at the wall. Sebastian. She looked down at the bow she'd set down next to her with a troubled frown. She could hear him moving around things. He must have realized the bow was missing. Then the movement stopped and, curiosity overcame her. She moved, as slowly as she was able, to peer around the edge of the box again.

Watched him pick up the knife. She glanced towards the door. What if he looked behind the boxes for the bow? Maybe she should make a run for it. His back was to her, and she stood very slowly. If he looked behind the boxes and found the box so be it. She didn't want to be caught hiding it from him and-

She froze, her eyes widening and shock rooting her in place. Her mind didn't even comprehend what was happening until the knife hit the table and she jumped at the sound.

"What are you doing?" she asked in a shocked whisper, her eyes locked on his arm. Where he'd been...it looked like he'd been about to...

Sebastian stopped at the whisper. It was low, but even with one bad ear, he could still hear it in the relative silence of the room. He shifted, looking to see the girl - Cara, if he remembered correctly At least, he thought that was her name from what other members of the house had been talking like... He had not exactly spoken with her before, however.

"I... I... umm..." He looked back at the knife and covered it before shoving it back into the place it had come from. "Just wanted to - to - to see... uh... something." He moved to wipe his hand at his skin. Red, a little, and some skin torn, but not broken. No, not enough to draw blood. He was trying to ignore the shaking that had settled in his hands - his fingers now.

"It's nothing." He said quickly. Sebastian felt the guilt settle in him, swelling and filling in him like it so often had about his inability to save Orsino - his inability to even really move on it seemed... and now... now... his inability to even keep himself safe. Maybe he had never said a word about the third, but he shouldn't have had to. Maybe he needed to... "Cara, right?"

Didn't look like nothing. Cara watched him with guarded concern. Her arms crossing over her chest nervously as she slowly nodded. She didn't want to look up. She wanted to turn around and walk out. Go up the stares and start avoiding Sebastian more. There was something wrong here. Something wrong with what he'd almost done. Something wrong with him needing to stay there. She raised her face and watched his eyes as she moved back towards the boxes and hopped up to sit down on one.

"Sebastian. Right?" she replied quietly. Her candid expression made it clear she didn't believe anything he'd just said, as did the way her eyes moved back to the knife thoughtfully before snapping back to the older boy's face.

If he'd lied about what he was doing though, she doubted he'd confide in her. A stranger really. But the whole thing made her more worried about him. And she decided maybe Sebastian needed to be followed for reasons other than to protect her family from whatever mystery may still shroud who he was and what he might want.

"Were you looking for something?" She asked instead.

He nodded carefully at that question. Yes. Sebastian. Yes, the name that all of Panem knew from Orsino for a few short days. In time, it would be any other name for all of them - even already was for those who never cared for the boy as a contender in the Games.

"Umm... the bow?" He said, hesitating in saying as much - or in really calling it his. Sure, he used it and it seemed like he was the only one that used it... But it belonged to them, no? "Have you seen it?"

And then there was the little problem of looking for more than that. But what was he looking for, really? The bow? Or something else? Maybe he should find Krieger again - talk to him. It wouldn't be hard with how often he frequented the house. "No... I umm... nevermind." He was shuffling around, back through the cabinets to find something else - anything else. "Just need to distract myself is all."

She watched him quietly for a moment, her dark eyes shadowed before glancing to the side. The bow. She'd known that of course. And she hadn't really expected him to lie about it...so why bother asking? Her hands gripped the box to either side of her, her nails lightly tapping the edges.

He was using the bow as a distraction? She glanced at the knife again. Was that a distraction too?

"You're training then?" she asked as she looked back up at him. If what he wanted was a distraction...well. She hopped down from the box and quickly moved to where he'd put the knife. Looked down at it, before looking back at him. "You want to train with me for a bit?"

She picked up the knife, the familiar weight of it making her feel a bit better. Like she could figure things out better with the weapon in her hands. Maybe if she trained with him for a bit, she'd get to know him a bit more. And she could ask him what he'd really been doing? Maybe. Or maybe she never needed to ask that.

Sebastian looked at her. Yes, if he remembered right, she was the one who did this a bit more often. He nodded carefully before closing the cabinet he had opened up and then opening a different one. He had two knives on him at the moment, more out of habit than anything else... But he wasn't sure he wanted the family knowing about those that he had carried around yet.

He found a knife in the cabinet that was a bit smaller and thinner, but still rather sturdy - more his style as far as knives went. "Umm... sure." That question about training or not... well, he could say no, but that would bring her back to asking what he was doing, then. That was not a question he wanted to answer. Not yet, anyway. He wasn't sure he was ready to admit it - just like he wasn't ready to say that Orsino was dead. Saying things just made them all so much more real.

"But... umm... how do we start?" He asked, honestly unsure about what that answer would be. "I mean, I haven't really been doing this for that long so I don't know..." He had used knives before as a courier for the Black Market. The job itself entailed carrying around expensive things and he had gotten into his fair few fights over the past few years that he worked as one. He supposed one would expect this to mean that he might have been penalized, but that was the funny thing about being a courier for the Black Market. No one wanted to go to a doctor or a Peacekeeper and say that they were stabbed because they were trying to steal something from one as himself. That would probably only get them whipped half to death.

Cara wondered how he'd learned how to use the bow. It wasn't an easy weapon to use, at least she hadn't found it so. Of course, she'd never seen him use it. Maybe he was as bad with it as she was. A small prideful bit of her hoped he was at least. She'd surely been trying with one longer than he had unless he had previous experience.

She put the knife she was holding back down and moved to the cabinet he'd chosen. Standing on her tip toes, she reached to grab a few more such blades.

"We can try with throwing them first," she said with a brief smile before turning towards the wall. She flipped the knife around so she caught it deftly by the blade.

Cara had never taught anyone anything before. Particularly not training. She was a little nervous at the notion actually, but at least this method would allow her to keep her distance from him a bit, and still give her an excuse to talk to him and maybe understand him more.

She wasn't really good at talking much either. So instead she help the knife out towards the wall, staring for a moment and holding the knife in her hand for a moment before throwing the knife. The blade sank into the wall with a sharp 'thunk' and she turned towards Sebastian, staring at him expectantly.

Throwing knives... He could do. He was more used to using them with his hands, but there had been the rare occasion where distance played a factor. So he wasn't entirely foreign to this. Just more than he was with the bow at this point, given his recent practice. He shifted the knife in his hand to a more suitable position before throwing it. It certainly hit the wall, but it didn't stick as it pressed against the side and fell to the floor with a clatter. Expected, really. Just because he had done it before did not mean he did it often... or well when he did do it.

He moved forward to grab the knives, glancing to the cabinets and wondering if they should just take out more from there instead of moving to retrieve these every five minutes. With this thought in mind, he moved to the cabinet after retrieving them. He took out all the knives he could find - and they were of a decent number, really.

"How long have you been training?" Even in his sadness and in how shaken he was at Orsino's death - at his actions only moments ago - he was a naturally talkative person. Friendly and charming, even... He just, of course, needed to adjust a bit more to this... drastic change in lifestyle.

Not a bad throw. He didn't handle the knives fearfully, she thought, and he threw with the confidence of someone who knew they weren't about to cut their own finger off by accident. Flipping the other knife she'd grabbed in her hand, she looked over at Sebastian before turning back towards the wall.

"About five years," she said, before tossing the second knife. It hit the wall and stuck like the first one had. Neither had hit exactly where she'd intended, but they hadn't been that far off either. "You just started? After you got here?" she asked, still watching the wall instead of Sebastian.

After the Games. After Orsino had died. Her brows furrowed. He'd gotten far. Ten had been good in the games recently. Elspeth had won in the 99th Games. Now Orsino got so far in one of the Quells. She turned the final knife in her hands, watching it spin as she tried to shake off the melancholy mood that fell over her. Ten kids didn't really get training. So it wasn't like they really should have had a shot. But they were doing good, recently at least. Somehow.

He took two of the knives he had grabbed from the cabinet and threw it. This one stuck solidly with a slight thud now. "Yes." He considered for a moment the thought of telling her... Well, it could not hurt, he supposed. He was sure they knew that his job was not one of the kind that was particularly flattering. But, then again, not many jobs were particularly flattering. More than once, Orsino had trouble washing off all the blood that had gotten on him at the slaughterhouse. "I know how to fight with knives, but for reasons other than training... and not like this, usually."

"The bow's a... new addition, I guess." It was hard to explain, but true. It was new... At least, though, he seemed to be doing all right with it. It helped to think back to the previous Games - the recent ones. Wheatley and Peronelle, after all, had both gotten far and seemed quite good with bows, for their part. Maybe he could not reliable use it in a fight just yet, but he figured he should not be thinking like that. Orsino wouldn't have wanted him to think like that anyway.

Other than training huh? Cara decided she'd have to follow Sebastian a little more diligently to find out exactly what that meant. Not simply because she was concerned, so much as she was curious and not feeling quite extroverted enough to ask.

She looked back where the knife had hit the wall, and threw her third knife. Cara might have been content to just silently train, but she pushed herself to speak more than she might have normally, as she walked forward to retrieve the knives she'd thrown.

"Why the bow?" She found herself asking. "It's not really...the easiest thing to learn. If it's just for a distraction...why not something simpler?"

She felt a little flustered making herself talk to much. But it helped that she didn't have to look at him, and was busy freeing the weapons.

Sebastian considered the question. He didn't want to go into the original intentions he had with the bow - aside from that requiring he admitted that he knew more about the Black Market than he should... Well, Sebastian did not quite think he could deal with talking about Orsino's death so directly yet and, even if he could, he could not deal with actively talking about how close Orsino had gotten.

"Well, that's the point. It... it requires a lot of focus on something that's not..." That wasn't what he had come so close to only moments before. That wasn't Orsino. That wasn't watching him slowly, but surely meet his death on national television in this very house. "It allows me to think about something a little less depressing. A little more... normal, I guess. In comparison to everything else anyway." Well, as normal as it could get seeing as he was now surrounded by pets and taken in by a family that wasn't really what he was used to.

He waited for her to move away from the wall before tossing his third knife, which stuck again, but was far off from his intended target area. Well, at least it was sticking.

Cara's brows drew together and she looked at the knife in her hands as she waited to the side, listening to the sound of the throwing knife hit the wall. She knew what he meant. She understood the words, and glanced cautiously over at the other boy before turning her attention back to the wall. Distractions...distractions were good. But she had to disagree with some of what Sebastian had said, and it wasn't until she'd thrown another knife at the wall that she managed to disagree out loud.

"What's so great about normal?" She balanced a knife in her hands, her eyes focused on the spot on the wall she was aiming for. She glanced at him before turning back to her target and hurling her weapon. "And anyway, I'd think illegally training with a weapon you stole seems pretty far from normal."

The knife hit the wall, very close to her targeted area. She frowned and turned to give Sebastian her full attention now, her dark eyes troubled. "Unless you're saying this sort of behavior IS normal for you?"
