ooc//

I'm saying this is about two/three days after the Madd/Seb thread, btw. //

Sebastian felt his mind returning to that puzzle box again. Just a week and a half more and it would be Orsino's birthday. He wasn't sure what he was going to do with it. It remained a haunting object of the past that did happen and the future that would never be. It was fitting, he guessed, that the Games had become their own puzzle box with Orsino trapped inside... Except he couldn't work himself out of that puzzle.

He almost wanted to get rid of it - to rid himself of that idea that so taunted his existence. But he hated himself for it... and, besides, getting rid of that box would not remove the love that was both always there and yet never would be.

Still, he found himself itching to find that box and... it wasn't here. It wasn't anywhere he had put it. He was frantic, going through his dresser for the third time before looking around and under the bed. "Coffee!" He almost whined as he turned to look around the tiny bunny's cage. "Any idea where the box is?" No, probably not. Aside from the fact that Coffee was a bunny, she had also only been here for one day. It made knowing what he was even talking about highly unlikely.

He could feel the spiraling in his mind. Feel it slow and grating as his stomach twisted. If he couldn't so much as keep a puzzle box safe, how could he move on like Orsino wanted him to? He let out a choked squeak at the thought and frantically looked in the closet, shuffling through the shelves and the clothes with a greater sense of urgency now.

Bolt wasn't quite sure what to make of this whole situation with Sebastian. The kid had been staying for nearly two weeks in one of the spare rooms, and everything seemed to be working out fine. He got on well enough with the rest of the family, and while he was clearly still grieving, Bolt hadn't caught the kid having any more serious breakdowns or things like that. He was a bit concerned, though, about his finding a permanent place to live. If Bolt had his way, the kid would stay here until they'd gotten him a real job--whatever it was he did, Bolt wasn't sure he wanted to know. If it had to do with breaking & entering and selling items...well, that gave him enough of an idea. Not a good job for anybody, not in Ten. And without a real job and a reliable income, how was the kid supposed to pay rent or buy food? No, if Bolt had his way, they'd keep Sebastian on as long as they could--the kid wasn't posing any problems, so why not?

This was the rather sensitive subject Bolt had decided to broach with the boy that day when he returned from work. Cara and Xavier were missing as usual, Zen was probably out running errands, and god knew what Twist was up to--there seemed to be more animals in the house than ever, and Bolt wasn't sure if they were his brother's or his kids' or if they had all decided to flock here because of some mystical animal calling, but they were everywhere. Sebastian, he figured, was either in the basement or his room, and the basement was empty, so he headed upstairs.

The door was open, and even from the hallway, Bolt could hear the sound of things being shuffled around. He poked his head into the room, leaning against the doorframe, to see what the ruckus was about. His eyes fell on the desk, and his brow furrowed in confusion. It was covered in...toys. Puzzles. What the hell was the kid doing with puzzles? And why so many? Bolt glanced towards the closet where the kid was rummaging around, and it struck him--had he been out stealing again? Was that how (or why?) he had acquired the stuff all over the desk? He felt a sort of desperate annoyance that the kid still felt the need to steal despite the fact that he was being provided for--whatever he would get for these toys, whatever collector he was going to sell to, it wasn't worth getting caught and thrown in jail, or worse.

"Sebastian," Bolt said loudly, to make the boy aware he was in the room. "What are you doing?"

Sebastian whipped around in the closet, almost tempted to tear down all the hangers of clothes to see if that would help at this point. "I'm trying to find this, this thing called a puzzle box. It's just umm... light and medium brown from the wood and sort of about this size." He demonstrated the size with his hands as he stepped out of the closet, shutting it behind him before shuffling quickly over to the desk frantically. He felt like he was breathing too fast. How could he have lost that?

"It doesn't open up normally. You have to - you have to find a key in the - in the box and open it up that way." He had moved to the dresser again, starting on the top drawer as he was shuffling through it. "It should have something rattling inside that I - that I put there for safe keeping." And it would probably not be pulled out until he was ready for it - because something told him that doing that right about now would just re-open the same wounds that were here now.

He supposed a few weeks ago, he would have just chalked it up to Orsino finding it and already trying to open it up... But right now - right now... He ran his fingers through his hair. No wonder he's dead because of you. If you can't keep a hold of a damn box, how could you keep hold of a living person? The thought made his stomach tighten as he thought of it.

Bolt watched the boy ripping his clothes out of the closet with growing concern. He was missing something, clearly, and he was going on about some kind of puzzle box and how you opened it, and there was something inside it...Bolt didn't know if he wanted to know what was inside it. Money? A weapon of some sort? Something the kid had stolen--if he hadn't stolen the whole box itself?

He frowned and stepped fully into the room, holding up his hands to try and stop Sebastian's frantic search. "Whoa, just...hold on," he said. "First of all, are you sure you brought it here? It's not...still at home?" He didn't want to imply the kid had stolen whatever box--give him the benefit of the doubt, at least.

"And if it's here, it has to be in the house somewhere," he added calmly. "But before we go tearing the place apart...why don't you tell me what's so important about this box and whatever's inside it?"

Sebastian stopped, reluctantly, but haltingly as he stared at Bolt. He stopped, staring at the man. How did he explain what it was? It'd sound crazy - wouldn't it? Most likely. Probably. No, definitely yes. Definitely yes. But what else could he say other than the truth? Anything else would make no sense and - and...

"It was Orsino's." He said quickly, hoping that saying it quickly would make it easier to say. This was not the case because saying it was like trying to speak through molasses. "Or it was supposed to be, anyway. I got it for his nineteenth birthday before he - um - because he..." He cursed low under his breath, looking down at his hands quickly. "Couldn't be anywhere else. It's always right on the desk because I can never really look at it, let alone touch it and..."

He was pacing back and forth by now, almost twitching. "Can't save a man, so I apparently definitely can't take care of a box." It made sense, right? No, probably not, but Sebastian did not care. As it was, it took all his effort not to hit his head repeatedly against a wall.

Ah...Orsino's. The pieces suddenly clicked into place--of course the boy would be frantic. Any piece of memorabilia you had from a person you had lost was precious. He dropped his hands, running one over his face as he sighed. Clearly, this talk was not going to happen, at least not right now. Not until they'd found the damn box, or it seemed Sebastian was incapable of logic.

His last comment made Bolt frown, both confused and concerned. That smacked of guilt--and of course, Sebastian would feel guilty for being alive when Orsino was not. That was normal. But the way he said it--can't save a man--sounded as though he felt a lot more responsible than he clearly was.

This was going to be a long talk.

"Okay," he said after a moment. "Okay...let's just find the box first. Where have you looked? When did you last move it? When did you last see it? Would Cara or Xavier have borrowed it--have you talked to them?"

Sebastian sighed, his eyes searching around the room again, back to the desk. "I've looked everywhere in this room... I haven't even touched it since - since..." He frowned as he thought carefully. "Since someone came around to visit a few days ago." He could remember distinctly just because of how few times he actually even looked at the damn thing, let alone actually touched it.

"Cara and Xavier don't know anything about it." Now that he thought about it, Maddox was the only one that knew that these were Orsino's things... at least, directly. If they remembered much about Orsino saying he liked puzzles in his interview - if they knew what a puzzle star was - if they remembered all of that... Then perhaps they would assume that these things belonged to Orsino. This, however, he found was unlikely.

"Unless a dog came in and took it... But I don't leave the door open often much." He didn't lock the door, but he did keep it closed, especially keeping in mind that he did not quite like the idea of the animals having free reign with his room...

Bolt thought for a moment--he knew Cara and Xavier weren't the type to go nosing around in Sebastian's things, especially unwarranted, and as far as he knew, the three of them got along well enough. Even if they were curious, his kids were, at least, more like to ask than to just take things. He'd made pretty sure of that--or at least, he hoped.

The dog thing, that was plausible. The dogs were the masters of this house, and they knew it, too--they might very well have taken something of Sebastian's, but he had his doubts about a box. Seemed too cumbersome for a dog to carry around in its mouth. Still, it was one of the only things he had to go on.

"Okay, let's look around the house, then," he said, nodding towards the door. "In case the dogs carried it out. I had something to talk to you about, anyway."

He headed back out towards the hallway, wondering where exactly to start--guilt, job, dead boyfriend, missing box...

Mysterious visitor seemed pretty neutral.

"Who came to visit?" he asked, poking his head into a bathroom, but of course, there was no wooden box in there. The dogs weren't really keen on hiding their prizes in the bathrooms in general.

Sebastian followed Bolt back out into the hallway. He guessed the dogs were the best bet, then. He made a note to close the door behind him - he would clean up the mess that was in there later. Sebastian had half a mind to deflect that question. How did he explain that Orsino apparently had a half-brother he'd never gotten the chance to meet without sounding more than mildly naive? And, that besides, it felt too close to Orsino himself... But he also felt as a guest and, while deflecting such a question would go unheeded if he wasn't essentially free-loading off the Arcadias, did not want to pose such a strong inconvenience.

"This kid who is actually Orsino's brother. Maddox, I think, except he was actually adopted and had about all the documentation on it." Now that he had time to think about it several days later, he found it a bit odd that the boy managed to get all the information even on Orsino's various homes throughout his life. But, then again, there were ways one could get that... and it looked like the information that was on there was correct, if only based on his knowledge of Jethro and a handful of other homes. "He certainly knew how to research anyway..." To be fair, his enthusiasm and questions, while a bit shattering to him still, might have been considered almost adorable if not for recent events.

Sebastian felt himself moving down the hall more than consciously walked and wandered into a study, looking around the area carefully. "Where would the dogs hide things?" He was not particularly sure he liked the idea of crying at how well the appearance of an old brother - half-brother or whatever - re-opened such fresh wounds for him.

Bolt pushed open the door to the study, peering around, but the place wasn't exactly the neatest; it might take some looking around to see if there was anything truly out of place, if what they were looking for was here. He had just leaned down to look under a desk when Sebastian's words registered, and his attention snapped back to the boy.

"What?" he said in surprise, his brow furrowing as he eyed Sebastian. Half-brother? That was the first Bolt had heard of it--even when he had seen Orsino, shortly before the boy volunteered, he hadn't mentioned any blood relatives--only a foster family. Though, if the boy had been adopted, it was certainly possible his older brother hadn't even known about him. Which only made the whole thing even sadder.

"What did he want from you?" Bolt asked, both confused and concerned. Meeting Orsino's actual brother had to have been difficult on his foster brother, and more troubles were the last thing that the kid needed at the moment.

"Er, anywhere they can reach, I guess," he said as he turned his attention back to their quest. He checked under the desk, at last, but there was nothing there; there were some papers on top, and he sifted through them a bit idly, more absorbed in Sebastian's odd encounter with this mysterious brother than he was in the quest for the missing box.

Sebastian started to look around the bookshelves, trying not to think about what the implications of seeing Orsino's brother - a real brother - appear like this to him. He could barely deal with seeing glimpses of him on the television - even with picking up some of his puzzles sometimes set him into tiny fits of crying. Sure, they were only for a few minutes, but that didn't change that they happened. Could he deal with Maddox showing up again? Maybe... Maybe not. Maybe the reason he had dealt well with the boy's appearance at all was because it was so... sudden.

He had started crying after picking up that puzzle box.

"He just wanted to ask some questions, I think." He shrugged, as if it didn't matter. Of course, it did. Anything about Orsino mattered to Sebastian. "Asked what he was like... you know, if he was like how he was in the Games and if... if he did well in school... Things like that." Things that you wouldn't know just from watching.

"I told him to get his blood checked periodically too, just in case. But he's a half-brother and that... that sounds like a one in a million thing that was wrong with Orsino anyway. I... I hope he doesn't need to worry." Again, he was reminded so much of how Orsino had broken down after learning of his illness. It was heart-breaking to watch someone so strong like that. But he swallowed, looking now to another bookshelf, trying not to think of the boy, but feeling him already fill his mind.

Bolt stopped rifling through the papers and gave his full attention to Sebastian. He had to admit, it was bizarre; Orsino went to the arena and died, and then suddenly, there appears a mysterious half-brother with tons of documentation who has questions about the kid and...whether he did well in school? He frowned and set the papers back down on the desk again.

"Did you get a look at the, er...documents he had?" he asked as he moved to check under a chair in the corner. No box. Dust bunnies galore; must speak to Twist about getting that Avox to dust in here.

He nodded approvingly when Sebastian informed him he'd told the boy to get his blood checked. It was sound advice--even if it was one in a million, what had gone on with Orsino. It was still genetic, and the odds...well, the odds could be in your favor one day and not the next, as proved every year at the Reaping.

"That was good," he said, watching as Sebastian checked the bookshelves. "And nice of you." It was quite decent, actually, since there couldn't have been much documentation on the possibility of the half-brother having the disease; the kid probably wouldn't even have thought to get himself checked.

"I don't know that it's in here," he said after a moment. "Next room."

Sebastian nodded at the man before going out to the hallway and to the next room carefully, picking one that was only maybe ten feet away or so. "Yeah, I got a look at the documents he had." This looked more like a room for animals - namely snakes and fish with what looked to be a thermostat on one end of the room, probably to monitor heat. He moved forward to look in areas of pet food to see if it was maybe stashed somewhere in there.

"He just had a few about himself - same last name at birth, then was adopted when he was pretty young." So the same mother, almost definitely not the same father, however. They had a strong resemblance, but not so strong. "He had a few on Orsino too, actually. I'm not sure how he got them, but I know I recognized some of the names of the previous foster homes because... umm, Orsino sometimes talked about them."

Jethro.

He had already stopped by near that house twice. It looked like it was probably that one.

"Not just the one he mentioned in the arena either, so it at least looked legitimate." Either Maddox did a lot of research and was good at it... Or he was undergoing an extensive, elaborate, and ill-advised prank. The research part of it was honestly much, much more likely.

One of the animal rooms--Bolt knew they were grasping at straws in this one, but if the boy was really so desperate to find the box, they might as well look everywhere. There was no use telling him it was no use, because that never made anyone feel better; better they look for it and didn't find it. Then, at least, they could say they had looked. And who knew, perhaps one of the dogs really had dragged it off. It was one of the only explanations Bolt could think of, besides someone having actually taken it from the room, and there were only so many suspects in the house. Though--the Avox, Bolt had not yet thought to ask. But he hated to go around accusing people--if they didn't find it, then perhaps he could find a way to pose the question.

Or get Twist to do it. It was his Avox, after all.

He pulled a curious face when Sebastian mentioned the other kid had had documents on Orsino. That was a bit odd, even if the boy was his brother. It usually took a while--and a lot of trouble--to get your hands on that sort of thing, sort of like medical records. But then, Bolt supposed if the kid had come to him and been able to prove he was Orsino's brother and desperately wanted to see his brother's medical records, he probably would have handed them over, and consequences be damned. The kid was dead, had died in front of the entire country, and no one else seemed to be looking for information on him; why not give it to the people who really wanted it?

Or the kid could have stolen the information. Apparently, thievery was rampant in Ten, just based on how many times their house had been broken into. And now they were housing one of the thieves, to boot, though Bolt always seemed to forget that was how this whole arrangement had begun.

"Sounds weird, but not much to gain by lying about it," Bolt said as he opened up a cabinet and found nothing but various bags and boxes of food for animals. "Did he move around a lot then?" he asked curiously. "Orsino, I mean." He headed for the door; there was nothing in here but pets, and he sure didn't want to go poking around in their cages.

He investigated parts of the room but... no, it definitely did not look anything close to the box that was so detailed and close in his mind's eye. He moved out of the room and to the next one. "He was in about seven other homes." This room looked a bit more like a tiny library room.

"He didn't remember much of the first two or so because he was too young. But he knew of the five homes he was in after he was about... five?" He shrugged, starting to look in the area again. Notably, there weren't a ton of the books on the bookshelves to sort through, at least. "Stayed in most of them for about a year. I think he stayed in two for about two years... Spent some time in between in the group home."

"Was nearly taken from us at sixteen by a wealthier family that liked him, actually." He added, more in passing than anything, though he remembered with some overwhelming sense of sadness about how he'd felt about the prospect of Orsino leaving. "He didn't want to leave, though." He remembered vaguely the sense of loss at the idea of losing him then - and that had just been after a few years and still when Sebastian had to struggle to get a sentence or a smile out of him.
