• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Sebastian had managed to find a friend's to stay at for the night. He did not typically like to take help - but the boy had owed him a favor and, well, it was just one night. With any luck, Sebastian might not have to worry about housing himself if Orsino came home.

He had managed to catch a glimpse of the Games in the square. There was going to be a feast... so, chances were, someone was coming home from those Games today. Most people were not working, he noticed, because of it. Someone from Ten had lived this long... well, it worth paying attention to. For Sebastian, he decided to use what time he could to figure out ways to make this work... in case... well, in case of the impossible.

He knew that he only barely made enough money to help support with that he was doing... So he would need a bit of a change in life direction. He knew that the hunters - the poachers - they got more money and managed to feed themselves quite well. So that made him think of learning to hunt. Orsino, he noticed, had managed to catch a few things with snares in his time and so had a few others... But something told him that hunting could help immensely too. But he could not simply hunt with knives. No, his best bet would be to get something like a spear or a bow and arrows to hunt with.

He had heard word some time ago - back during the Victor Games - that at least one victor had an array of weapons hidden in the basement of his house. A thief had attempted to steal and... well, failed. Perhaps if Sebastian was lucky enough, he could find a way to break in... and there would be at least his way to feed himself, if not make a bit of money as well. Illegal? Maybe, but Sebastian was used to doing illegal things.

He looked a bit of a mess - what with having to run out of the house the previous night and all... But otherwise rather normal. He took some comfort, at least, in knowing that all those who had killed any number of people were gone for the time being... And he still had a knife, which he used to pick the lock of the door at the back. He slowly slid inside of the place, sliding his knife into his belt for the time being as he ventured forth carefully, his eyes looking out for various places to hide.

He did manage to find the basement, despite the slight growling of a small, brown, furry dog that could fit cradled in one of his arms. He hissed through his teeth at the dog and took careful steps down into the basement. He needed to find... to find... something.

Bolt trotted up the stairs to the house, fumbling with his keys as he tried to hastily get the door open. He had taken a half-day at work, because of the end of the Games. Everywhere was closed, it seemed, and when he had walked through the Square to get home, it seemed most of the district was gathered there, camping out with their eyes glued to the screen. It had been a good year for Ten just a few years ago, and now they were close to victory again. Even Bolt could take time off from treating the sick and wounded to watch one of his own patients try and make it through the arena. Easy enough when anyone and everyone who could be sick or injured was watching TV instead.

He closed the door behind him as he came into the house. It was quiet, except for one of the dogs scampering around his feet, and a cat blinking at him from the railing of the stairs. He shook off the animals, dropping his briefcase in the entryway as he started towards the living room. He would have expected the kids, or Cara at least, to be watching already--they had the day off school, after all. But there was no one there. He grabbed the remote and flipped the TV on, but it was simply the commentators chatting and speculating, with a small picture of two of the tributes walking around in a corner.

"Cara!" he called over his shoulder. "Zen! Xavier!" The house was silent, except for the soft thud of another cat jumping out from behind the TV, apparently spooked by all the yelling. Bolt tossed the remote down and headed for the kitchen--but there was no one there, either. Odd. Perhaps Zen had taken the kids to the square to watch with everyone else--he had probably missed them in coming home. His best bet was probably to go back out and see if he could meet up with his wife and kids--there wasn't any noise coming from upstairs, so they were probably out.

He headed for the front door again, but before he went out, he turned his feet towards the basement stairs. Cara might just be training, trying to drown out the stress of the Games--he might as well double check and make sure he wasn't leaving his daughter alone. Here at the end, he didn't want his kids to have to watch other children slaughter their friends on national television. "Cara?" he called, pushing open the basement door and peering around.

Sebastian caught sight of a bow and a quiver of arrows on the wall. This... yes, this would do. He slung the quiver on, now bumping against the backpack with the bow in hand.

It was not until Sebastian heard a voice above that he went to hide in a corner, nestled between two large cabinets and a table. He moved carefully, crawling under the table even as the man entered the room. Carefully - slowly - slowly - and then he could hear the rough noise of his backpack scrapping underneath the table. A curse hissed under his breath and he practically sprang out from underneath the table, loading the bow with an arrow, fumbling and seeing the arrow clatter to the floor.

He cursed again, this time pressing a hand to the knife in his belt.

Bolt glanced around, but there was no sign of Cara. She was usually pretty easy to spot down here--she'd nearly taken his head off more than once when he walked in on her working with the weapons. But the whole house was quiet--they were all out, he was sure, watching the Games with friends. As they should. He was just bothered he wasn't with them; but he'd got to the square and try to track them down. He turned to go when he heard the noise--a shuffling or scraping, coming from one of the tables.

"Cara?" he called out, confused. But then, before he could really register what was going on, someone jumped out from under the table and was holding out..an empty bow? An arrow clattered to the floor, and he understood. The kid wasn't one he'd ever seen before, but he couldn't be that much older than Bolt's own kids--Cara's age or older, at first glance.

"Whoa, hey," he said, holding up his hands when the kid reached for his belt, presumably for some other weapon he'd concealed. Damnit, he was going to have to talk to Twist about keeping these weapons out in the relative open. This was the second time in recent weeks that someone had broken in and found themselves perusing the weaponry in the basement. He assumed the kid was after the weapons--he wasn't one of Cara's or Xavier's friends, and if he was, he wouldn't be trying to pull a bow on their father. And he might have rung the doorbell.

"No need for things to get violent," he said, his tone calm. He didn't intend to go running off calling the Peacekeepers in--not unless things did get violent. He was a kid after all--and Bolt knew firsthand how desperate some of the kids from Ten could get. He probably just needed to catch a break. "Why don't you just put the weapons down and tell me what you're doing here."

Sebastian looked at the man - feeling as if he should somehow recognize him but... no, no way was he the victor they had. Their one male victor was older than him... and off in the Capitol besides. He remembered from catching glimpses of him because Orsino had made it as far as he had.

"I'm just getting a few things I need." He wondered if his backpack would look oddly big... It did have a decent amount in it. Enough to tip the other one off that there were more than just school books in it? Enough to tip the man off that there may as well be another life in it because it was kind of all Sebastian had at the moment? Maybe. Maybe. Sebastian could honestly not be sure.

He shuffled awkwardly, his hand still pressed to his belt and only inches away from his knife. If he needed to fight the man, he would. But he knew it would not be wise to leave such blood behind. He shifted downward, snatching up the arrow that felt and putting it back into the quiver for the moment. He was careful to move steadily - prepared to dart away in case the man did seem like he would prove harmful.

Bolt tried to size the boy up quickly. He didn't look like he was underfed or injured or terribly dirty...but then, he might generally be quite a good thief, make himself a decent living, and he just happened to be having an off day. Or perhaps he was a kid only recently fallen on hard times, trying his hand at stealing and going for the big dogs first. He might not know what he was getting himself into. But the confidence in his answer, the way he didn't even try to put the weapons down, told a different story.

"Look, I'm not going to hurt you," he said calmly, keeping his distance so the kid wouldn't feel threatened and lash out. "And I'm not going to go call the Peacekeepers." Not yet, at least. "So why don't you just tell me why it is you need weapons, and then we'll take it from there."

Sebastian watched the man, his wariness still settled somewhere in his chest. "They can get me food and money if I use them correctly." He stated simply. He had stolen before - it was part of the courier job. Due to how far Orsino had gotten, he had thought no one would be here, even if they were related to a Victor themselves.

"Depending on how certain things go, I may be in need of both." As much as he hated to confront that possibility... Sebastian tried not to. No, he was just doing this to hold himself down until Orsino did get home. It was not accepting his death so much as accepting the fact that even if the Games finished today, it would take awhile for Orsino to come back... And Sebastian would have to take care of himself in the meantime. "But I will need them... at least, for a time." A short time, hopefully... Just a short time...

"Why don't you call the Peacekeepers?" He was moving gingerly, slowly edging towards the entrance while still attempting to be at least somewhat clear of the man himself. "I know I'm not the only one whose been here that hasn't had any officials called on."

Bolt frowned. The black market, then. Was that what the first break-in had been about, too? He couldn't imagine tons of kids were starting to train out in Ten, Eleven, and Twelve, not when they had things like feeding their families and staying alive in the pens to worry about. And as much as he'd have liked to get the weapons out of the house and out of his daughter's hands, he couldn't condone selling things illegally. Especially not when such an action could get this kid arrested or whipped or killed.

"There are other ways to go about that kind of thing," he said. "Though I know it probably doesn't seem like it right now. I don't know what position you're in here, son, but there are people who are willing to help." The group home, he knew some of the workers there--and while exhausted, they could be very kind. And if the kid was out stealing...he either didn't have a family, or else his couldn't take care of him.

He shook his head at the question about the Peacekeepers. Twist hadn't called them either. That was perhaps part of their problem--neither of the Arcadias could be that much of an asshole to a kid who just needed a leg up. "You want me to call them?" he asked. "There's one that patrols around here pretty regularly. He's probably close by now, if you'd like to go outside and talk to him instead of me."

He noticed the kid inching towards the door, as if he thought he could make a run for it. Bolt wasn't going to fight him, but he wasn't going to just let him walk out, either. For some reason, he felt oddly compelled to help this kid. But then, he felt oddly compelled to help everybody--it was sort of why he'd gone into medicine. And why he was stressing out so much about one of his patients in the Games--because there was no help for him to give there.

"What's your name?" he asked, to distract the kid from his escape.

He shook his head. "Sorry, I'm a bit limited on life choices and have been for awhile." Orsino had been the one that had been too good to steal - that, and he failed too often like this with being quiet and sneaking around. Besides, even if Seb had been kicked out, he was eighteen... They may still refuse to help him in the same way that there had been a danger that Orsino would be made to leave the day he turned eighteen.

"Sebastian." He offered the name easily enough, knowing the connection the man would probably make but... He could be any Sebastian. It was a common enough name, after all, he figured. His fingers still curled around the quiver of the bow. Patrolling peacekeeper or no, he would keep it. He knew how to run from them in ways that they could not catch him, especially in such a deserted part of town as this.

"I'd offer a last name, but I doubt that's a good idea." Right now, if he wanted to, he could offer his last name as Kava... his parents, for their worth, clearly did not want him. Orsino did. End of story there... But there was the small fact of who that would obviously make him... But Seb was not entirely sure he wanted to make that so obvious if he could help it. Not that he was ashamed of the connection so much as... well, he didn't quite like pity even on the best of days. This certainly was not the best of days.

Bolt knew there were a lot of kids--and families, even--in Ten that didn't have much choice in the way they lived their lives. He saw them every day in his practice, did the best he could for them, but so often, there was only so much he could do, for kids who had no money, no family. One such of the patients he had thought was hopeless was currently in the arena, and there, there was definitely nothing he could do to help. So he was not idealistic or naive enough to tell this kid he did have choices, not without knowing more first.

The name...the name caught him off guard for a moment. Most of Panem had been hearing about a certain Sebastian from Ten...and here was a Sebastian, standing in his basement in Ten. Stealing weapons. He frowned--coincidence? Or was this the kid their still-living tribute was apparently in love with? Was it even appropriate to ask?

No, probably not. Not given the circumstances. And it wasn't exactly relevant to the matter at hand.

"Well, Sebastian with no last name," he said. "I'd be interested to hear more about these, er...life choices you don't seem to have. But, if you haven't heard, there's a feast about to happen, and I've a particular interest in seeing what happens to our boy from Ten. So if you can promise to keep from putting an arrow in my eye," he said, arching an eyebrow. "You can bring the damn bow upstairs so I can turn the TV on and see what's happening. Think you can handle that?"

He wasn't sure exactly what made him want to keep the kid around--if he was going to let him hang onto the bow (which would be fun to explain to Twist and Cara later), he might as well just let him go. Perhaps it was because he'd have wanted someone else to watch out for his own kids, if either of them ever found themselves in such a troubled state, instead of dismissing them and letting them continue with such a pattern.

Or perhaps he just really wanted to watch the Games.

Sebastian only nodded and lowered the bow, leaving the arrows in the quiver. He nodded carefully at that. Admittedly, he did not like the idea of watching this next part of the Games with anyone - he would have preferred solitude... But with how last night had went, solitude while watching was unlikely. It was just one man, which was more privacy than he would get in the district square (where there were individuals who would know who he was... and he was not sure that he could bear that). A stranger... mostly... Something told Sebastian that this man was somehow important - that there was something he should remember about him. But what was it?

He wasn't sure what else to do than follow the man up to the main level and to what looked like a living room with a television. He slunk a bit away, moving as if being as far away from the screen would somehow help in his ability to be in solitude - to have his peace and quiet. He was afraid - very afraid of watching Orsino die. Not just because he was strong or because him living would mean a much easier time of life than the prospect he was at if Orsino died... But because, for all the frustration there was in hearing the boy confess any love for him, he returned it... Which was maybe part of the frustration anyway.

"Why the interest in him?" Sebastian asked, trying to sound almost unconcerned. "I mean, other than being from here?" He added quickly, knowing that there were others who were interested in him for a number of reasons. His cancer - his inability to stay clothed - his sexuality, even. He'd heard a number of them... and, honestly, did have a habit of liking to hear them, even if streaks of jealousy did go through him at times. Mostly when girls talked about how he looked, but that was besides the point.

Bolt eyed the boy curiously, but he lowered the bow quickly enough. He gave the kid an approving nod, and then turned to lead him out into the living room. "Don't mind the animals," he said over his shoulder. "They're friendly, for the most part."

The TV was still on when he reached the living room, from when he'd turned it on before. The commentators were still chatting, but judging by the quick flashes between the commentary and the actual shots of the tributes walking, it appeared they were all on their way to the feast. The girl and boy who were together--Three and Twelve--were moving pretty quickly, as though they feared something or were being pursued. It was getting close, then.

Bolt instinctively shrugged off his jacket from work and draped it over a chair, his eyes on the screen. He only glanced away when the kid spoke up, pondering briefly what he ought to reveal. There was that doctor-patient confidentiality thing. But then, how much did that matter when Orsino had revealed everything himself on national television? Surely it wouldn't make any difference that it was Bolt who had been the one to tell him all that.

"He was--is--a patient of mine," he said, turning back to the screen, but now they were rehashing Two's death by mushroom. "Not too much older than my son, either. You know him from school or anything?" he asked the boy, turning his attention back on his unconventional guest.

Sebastian watched carefully for Orsino - not wanting to be obvious of his concern... But this was difficult, at best. It was the line of being Orsino's doctor, though, that turned his attention, however momentarily, to the other man. This... yes, this had to be the familiarity. Orsino must have said the name - explained it to him while telling him about his cancer and... Briefly, he remembered the glimpse in passing of the man as he shuffled quickly out of the Justice Building with his head bowed and his hat pulled down to hide the tears that had been there that day.

For a moment... he wondered then... would he be safe to know? He'd know sooner or later, depending on Sebastian's... reactions. Depending on what happened... Depending on if... if... But Sebastian shoved that possibility out of his mind. "I've had to practically drag him into the hallway to wake him up sometimes." He admitted quickly. "If that gives you an idea of who I am."

That was easier than saying that he was Orsino's Sebastian. Much easier. Potentially more awkward, but easier... But, then again, saying that to anyone who did not know or find out was somehow going to be awkward, all things given.

Bolt winced as the commentators ripped into District Two and the Careers for their failure once again this year. It was getting to the point that he was pretty sure the Capitol was going to have to do something about the Victors that came out of the arena. After all, there were three kids from lower districts left, and one from Three, which was notoriously skipped over as a Career district. This kind of thing was probably not acceptable to the Capitol--despite how exciting it was for the people of Nine, Ten, and Twelve.

He pulled a quizzical face when the boy described pulling Orsino into the hallway to wake him up. For a second, he didn't put two and two together--and then the name, and the explanation clicked in his head, and he nearly did a double take, unsure where to look, at the screen or at the boy in front of him. This was apparently the Sebastian that their tribute had been talking to for most of the Games. The one he had confessed his love for, as unexpected as that had been for the folks back home.

Why the hell was this kid breaking into their house?!

"You're his...brother?" he asked, wanting to make sure he was clear on the subject. He was pretty certain they weren't brother by blood--hadn't Orsino said, all that time ago, that he lived with a foster family? But still, he had been talking to the kid for nearly the whole Games. Blood was relative at that point.

Sebastian was more or less watching the television, not wanting to meet the man's eyes. A mistake, then. Just as there seemed to be a mistake in naming certain districts as 'Career' districts, according to the commentators on television. None of them had been doing particularly well and, with their last victory seeming almost null and void due to the survival of all the Victor Tributes, they may start doing something to make Careers more likely to win...

"I'm his foster brother, yes." Now, he wondered if that was true. Had his parents yet gone off to file papers to disown him? Was that even how someone was disowned? Sebastian could not be sure and only vaguely knew the process of adoption and taking in foster children because of his respective siblings that never shared any blood with him.

"I think only a few people have made that connection, I'm afraid." He added, almost sheepishly as he shuffled away, as if trying to hide from what may come next. He didn't know this man, after all... And if he shared similar enough sentiment with his parents, Sebastian would have to break for it. After all, he was used to being pushed around some for being gay at times, though he never minded and could stand up for himself just fine then... But more people would likely hurt him for this... whatever it was with Orsino, if they figured the same of him that his parents had. More people that Sebastian could handle or wanted to handle, honestly.
