What was I thinking? Juneau wondered as she scrambled to get off the bus as quickly as possible. The three ten year old terrors she'd brought with her had broken free of her grasp and squirmed their way around everyone in front of them to bound off the bus before she could even stand up.

It was her day off. A day without studying, or homework or work. And she'd promised three of the young ones that she'd take them out. She hadn't expected them to make a beeline for the bus stop. She'd protested but they'd said they had a 'surprise' for her.

She should have known better. She shouldn't have gone with them all the way to Ten. She usually slept on the bus ride out there but that wasn't an option with Pika sitting next to her and Civet and Ocelot sitting in front of them. Civet and Ocelot had been peering back over the top of their seats the whole way....the WHOLE WAY...chattering non stop with Pika about school, whatever they saw outside the window...they'd played games and sometimes sang and tried to use the seats as drums. It had been fun but Juneau had kept out of it for the most part since she was still pretty drained from all the homework and work-work she'd been doing lately.

Maybe thats why she wasn't fast enough to latch onto Pika's arm when the bus came to a stop. The whole reason she'd insisted Pika sit next to her was she wanted to keep a close eye on the ringleader of trouble on this little trip. At some point Pika and Ocelot had braided her hair, with Civet giving helpful suggestions while leaning over the top of the seat so precariously Juneau had been sure the ten year old was going to tumble over onto her lap at any moment. The two braids flew behind her as she raced off the bus and after the giggling trio.

"Wait!" She shouted insistently. She picked up speed. All of the sextuplets were fast, and Pika was generally the fastest of them all, but Juneau was a champ at keeping up with them. She played soccer and it was her job to be fast running medicine out to the other districts. If they hadn't gotten a head start on her she'd have caught them a lot faster...as it was, she was almost within reach of Civet when she looked up and saw Pika almost run right into a Peacekeeper.

"Pika!" she snapped out sharply. Her sister didn't even look at her, just tugged on the man's shirt.

"Can you tell me where the animal shelter is?" Pika asked in her sweet I'm-a-perfect-angel voice.

Juneau grabbed the back of Civet's shirt and hauled her sibling close to her as she approached her other two siblings and the strange Peacekeeper.

"I'm sorry sir, we don't need to know that," she hurriedly interrupted. She knew exactly where the shelter was anyway, but there was no way she was taking her siblings there. "Pika, we aren't going to the animal shelter!"

"Where is it?" Pika asked again still looking up at the man.

Krieger had always secretly aspired to have a kid... well, adopt one, likely, as things were for him. Specifically he wanted to adopt a boy and have a son, Games be damned. He'd teach the kid to the fight and things would be all right. Of course, he'd never voiced this thought to Twist, considering how early on they were in their relationship, and it didn't specifically matter if Krieger had to adopt a child on his own.

Now, truth be told, the Peacekeeper didn't actually have any hands-on experience with kids. He'd seen them around town and his idle thoughts for starting a family were the result of having too much time alone to think, not because he'd actually ever interacted with a child. This was not to say Krieger had never seen a child - he certainly had around town on multiple occasions. But he'd never actually looked after a child his entire life and therefore when he wished he had a family, he wasn't quite sure what that

Now, standing on the corner and a bit lost into his thoughts, he was jolted back to earth by a child practically colliding with him. Glancing down, he realized there was an entire...gaggle? Pack? Flock? Group? How did one exactly count children anyhow?

And now he had two conflicting statements: a request for the location of the animal shelter and a statement that that wasn't necessary. He simply raised a brow at the group.

"So do you need to know where it is or not?"

What was Pika thinking?! That was a Peacekeeper! Juneau tried to hide how nervous this situation was making her, as well as how truly pissed off she was at the younger sibling that was beyond dead when they got home. Good intentions or not, Juneau was going to throw a fit that would get the lot of them grounded until they were no longer of Reaping age.

"Pika, leave the nice Peacekeeper alone. We are not going to the animal shelter, we're going home right now," she informed her sister. She looked at the Peacekeeper smiling a bit nervously. Peacekeepers in Six weren't THAT bad, but she'd gotten on the bad side of a couple of them playing music on the street with her siblings. And she knew they were more strict in the rural districts. She edged closer, still latched onto Civet and managed to grab hold of Ocelots arm as well. Pika, however, raced around to the other side of the Peacekeeper.

Showing no respect for boundaries or personal space, the ten year old latched onto the man's arm and peered entreatingly up at him.

"Where is it? It's for a surprise for our sister. She seems grumpy now but that's only because she's all stressed out from work and school and after her present she'll be in a better mood," Pika informed him cheerfully.

"We just got here Juneau we can't leave yet!" Ocelot whined.

"What about your present? We saved up and EVERYTHING!" Civet complained.

Juneau grit her teeth together and tried not to growl in frustration.

So Juneau was the oldest girl, looking like she was going to have an aneurysm, though he couldn't blame her. These children were everywhere. Pika had to be the one clinging to his arm now and he raised his brows even higher, adjusting his sunglasses which were, admittedly, not a standard part of the uniform, but he thought the visored helmets were silly anyhow.

"If you continue down this street for two blocks, take a right turn at the butcher's, and then keep going for another three blocks, that should get you there."

Children... no doubt they were frustrating, but Krieger was still charmed in the same way he found kittens cuter than he cared to admit. Speaking of animal shelters, he rather hoped to go pick up a dog himself at some point. Like children, he had no idea how to care for dogs either, but how hard could it be?

What? What, what, WHAT?! WHY had he just done that?! Juneau stared at the man in dumb founded horror as Pika's face lit up with unholy joy and a moment later her sister was running in the direction he'd indicated the animal shelter was.

Now Juneau had Civet and Ocelot to look after. If she ran after Pika, she'd lose one of them for sure. She knew her younger siblings, they were bundles of chaos wrapped in cute smiley child like form. She didn't need to lose all THREE of them. Her fear of what damage might come to Pika (or what damage the ten year old might do) overcame her wariness of the Peacekeeper. She might have even felt bad for the man, had he not gotten himself into this mess by picking the wrong side.

She hauled her two younger siblings before the District Ten Peacekeeper. "Watch them, I have to go get her,' Juneau said in her bossiest older sister voice. "You too leave this guys' side for a second I'm telling mom about what happened to the red velvet cake she bought special for your teacher last month."

A litany of protests rose but Juneau had already darted off down the street, running as fast as she could after Pika. Leaving the identical looking children staring up at the man with discontented expressions on their faces.

And so it was that Krieger found himself left with two children. He stared at them from behind his dark glasses, not sure what to do. Children were just...miniature adults, right? Of course, they eventually grew up, but what exactly did one do with a child? He tried to think of what he had been like as a kid: quiet, sickly for a good part of his childhood, and shy. These kids, he concluded, probably would not have gotten on with his younger self.

"Uh..." he began uncertainly. Peacekeeper training had prepared him to deal with riots and murderers and other disruptions of the peace, but children... why hadn't they explained how to deal with children? Lots of senior Peacekeepers eventually started families, but he was a special case. Maybe there was a manual on small children somewhere... what to feed them and stuff like that. If there were manuals on how to assemble complicated rifles and survive under harsh circumstances, there had to be something that wrote down how to feed and look after children.

OOC: In which Krieger illustrates he doesn't understand kids at all. :'D

"Pika!" Juneau shouted as she caught sight of her sister's ponytail before the girl ducked around a corner. Juneau picked up speed and almost ran right into an elder couple. Blurting out a hurried apology, she raced after her sister again.

Civet and Ocelot stared up at the man they'd been left with.

"We should go after them. We're supposed to be surprising Juneau."

"That's ruined now anyway stupid. Juneau's mad."

"I don't know why she got so upset." "Well she'll be even more upset if we leave like she told us not to."

The children seemed to remember at this point there was an adult. Ocelot looked up at the strange Peacekeeper curiously. "Could you take us to the animal shelter?"

"If you take us to the animal shelter Juneau probably won't get angry! We're just supposed to stay with you," Civet said thoughtfully, not even looking at the man as she spoke.

Krieger supposed the children had a point. The girl hadn't necessarily told him to stay there, but rather had asked...no, demanded that he watch the children. It wasn't as if he didn't have a job to do either. After a moment more of thought, he nodded slightly.

"Fine, but both of you have to promise to stick with me. Got it?" He gave them the most stern look he could muster, hoping he could frighten them into being good.

Ocelot and Civet grinned to each other and immediately started the way their sisters had gone.

"We're getting Juneau a surprise."

"It's a present since she's been too busy lately. And tired. We saved all our allowance."

"Except Pika spend some of hers last week on candy but that was okay since she shared it with the rest of us."

"We aren't sure what she'd want. It would have been better if we could have gotten here without her knowing but there is no way we could have gone all the way to Ten by ourselves. We'd be grounded forever."

"What kind of pet should we get her do you think?" The children both looked up at him expectantly.

Krieger occasionally glanced down to regard the children with amusement as they chattered between themselves and to him. He couldn't remember if - Juneau, wasn't it?- the girl had mentioned their names but they were certainly chattery to say the least.

"I don't know what kind of animals they'll have in the shelter," the Peacekeeper said after a moment of thought, "But are you sure you don't want to ask your sister what she wants to take care of?" All things considered, it looked like the elder girl already had her hands full looking after one kid.

Both kids frowned at him. "Dogs and cats." one of them immediately retorted somewhat indignantly. The other one chimed in at once, sounding excited, her words almost running over the first ones."They have other kinds of animals at the shelter maybe? Like what?"

Before he could answer the first one was already chattering once more. "No way you saw how she acted. We're gonna have to be sneaky about it. Pika is really good about being sneaky. I bet she'll get Juneau a pet before June can even catch up to her!" Civet declared enviously.

"What other kinds of animals do you think they have at the shelter?" Ocelot repeated eagerly.

With both children talking over each other, Krieger was honestly having a hard time telling the two apart. "Okay, wait, hang on there. I'll tell you about the other animals if you tell me what your names are."

So far, at least the children didn't seem to be causing too much trouble. They were noisy, yes, but they were being good for what it mattered. "Your sisters are Juneau and Pika. And...Juneau's the older one, right? So who are you two? I'm Krieger Gates, by the way..."

He figured telling them he was a Peacekeeper was quite irrelevant as they had to know what his uniform stood for. As for talking down to them... he simply couldn't. He was going to regard them as miniature adults for the time being.

"Civet and Ocelot," they both said at the same time. Neither seemed to notice what they'd done. Civet was watching the street with interest, obviously curious about the district in general and Ocelot was watching the Peacekeeper curiously.

"Juneau is the oldest. And we have three other siblings our age like Pika and then two older siblings but not as old as Juneau," Ocelot explained solemnly.

"Are there rabbits? Or llamas? I heard there were llamas in Ten! Or cows? Do cows count as pets here?" Civet asked, still looking around at the crowds.

So one was Civet and the other was Ocelot, though which was which remained a mystery. Krieger sighed and rolled his neck from side-to-side, listening to it pop. He'd find out sooner or later or not at all, he supposed - did it really matter? But going from what they'd said... he scrunched his nose, counting mentally.

Seven...Eight...

"Nine? There are nine of you altogether?" he said incredulously, ignoring Civet's question for the time being. He'd imagined himself with one son and calling that his family, but he was astounded to discover that there was a family out there with this many kids. And he'd thought four was a lot... he didn't know the half of it.

Civet giggled and Ocelot snickered, looking at each other like they were used to this response from people whenever they told them how many siblings they had.

"We have a theory that mom and dad were aiming for four. And then well...six of us happened all at once you see," Civet explained cheerfully. Almost proudly, as though having so many siblings was some sort of accomplishment.

"Are we almost there yet?" Ocelot asked with a sigh after a moment, clearly not as enamored with watching the surroundings as Civet was.
