• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

In the Tenth District Square, a large cardboard box has been placed. In it is several blankets, several bowls filled with dog food, several bowls filled with water, and an assortment of thirteen puppies. On the side, a clearly written message in marker simply says: FREE PUPPIES.

Take one, won't you?

[[ BASICALLY, the idea is to have as many different people take a puppy as possible. ^^ So please only take one per player (if you want to take two for an IC reason, come talk to me). Feel free to determine what they look like and what have you, just keep in mind that they are mostly mixed, so any purebred puppies are unlikely. I'll try to keep this updated with how many puppies are left, but just please also read through the thread as you're posting to make sure there are some still around. As for district residents, yes, anyone can post here to take a puppy, just please keep in mind if they could feasibly take care of it/afford food for it and the like.

Puppy 1
Puppy 2
Puppy 3
Puppy 4
Puppy 5
Puppy 6
Puppy 7
Puppy 8

Puppy 9
Puppy 10
Puppy 11
Puppy 12
Puppy 13

UPDATE: Due to how long it is taking to finish this thread, players may take a second puppy with a different character of theirs if they so wish.

HAVE FUN WITH THIS, GUYS. ]]

Hazel sighed as she walked through district ten with her mother. She wanted to be at home with the guitar that Christian had gotten her working on a new song, not here, npt running errands with her mother. Why her mother had insisted on going to ten to get meat she'd never know. Her mother was just like that sometimes though. Difficult and strange.

It hadn't been a bad trip so far though. She'd gotten to spend time with her mother and she'd told her about some of the songs that she was working on and got a title for one of the songs that she'd just written that she didn't know the title to. That one was about telling Christian she loved him for the first time. She loved that song and she couldn't wait to sing it to Christian and it now had a title.

"Hazel, where is your mind right now?" Her mother stopped in the middle of the district square. Why she stopped there she had no idea. She just had. But there wasn't anything she could do about that. Not that it really mattered.

"It's on songs." Not exactly rocket science and it was certainly a reply that her mother was probably expecting. After all her mind was always on one of three things, Christian, music, or training.

Her mother sighed, "Well, then I suppose you don't care if we pass by a box of free puppys?"

Hazel blinked, "What? Free puppies? Can I have one?"

Her mother just laughed nodding her head. "You have to pick it out though."

Hazel skipped over to the box happily. She'd been wanting a dog for awhile but her mom had always told her no, and now her mom was saying yes. This was great. This was absolutely great. She kind of wished she could take one for Christian too but she couldn't ask him if he wanted one or not and she had a feeling her mom wouldn't be okay with two if he didn't want a dog. Not that she thought there was a chance that he wouldn't but she just wanted to know for sure that he did before she actually got him a dog.

She peeked into the box and fell in love with a small white dog. She picked him up. "Hi, I think I'm going to call you Barkley."

She scratched his ears as she stood back up.

As she walked back over to her mom she whispered to Barkley, "I can't wait to introduce you to Christian."

Before she made it over to her mom she was turning around again. She couldn’t just leave the rest in there. Maybe she couldn’t take all of them but she could take two. She could take a friend for Barkley and a companion for Christian. Christian would surely love the puppy. She’d get a girl for him though.

She knelt down beside the box. “Well, Barkley, who’s your friend?”

Barkley jumped out of her arms and ran over to one of the smaller females. Hazel laughed picking up the two squirmy puppies.

Morgana loped beside Oberon as he walked through District 10, on his way back home to twelve. He despised having to go to the rural peacekeeper headquarters, preferring to make the trip to District 2, as his home District was - in his opinion - more "professional." In his mind, everything about the rural districts screamed unprofessional, as well of poor and boring. He hated where he had been assigned.

His brooding was so intense that he hardly noticed Morgana lope off to investigate a cardboard box in the square. The dog's low growl, however, broke him out of his reverie and alerted him to the presence of said box. He strode over to the box, noticing the words "FREE PUPPIES" written on the side. Probably just scrawny mutts, he thought, peering in.

He was half right. There were in fact a few mutts, but none were scrawny, and one of the pups looked to be a purebred shepherd. That was the one that had caused Morgana's growl, and the one who was currently growling right back at the much larger dog. He picked up the pup by the scruff of its neck and held it up to eye level. It looked healthy, and it sure acted healthy, he noted, as it yipped at him. Oberon nodded approvingly at the pup, "I'll train you to take Morgana's place in a few years...Balor.

Holding the pup with one hand, he started back to district twelve, Morgana loping at his heels.

Balor, puppy of death

His hunting skills had to be leaving him. They just had to be. From all those hours spent in the Gym while his wife was mentoring rather than the woods. And from barely entering the woods when she was around due to not wanting the Capital to punish them both by making him an avox and forcing him to serve her.

But surely, something so natural like hunting would come to him if the time came that he needed to use it. If he was reaped. If he had to work alongside Tomsy and his wife so that he could return home.

Today Gideon was in Ten, restocking their supply of meat so that he had something to cook the perfect welcome home dinner with for his wonderful wife. And thats when he saw it. A box in the square. He approached it, looking for whoever it could belong to but saw no one. He bent down, checking the sign on the box first before taking one of the puppy's and heading to the nearest Butcher. This puppy sure would make a good welcome home gift for his wife!

This was one of the rare days where he could keep solidly to District Ten with deliveries... Not that he minded, really. It allowed Meadow to follow him around and, he had to admit, he was growing rather attached to the little fox. The kitten and the bunny? They remained at home. Coffee usually remained in a cage in his makeshift room, though he often took her out to play. Sino, though, was left to her own devices like many of the other pets in the house. Meadow was similar.

It was getting easier to be there as he got used to the people more. It felt less and less like a stranger's house and, while not his home, more like a friend's house... Which was better than where he had been mentally ages before.

Today he had just wrapped up a delivery when he stopped by in the Square, hoping to find a place to get something to eat and then... he stopped as he caught sight of it. Puppies? Lots of puppies? He remembered, briefly, the box of bunnies in Three. He supposed he should not have more pets - but then again, he was getting used to the house. They had plenty of dog food there - and Twist was rather welcoming of the Coffee and Sino, respectively, when he had brought them home too.

So... well, a puppy could not hurt. He glanced at the bowls of food and water, seeing that they were all somewhat filled, not really to be filled even more. So, glancing around, he looked at them. There were a lot of different varieties, but the one that caught his attention seemed to be a little apart from the rest, almost shivering, as if scared. It reminded him of someone he knew. It was small, black, tan, and rather fluffy looking.

He moved to take it, lifting the little one to his chest. It was a boy, he thought, upon checking before shuffling away. A very cute little boy, that is. "Arrow, then." It was a good name, he thought, as the puppy sniffed carefully at his hands, arms, and chest. He was shivering a little, head down, as if hiding. That was fine. Sebastian could work with that. Sebastian could definitely work with that as he moved away to find some place to get some food.

Tia had left right after school had ended and had walked ever since. Except for sleeping for some time in the bushes somewhere. But finally she reached dictrict 10, maybe this was far enought away from district two? Bitiing on her lips before she looked around.

Walking around on the district square she spotted a box, and a note that said free puppys! Oh Tia wanted a puppy! Something that could love her! She set her eyes on one small little puppy and walked over too it and picked it up. "hey there little one, I'm going too look after you," Tia said holding the small puppy in her hands. "I think ill name you Liria" Tia said hugging the puppy

Cara slipped out of the crowd silently, her dark eyes trained on the box. She paused before she'd taken more than a few steps and looked around quickly, making sure the familiar face she'd seen earlier was no longer nearby. She'd been on her way home from the shelter when she'd caught sight of Sebastian. She was good at recognizing people from afar, and had followed him. She'd been doing that a lot, usually around the house.

The whole circumstances around Sebastian's existence in her family's household made her a little confused, nervous and apprehensive in general. The boy had been stealing from them and then...and then Orsino had died. And now...

She just wanted to keep an eye on him was all. Until she was sure. Sure everything was alright.

He'd stopped by the box and taken a puppy and left. And she'd been torn between following him and remaining behind. Now she was here, and he was long gone, so the choice was made. A few people had come to pick up dogs. The urge to simply take the entire box full was strong, but she didn't know how she'd get them all home. Cara wondered what had possessed someone to leave so many puppies. Where had they all come from? Maybe the shelter? Maybe someone who didn't want to see them die?

The problem was, this was Ten. And people here were hungry. It was altogether possible some of the people picking up these animals were doing so out of hunger rather than compassion. Cara could hardly blame them but....

She reached the box and knelt down next to it. She wanted to take them all. And she COULDN'T take them all. Sighing, she picked up the first puppy that approached her to sniff her hand. Swiftly lifting the pup into her arms, she rose again, her heart aching at the whines from the other pups within the box. "I'll be back," she promised softly, then hurried back through the crowd. She'd just go home...and then come back again until she'd taken as many as she could. She wasn't entirely sure how she was going to explain that to her father and Uncle Twist but...but she couldn't just LEAVE them there!

'gonna love you lonesome

Channing was on her way home from District Ten. She had spent the day with Krieger Gates and was ready to get home after a long day of talking and walking around and getting familiar with the lower districts. She waved her goodbye to him and was on her way home. It was a quiet night in District Ten, but she wouldn't know if it was every busy in the District Square or not due to the fact she wasn't apart of the District. She walked slowly and looked around, examining things as she walked. She saw people crowding a box and wondered what they could be doing and so she went over to examine, not that she was in uniform and could do anything, but still she was curious to see what they were up too.

She walked a little ways to the box and saw puppies inside. A sign read 'free puppies' and she smiled. A plan was evolving in her head. She knew she hadn't kicked started things with her sister on the right foot. To be honest she wasn't happy she had a sister at all, but she had one and she wanted to get to know her real family better along with her twin sister and that was the truth. She knew her sister had mentioned always wanting a dog, but never took the time to get one and that was when a light went off in her head and she reached down scooping up two puppies. Matching puppies! They were identical just like Thorne and Channing.

"You're coming home with me!" she whispered to them and didn't bother talking to anyone else that was still around. Instead she started walking home, faster and more eager than before.

C'mon, Virgo. Mix it up. All you do everyday is go to school, go to training, then come home. Do something different or you'll never know what life has to offer! What will you do when you get past Reaping age?

His mother's words racked around in his head. Mix it up? He'd been going with the same routine for years. Virgo had a plan for after Reaping age; become a doctor. It was generic, but that job would do just fine, so why did his parents always question his motives?

Locking the bolt on his suitcase, he gave his mom a peck on the cheek and a hug before leaving his house. The train would be waiting on him at the station. He didn't know where he was going--his mom planned the trip--but he was hoping somewhere nice. A vacation! Not much got nicer than One, but maybe he was going to the beaches in Four or the factories in Three. Possibly the museums in Two.

Wherever it was, he would be staying for a week.

The ride wasn't too long, but as he stepped from the train he saw the sign: WELCOME TO DISTRICT TEN. "District Ten?" he wondered curiously. He was almost mad that this was where he was sent. What was there in Ten? Nothing.

Virgo walked into the District Square, trying to find his hotel. It was prodigious and just around the corner from the Square. The decor was lovely and the attendant was very sweet. He couldn't help but compliment her shoes, they were obviously from the Capitol and it must've taken a lot to get them.

The room was fabulous--he was shocked to know District Ten had such accommodations--complete with a large television, a gigantic bed, low-lighting, and a bar. Virgo plopped his baggage ontop of the bed and unlocked it, revealing several outfits of choice.

He'd just worn shorts and a tee shirt on the train. After putting on his blue jeans and a polo, he noticed something under his shirt in the suitcase.

Enjoy the little things!

Mom xoxo

"So that's why I'm in Ten," Virgo speculated outloud. He shook his head and traveled down to the Square. Then he saw them- the puppies. He had a special love for small animals, especially dogs. Large steps took him over to the pen, and his eyes traveled to the sign: FREE PUPPIES.

Virgo's jaw dropped and he looked the five that were left. They were all so cute, the decision would be hard. An extra small puppy caught his eye; it was white and the size of his fist. He picked her up and love punched him in the face.

"I'll call you Adele," Virgo said with a smile.

Nolan was out training for the day. He decided to run in the rural districts to get a breather from his life and family. He needed to think and he couldn't do that when he was being distracted by his parents, brothers and sister. He wanted to build a relationship with his sister despite how everyone else might have felt. He needed some breathing room to think his thought process through on how he would build a relationship, but still remain close to the rest of his family. Nolan needed space to just be himself and focus on training as well.

He was running through the district square when he stumbled upon a box that said free puppies. He had always wanted a puppy, but he never asked his parents. He was sure they didn't mind and if they did mind he would hide it. Would he not? He picked up a puppy from the box and didn't pause to see anyone else do the same or anything like that. He started running again, new puppy in tote.

Matka had found himself on the bus to Three. He thought, quite frankly, that going there might be interesting. There might be celebrations to see, and, well, the thought of free-running through some of that was more than a little tempting. However, after a long day at school and the previous night going into rather late hours working at one of the factories... Well, it was no wonder that he drifted slowly, but surely to sleep.

He awoke when the bus was pulling into the District Ten Square and got out. He figured... well, he could stop and maybe find something cheap to eat... Then catch the next bus home - hopefully not falling asleep on the bus for the second time. He stopped and saw... a box for puppies. Free puppies. He approached it, carefully leaning over it to access that there were two small ones left. He thought about his tiny, one-room apartment. By the standards of District Eight, it was large... if only because he was the only one living there.

He could get food for the little dog, he was sure. He was more than sure. He had the tessarae he claimed. He had enough money to support himself and a dog... and, well, they were cute. He did not like the idea of leaving one behind, but instead did his best to provide for the one remaining. He refilled the food bowls and managed to grab up the water bowl and fill it from a nearby bakery before placing it back into the box.

He grabbed up a small puppy - a girl, he thought. She was cute - precious, even. "Ruby. I think Mom would have liked that for you." He commented, greeted by a lick to the face as he grinned and carried the little one off.

Krieger was out on patrol, as per usual, when he spotted the box in the middle of the square. Grumbling to himself, he strode over, assuming someone had decided to litter (the nerve of it!) when he realized it was a litter, in a totally different sense of the word - or rather, it had been at one point. All that remained in the box was one forlorn puppy.

Ordinarily, Krieger would have simply picked up the animal and given it up to one of Ten's many shelters, but today was different. Having been around Twist's home so often had instilled a certain affection towards animals in the man. Reaching down with one large hand, he picked up the tiny puppy, staring at it contemplatively before nodding - yes, he would adopt this tiny puppy.

"I'll call you Ripper. That's a good name for a boy, isn't it? You'll be the most intimidating dog in all of Ten when you're full grown, I'm sure."

Of course, Krieger didn't know it at the time but the dog was:
1) Not actually a boy
2) Not ever going to get much bigger than that

...but at the moment, he was happy and as they say, ignorance is bliss. Puppy in his arms, he decided to leave work early to take care of his new puppy and, of course, show 'him' to Twist.
