• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

She didn't say a word, and Bolt didn't push her, though that worried him. He knew Cara had a tendency to get lost in her thoughts, to be full of feelings & ideas she didn't share that sometimes took hold of her...like the need to kill that alligator.

Maybe, like the need to have saved those people. But that was less possible than finding that alligator had been.

"You need anything, Car?" he asked hesitantly. "I'm just going to run to the med station and grab something for that burn. Are you hungry? Thirsty?"

"If I could have something to drink please," she said in a voice that sounded very far away to her own ears. She was hungry too, but mostly, now that she was sitting there, very thirsty. There hadn't been enough to eat or drink. Especially after someone had stolen some of the meager supplies.

She hugged the pillow to her and continued to stare blankly at the wall. Her father would leave and then maybe she'd be able to think passed that buzzing sound filling her ears.

Did she want to think? At all? What was there to think about? Lowering her face into the pillow, she squeezed her eyes shut and barely held back a whimper.

She didn't want to think.

Bolt nodded, a bit worried at how fragile she sounded--but then, how else was she supposed to sound? She'd just been through hell, again, and he was asking her what she wanted to eat. He let the tent flap fall closed and hurried out to grab some supplies.

Luckily, the camp was small--they had not brought an enormous and ineffective search party, but a rather small and determined one, people who were missing loved ones and eager to help, who moved quickly and carried loads more equipment than they should have been able to, in hopes of having provisions for the people they wanted to find. So he didn't have to go far, but he did have to answer a million questions on the way there; he tried to shrug them off, telling them he didn't have time, that he'd talk when Cara was asleep. They seemed to understand, the other searchers, but he could feel their resentful stares on him as he hurried back to his daughter.

"Here, Car," he said as he came back to the tent, kneeling down and holding out a bottle of water for her--precious stuff, out here in the swamp, reserved only for the most important circumstances. He sat next to her and pulled a clean rag from his pile of supplies, wetting it with his own bottle of water. "Hold out your arm," he told her. "Let's get that taken care of first."

As he dabbed gently at her burn, trying to get it clean before he bound it, he tried to sort out the easiest of the questions that were still flooding him. Finally, he asked, "Hey Car...what were you doing on that bus trip, anyway? Did you tell Mom or Uncle Twist about it? Because I didn't know you were even going anywhere, until you were already gone."

Cara smashed her face into the pillow. It was comforting and soft and cool. When her father returned she raised her face, stared at him and then obediently shoved the pillow away and took the bottle of water instead. She sipped on it slowly, careful not to chug it and just make herself sick.

She looked up in surprise at her father's question though. Still feeling dull and sluggish, it seemed like the strangest question to hear.

It felt like she'd been gone forever, she thought.

"They had a list of people who were supposed to go. I was on the list," she said quietly. He thought she'd... "I didn't...volunteer or anything."

She watched him fix up her arm. She could barely feel the pain. Barely feel anything really. Except guilt.

Bolt nodded as she explained, though he was still a bit confused. Maybe they had told Zen, he thought, instead of notifying him, assuming her mother took care of that sort of thing...and maybe Zen had thought it was some sort of field trip, hadn't thought to protest their teenage daughter going on some kind of labor trip into the middle of a dangerous swamp.

The idea started to make him angry, even without knowing if it was true.

He finished cleaning her arm and smeared a salve over the burn, then began wrapping it up in a bandage. "Was there anyone else there you knew?" he asked. "Was it all adults? Or kids? How many Peacekeepers were there?" he went on, forgetting he was asking quite a lot of questions.

"There were kids. Other kids. Some. And a Peacekeeper. Most of them were dead. The bus when it crashed..." she trailed off, staring at her father but not really see him. She lifted the hand holding the water bottle. Rolled it in the air to demonstrate. "It rolled and I was unconscious. And then everyone was dead. Or a lot of them...were dead..."

She tried to remember before the crash. "There were both though. Kids and adults and...and some Peacekeepers."

She felt funny.

"I didn't know anyone that survived but there was a girl from my class on the bus before...and I think a Peacekeeper from one of the other districts I'd seen around the market area," she shook her head, feeling dazed. "But they died."

Blood. All over the seats. "The person I was sitting next to died. And the people in front of me."

She was rambling and she knew it wasn't helping so she stopped and blinked, tried to focus. Looked at her arm and tried to concentrate on watching her father work instead.

It took everything Bolt had to keep steadily wrapping his daughter's arm.

Dead. She must have said the word twenty times. He wanted to scream--he got it. They were all dead, there was blood, everyone she knew was dead, the people around her were dead--and she had seen it all. She'd been in the bus when it rolled. She'd watched them die. She'd lived through it, miraculously it seemed, and yet, she had seen it all.

It made him sick just to think about it.

She was only sixteen--she didn't need to be seeing those things. But then, anyone could argue that younger children than Cara saw it all on television, every Games. Still, the thought of Cara surrounded by so much trauma and death...he didn't like it. It was as if all the work he'd done to shelter her from those things was for naught--she might not have gone to the Games (yet), but she'd still watched people die before her eyes.

"There," he said finally as he tied off her bandage. "All set, Car. You let me know if it hurts, okay. And...you don't think about them," he added, catching her eye. "It wasn't your fault. You couldn't have done anything. You think about...about going home and seeing Xavier and Uncle Twist and Sebastian and your mom...and not about any of those people. Okay?"

Cara didn't respond. She looked dropped her arm, picked up the pillow, and scooted back so she was almost leaning on the wall. No. No she couldn't think of anything else. She tried but she couldn't. Just like she couldn't sleep. She hugged the pillow to her.

Maybe it would be better in the morning.

She didn't say anything, and Bolt didn't press her any further. She had had an ordeal, he knew, and there was more still to go...if they found the others...if they were sick...

He didn't want to think about it right now. He wanted to sleep, to wake up and find his daughter better, to take her home and never let her out of his sight again. He waited a moment, watching her to be sure she wouldn't say anything, and then moved away quietly to set up his own sleeping bag.

Let her sleep. In the morning, things would right themselves. At least, he had to hope so.
