• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Michael sighed as he nudged the door behind him. It closed softly, the lock just barely clicking into place, but the sound still seemed to echo in the huge hallway as he stumbled forward. Not from drink. No, Tomsy hadn't touched a drop of liquor since he'd gotten home. Despite desperately wanting to. Despite Tristan. Despite losing both his tributes. Again. Again and again and again. He failed. It hurt more this time. The buried pain was sharper and bit in deeper. He felt bitter and hollow, the reflexive smiles and familiar lies stinging, burning with the feel of acid tingling against his nerves at every reminder.

His fedora tumbled down, exposing the long tangled strands of golden brown hair he rarely bothered to brush with more than his fingers. With a grumble and a grunt he swooped down and picked the black and gray striped hat up and tugged it back on again.

He hadn't gone anywhere. He had simply taken Runner out for a walk, wandered the edges of his district. The calico colored collie mix wandered in front of him, sniffing the ground and moving forward with tail wagging enthusiasm. She seemed to have accepted that while something was wrong with Michael, there was nothing she could do about it. He'd been so restless after returning from the capitol, with failure weighing heavily on him like a cloak he couldn't shake off. He'd wandered during the day and hid in his rooms at night, playing tributes to the children from Games passed. He slept, as usual, in odd little cat naps when his eyes refused to stay open any longer. Sometimes on a chair or a couch. Sometimes on a bench in the district square or in a field outside.

He'd slept some time in such a field today, and his wrinkled jeans had grass stains on them, his jacket had grass and petals clinging to the back of it.

He hummed to himself, the sound easily his soul just enough to keep his feet moving. He didn't want to stand still. He didn't want to run into Antoinette and imagine how much worse it would be when the Capitol called her name. Or Tristan, and see the accusation and hatred in his icy gaze. Well deserved hatred. Michael had killed the boy's parents practically. Then disappointed him by failing to ensure the victory of...

No. No he knew better than that. He knew...he knew there was nothing he could do. Hadn't he said as much to the boy when he'd left? And to mourn Mina more than Indigo was wrong. He had done his best by both of them. He didn't know where he was going, just wandered the halls of his manor. Runner bounded ahead, and he followed her listlessly. His humming was very soft, barely discernible unless one was standing right next to him. Though, he realized Runner could hear him still, even if he'd been softer still.

The sun was setting and the light trickling through the windows was more brilliant for it when Runner paused and looked down a side hallway. Her soft fluffy floppy ears perked up and she made a soft 'whuff' before wagging her tail more vigorously and trotting purposefully down the hall. Michael paused, leaning against an old side table his grandmother had probably purchased, uncertain whether he should follow. Runner might have caught Antoinette or Tristan's scent. He didn't want to encounter them. Not right now.

But as she disappeared into a door that was slightly ajar he mumbled to himself about cowardice and trailed down the hallway. It was just as likely she'd heard a rat or a bird trapped inside through a window left open.

All of a sudden a dog came into the room, Mollys face light up and she imideatly went over too it and petted his head, the others was still hiding in the shadows and at other places. "Where did you come from?" She asked the dog whispering, she heard some foot steps comming closer too. She sat down next too the dog, slightly behind it looking at the door. "is that your owner? or is it the nice lady?" she asked the dog. It didnt sound like the nice lady that had brough them all there.

She felt kind of scared, she wanted too run and hide but the dog would probably follow her if she tried to do so. So she stayed foot. It was slightly interesting too, knowing that she'd soon meet a real victor of the games! Molly bit her lips and picked up her old teddybear. "is he scary?" she asked whispering too the dog. SHe didn't get why the others wouldn't come forwards, it could change theire lifes right? maybe he was a kind man who let them all stay there? The nice lady had said that they were going too live there!

She pushed her self up from the floor, and looked towards the door. "helloo?" it felt like she had been sitting at the floor for ages, when she had just been down at the floor for a minute or two. She looked at the door before she let her hand bring her teddy closer too her. Her stomach was slightly starting to groumble, it had been some hours since the lady had been there. "Hello? Are you scary?"

Michael froze just outside the door, his hand pausing just before the surface. His eyes widened in surprise, and for a moment, he tried to pretend he hadn't heard the whisper of an unfamiliar voice within.

And then it spoke again. Louder. His hand jerked back to his side and Michael stumbled back. His brows furrowed together and he looked down the hall, the way he'd come. He took another step back, uncertain and unsure why he was so upset when he didn't even know who or what was behind the door.

"Runner!" he called out, commanding the dog to return to him. Had a family sneaked into his home? The voice had sounded young. Who else was in there?

He tried to ignore the words, the meaning behind them. He didn't know what to do. He'd been wandering to avoid anyone. What was someone doing here? Maybe...maybe it was some kind of symptom of not drinking. Or repressing trauma or something like that. He'd seen Jewel before, and she was dead. Heard her voice. Pretended until he couldn't tell the difference between reality and wishes and dreams.

The dog came to the door but pushed it open to get through, and sat in the doorway, looking back. Michael found himself staring at a little girl. Not Jewel. Not Jewel at all. And why would he be imagining a stranger in his home?

"Who are you?" he asked, surprised with how suspicious he sounded. Usually he was much more jovial, his mask never slipping. Today was a bad day was all. He'd do better in a moment. Once he figured out what was going on.

"Who are you?" he asked, after the dog had returned too him, leaving Molly alone at the floor. Biting on her lips she looked at him with big eyes. He didn't seem scary, but he seemed kind of confused. Hadn't the nice lady talked too him about it? "I'm Molly" Molly said pushing herself up from the floor. Still keeping her eyes on the victor. "the nice lady brought me here, she said it was safe and that she would let me live here" Molly said rather nervoulsy. Maybe it wasn't okay by him.

The little girl looked over at him again before she bit her lips. "I didn't mean too scare you, and i havent made a mess" Molly said shaking her head, she hadn't done anything wrong yet. except for staying there without him knowing. She bit on her lips and lifted her teddy up from the floor too, her eyes traveld fom the man too the dog instead. So its name was Runner? The dog had seemed to react when the man had called for it, by calling him Runner. Maybe the dog was a quick runner? maybe that was why he had gotten that name? She wondered.

She chewed on her lips before she looked down at the ground. "i'm sorry" she whipsered nervously. Maybe she had made a mistake by following the nice lady there. She took her hand through her hair before she looked up at the victor again. She could feel her heart beating faster and faster, what would she do if she was kicked out by him? Would she get too see the other kids who was still hiding? or would she never see them again. "I didn't mean too, im sorry!"

What the hell was the matter with him, scaring some little kid? She looked like she was going to cry or something. The fear in her voice shook him, helped him slip back into the familiar state of mind he usually used to keep himself from being...himself. Whoever that was.

"Hey, no, you uh...didn't do anything," probably. For all he knew maybe she had torn the room apart. But what did he care? One room amongst so many. He was reeling a little, however, as the implications hit him.

"Wait...nice lady? You mean Antoinette?" his niece hardly seemed old enough to be referred to as lady, but this girl was younger even still than Antoinette. There was no one else living there, however, who he could imagine letting the little girl in. And under what circumstances? "Er...it's alright though. Don't worry I'm not mad or anything," Just confused as all hell. He fished a cigarette out of his jacket and lit it a moment later. He needed one to clear his mind from the disquiet and confusion suddenly overwhelming him.

Molly looked at the man and bit her lips. "Wait...nice lady? You mean Antoinette?" he asked, Molly shaked her head slightly. The lady wasn't named Antoniette, it had been something else. "whos Antoinette?" Molly asked slightly confused. "the nice lady's name was Nathalie, she used too work at the school, but now she helps at the orphanage" Molly explained maybe he knew Nathalie? Maybe that was why she had said that it was fine for him.

Molly looked at him again. "She talked a lot about you, she said you were a victor, not in like your name was Victor but that you were a victor" Molly said slightly confused, Nathalie had explained too her that it was a victors house but had left out the part of the victors name, maybe she thought that everyone knew his name since he was the only victor district twelve had. But Molly didn't remember his name. "Your name is not Victor is it?" she asked holding her teddybear tightly in her hands, before she stepped closer too him, kind of hoping the others would follow her but they didn't. So she stepped outside of the room looking up at him.

"I like too meet Antoniette, she has a really pretty name!" the eightyear old said with a smile. And someone with a really pretty name was often really pretty too! "She's probably really pretty too" Molly added mostly too herself, kind of confirming her own thoughts.

She could feel her throat getting a bit dry and her stomach was a little bit hungry, but she ignored that she wanted too know more about the victor. Like what his name was how old he was, or who was Antoniette

Natalie. The housekeeper. Michael paid her to clean the house because he had more money than he really had a use for and he liked to be able to help other district residents when he could. One of the women who sold wildflowers has cornered him and demanded he let the young woman do so, because she'd been fired from her previous job and desperately needed the money.

Now he was going to have to ask her why she was letting children randomly live in his home. Wasn't that going to be a fun conversation. And without alcohol either.

At least this was distracting, he thought wryly.

"Uh, right. Natalie," he said, scratching the back of his head and looking around. The girl didn't know his name? "I'm Michael," he wasn't feeling terribly eloquent, and it took him a bit to continue from there. Meanwhile, Runner was approaching the girl again, wagging her tail in a friendly manner.

Which reminded him. This was a guest then right? Sort of? Apparently she'd been living there. But for how long? Had she been there when he got back? Before that? Did Antoinette and Tristan know about this? But the girl didn't know about them...

"Antoinette is my niece. She and her brother Tristan live here as well," as well. Right. Because apparently this little girl lived here too. Was Natalie living her? He was definitely going to have a talk with that woman. Sooner, rather than later. "Uh,' he looked around, as though trying to figure out where he was, when he was really just trying to think of what to do next. "Why don't we go down to the kitchen,' he was feeling sort of light headed. "I'm kind of hungry. I'll make you a sandwich or something."

Kids liked sandwiches right? If not, that was too bad, because his cooking skills were not in any way up to par to any picky eaters.

Molly looked at Michael and smiled brightly as he asked her if she wanted a sandwish. She nodded with a smile. "yes please!" She said with a bright smile on her face. She held her hand out too Michael to take. She smiled at him, a bit suprised. "you know how to make a sandwish?" She asked suprised looking at him. She had thought that only her daddy had known how too cook, and he only had too cook cause her mummy had died, but now they both were dead. She looked down at the floor thinking about it made her upsett, made her feel sad. But hey they were in heaven looking after her!

"did you have fun in the capitol? Did you make any new friends?" She asked him with a wondering smile on her face. Molly liked Michael, he was nice and she'd love too meet Antoninette too. "Is there anyone else who lives here?" She asked him, maybe he had kids? maybe Antoninette had siblings? How old was she? Maybe the girl would want too play with her and her teddybear? Maybe the girl knew how too braid her hair? Her dad didn't, the lady at the orphanage didn't have the time too, so most of the time her hair was either down or gathered in one ponytale.

Molly wanted too look pretty like the ones she had seen on the screens, did the people walk like that in real life in the capitol or was they just wearing it when they were on the screen? "Do they dress like they do on the big screens? With theire hair in pretty colors? With pretty clothes?" she asked in a wondering voice.
