They only had one living tribute now. Antoinette watched how their male tribute, Indigo died, feeling sligthly disappointed. Now the burden of victory was on Aamina's shoulders. Everyone at the District square was looking at the huge screen with sad eyes. Some people were even crying, and Antoinette could only guess that they were somehow related to the boy.

Antoinette walked closer the screen, next to some ladies who were talking about Aamina and Indigo. One of them said that Aamina would die soon, and the others agreed with her. Antoinette rolled her eyes and looked back at the screen. Their female tribute was actually one of the favourite ones from the beginning. She had reached the final six now and she had a great chance of victory. Still, Antoinette didn't think that joining district three's tributes was a good idea. There was a handful of tributes left and they could easily gang up on her.

Someone tossed that there would be a feast soon. Many others agreed. Antoinette was not sure. Maybe there would be a feast, maybe not.

Turning her head to a boy next to her, Antoinette murmured. " I hope that there won't be a "come or die" rule this year."

Normally, Bastian didn’t have much time to watch the Games, at least not in any of the years before, but now he spent most of his time glued to the screen. His coworkers at the mines didn’t mind, they took some of his shifts or allowed him to leave early, and why wouldn’t they? His baby sister was in the Games and every day she seemed to do better and better, every day that passed and she was alive, Bastian seemed more and more interested in the Games. Everyone knew though, Bastian was one step away from losing it all, the perfectly crafted mask of patience and confidence on Mina threatened to break with every tribute that crossed her path.

That day he had left work early, once again, and his eyes remained glued to the screen. He was glad that Indigo had died, he was even somewhat sad that he had not gotten completely destroyed by something better than a mutt. The little asshole had dared attacked Mina, and made her feel bad, he could tell in her face during their interactions, he deserved way worst than a mutt, he deserved five or ten of those.

And as he watched the screen he tried to ignore the little faith that people seem to have in his sister, because he didn’t want to get into an argument with people who clearly had absolutely no idea how things worked. And either way he couldn’t waste his energy worrying about them, because he barely slept as he was always watching the Games, making sure Mina was fine. He had been trying to save money, to send her something for her leg, or some extra food, but sponsoring someone was expensive and he was still short in cash.

”I hope that there won't be a "come or die" rule this year." a girl said, he turned and saw that she was speaking to him, about the Feast who someone else had brought up. Her face seemed familiar, but he wasn’t sure where he knew her from, and judging by her clothes she couldn’t be the daughter or sister of any of the miners he worked with. So, where had he seen this tall and sleek siren?

”Me either. I’m not sure how Mina would do if they force her to face some of the bigger tributes…” he replied nonchalantly as he looked back into the screen hoping they would show something more, something about her sister instead of the dead body of Indigo, who deserved to die.

The thought of a Feast was scary, because he knew if Mina showed up one of the bigger Tributes could easily take her out, especially that Career kid from Two. The guy from Ten was also pretty strong. As a matter of fact if it came to a one on one battle the only two people he could see Mina overpower were the girl from Nine and the boy from Three, who she had been with last time they showed her. Then again, she was also with the girl from Three, the psychotic one who had attacked the siblings and killed one of them before, she seemed unstable so Bastian hoped that Mina will ditch her and continue on her own, as that had proved to work so far.

”She needs to not be so trusting of the others…” he said, under his breath, not really talking to the girl but more so speaking what was on his mind outloud.

Mina. This boy clearly liked Aamina a lot. Maybe he was her friend, or her boyfriend. Maybe her relative. People in District Twelve were actually related to each other, most of the times. Her classmates at school were cousins, or second cousins, or third cousins, or whatever. Then again, people in District Twelve looked a lot like each other. Olive skin, dark hair and gray eyes. Only Antoinette seemed to not fit that pattern. Her dark blonde hair made it clear that she did not belong at the Seam. Maybe not even in District Twelve. District One had a lot of blonde people.

Aamina seemed strong so far. Antoinette could see her win a battle against some of the tributes, but then again, it was never clear who was the stronger one in a battle. Didn't a fourteen year old overpower a guy twice her age in the 99th Hunger Games? Maybe if Aamina was lucky enough she could kill the guy from Two, or Orsino from District Ten.

His next comment made her raise an eyebrow. It was clear that he knew Aamina. He didn't speak like everyone else around them. The boy sounded as if he knew who Aamina actually was.

She turned her eyes to the screen.

" She should better leave Three soon." Antoinette commented, looking at the boy. That Ilaria girl didn't hesitate to kill a weaponless girl, so Antoinette could see her attack Aamina. And then, that would be Aamina's end. " I guess she is safe as long as she stays with Everest." Antoinette added as the camera finally moved from District Twelve's boy to Aamina and District Three's tributes.

Bastian’s first memory of the Games was when he was eight, watching the eighty-eight Games, he could remember Auryon being crowned the winner, the kills, the blood, the violence. Back then his parents were still alive, they had the Bakery and everything in his life was fine. He watched the Games, as per the rules, every year, and every year he watched as the strongest tribute became the winner, very few times had a tribute who wasn’t physically strong or ready to kill won the Games. All the Victor’s he remembered the most were ones who had a lot of kills under their belt: Paisley Wharwood, Calder Murphy, Auryon Ward, Mariano Hyland, Eden Lewis… and the list went on, but tributes who had won out of sheer mind power, he could think of three: Olivier, Uathine and Elspeth. He had heard Michael Tomsy, D12’s own Victor had won that way as well, but he hadn’t been born when his Games had been transmitted, so he couldn’t know.

But he needed to know that there was a chance, because Aamina’s biggest strength was not physical but mental; in the past four Games alone two of the Victor’s had outfoxed the competition, and even though the smartest tributes always made it close to the end, they lost in the final battle. A thought that was so grim he didn’t dare continue, because Mina had to survive, and come back, there was no other way.

“She should better leave Three soon. I guess she is safe as long as she stays with Everest.” the voice of the girl next to him made him raise his eyebrows slightly as he realized his sister was back in the screen, she was talking to the two from Three and even though she seemed safe, Bastian could clearly remember the girl attacking and killing other tributes before, Mina wasn’t safe. He had been studying her competition trying to figure out her chances, and as the numbers dwindled they seemed better and better. If only the guy from Two and the one from Ten died, she would be in the best position to win.

”She will, she is a smart one. She knows she can over-power Everest if needed, or the girl from Nine. If the other three die before, she has a really good chance.” he agreed with the girl, his eyes completely glued to the screen, on his little sister.

”She has never been much of a fighter… in an actual fight sense, she won’t give up, ever. But I don’t know if she might hesitate to stab any of the other Tributes at the end…” which was his biggest concern, that she would be too nice and not be able to kill one of the potentially weaker tributes.

The boy from Three and the girl from Nine seemed to be the weakest tributes in the arena so far, but the previous years had taught Antoinette that sometimes the tributes who seem weak are the ones who have potential. Especially the boy from Three. So far, he seemed to be everyone's friend. All of the tributes seemed to like him, or at least know him enough to not attack him. " Aamina could over-power Everest. But Everest seems to be in good terms with everybody." Antoinette spoke, looking at the screen. Even if Ilaria died, Everest would still have some kind of friend to run to. Aaron, the boy from Two seemed to be his friend, and so did the girl from Nine. The Three of them could easily make a deadly trio.

" Well, we can't call our latest victors fighters, can we?" Antoinette commented, crossing her arms in front of her chest. " I mean, only Auryon Ward could be concidered a fighter. Neither Elspeth, nor Aster or Uaithne can be called fighters. They were just swinging some weapon around." From the three of them, Aster seemed to be the toughest tribute, but she had formed a pretty strong alliance with that Aria girl.

Would Aamina be one of those sweet tributes who sacrificed themselves in the end? Antoinette didn't know Aamina weel enough to judge her, but it would be a pity if she did so. That kind of tributes were losers in Antoinette's eyes. They were supposed to kill in there, not make friends. " She won't, she is not stupid." Antoinette assured the boy.

As the girl spoke Bastian’s eyes diverted to her once again, there was something oddly familiar about her. Which was strange because everyone in Twelve had darker skin and hair than she did, the only other blonde that she knew was Tristan Tomsy, who he wasn’t a huge fan of after he kissed his sister. This girl though, there was something about her, and not only that but how she seemed to know about the Games, she talked about the Victor’s like she had been paying close attention. Was she one of those people who trained for the Games? Like Tristan, or that girl Jill.

“She won’t, she is not stupid.” the girl said as a reply to his comment about Mina not being able to kill another tribute, once again his eyes went back to the screen as he looked at his sister, the way she was carrying herself in the Arena. She had been smart so far, the only time she had gotten in any kind of trouble had been during her fight with that stupid Indigo kid, but he was dead now, so things were looking up for her once again, besides her leg, of course.

”She is definitively not stupid, but she tends to put her emotions first, or the emotions of others…” he said grimly hoping that this time she would be able to get over the one thing that could truly affect her while in the Arena. She was so close to becoming a Victor, and returning to his side, she had to be able to. No other options were plausible.

”It goes without saying that I hope the Career boy, and the one from Ten die soon. Just to improve her chances. If anything.” he added, he wasn’t sure how the girl would react to him wishing death to two teenagers but he didn’t care, she couldn’t possibly understand how he was feeling.

" Ten may actually die, soon." Antoinette commented after the boy spoke. " He is alone, and he surely lost some of his energy on One." Antoinette had studied the Games well enough to know that being involved in fights too early did not work in someone's advantage. They victors were usually those tributes who managed to sta unharmed until the very end of the final day. If she ever got reaped, this would be her strategy, hide, make friends and then waste her energy once she reached the final two.

That boy certainly seemed concerned about their female tribute. Sure, everyone in the district wanted her to win, some because they liked her and others because they just wanted the food their would receive thanks to her. This boy, on the other hand, seemed to truly care about Aamina. " Did you know her?" Antoinette asked the boy, not turning her eyes from the screen. So far, Aamina seemed safe. " I mean, before the Games."

Was it rude of her to ask him such thing? Antoinette wondered what she would do if someone asked her if she was related to a tribute. She would most likely try to stay calm, but then again this was some kind of a natural talent she possessed. She always knew to hide her emotions, even when she was too afraid to do so. Her brother often told her how calm she seemed during the reapings, as if she had nothing to worry about. And the truth was that she didn't have to worry about anything, concidering that she had never taken tessarae. This year was the only one she was afraid of, and that was because of the stupid second twist.

Bastian had to admit he was somewhat surprised that the girl had not said anything about his death wish on two of the tributes, it was almost like she understood that people had to die for Mina to come back. A lot of people claimed to understand the Games, but the majority would have gotten upset over such a comment, it was almost like they didn’t understand only one could come out alive. But this girl, she was different, she seemed to really understand the Games. Unlike the moronic ladies in front of them who kept running their mouths about Mina, if Bastian was more of a pig he would have knocked them both cold already, but his father had raised him with good values.

“Did you know her? I mean, before the Games.” the girl suddenly asked, Bastian turned to look at her once again, the screen had changed to focus on some of the other tributes. Bastian looked the girl up and down trying to figure out the intent of her question, could he get in trouble for anything he had said? Then again this girl was too young to be a Peacekeeper…

”That’s my little sister…” he said as he turned to look back at the screen, avoiding her reaction. He didn’t want her pity, because he hated when people looked at him like she was going to die. Like they pitied him for having her reaped, and while he wasn’t happy about it, he didn’t want to feel inferior. Because Mina was going to come back, there was absolutely no other way.

If she didn’t… he couldn’t even think about what would happen if that was the case. He cleared his throat and looked at her again, so familiar, was she a friend of Mina from school, perhaps?
”You don’t know her, do you? From school?”

She was apparently talking to Aamina's brother. How awkward could that be? Did he concider her dumb now, for not realizing that earlier? Was he at the reapings? Antoinette honestly could not remember. She was way too worried on that day to pay attention to anything. She expected her name to be picked, since she was Michael Tomsy's niece, so when she heard a different name, she practically didn't care about anything else in the world. Now she wished she did. She was a victor's niece, it was her duty to remember small details about the tributes. She had to make the family of those tributes feel better. Or, at least she felt that she had to do it.

Then, the boy asked her if she knew Aamina. " Well, we shared some classes, but we never really spoke to each other." Antoinette replied, somehow wishing that she knew the girl better. They were both sixteen, they both had older brothers, they had lots of things in common and yet they never spoke to each other. Antoinette was somehow glad about it, at least she wouldn't feel that bad if the girl died. She was always proud of her ability to hide her emotions, but she was not sure what she would do if one of her friends died. Merridian, for example.

" Excuse me, I forgot to introduce myself." Antoinette suddenly spoke, for a moment wondering if it would be a good idea to tell who she was. This boy expected her uncle to bring Aamina home and Antoinette had heard lots of parents commenting uncle Michael's mentoring skills. " I'm Antoinette Tomsy." she finally said, trying not to sound too proud about her name. She didn't want the boy think that she was some spoiled brat.

The dirty blonde confirmed his suspicions, she hadn’t known Mina, despite taking a couple of classes with her they had never actually been friends. It made sense, but it didn’t really explain where he had seen her before, and why she looked so familiar. That is, until she spoke again, her last name was a dead-ringer, in front of him was not only the niece of District Twelve’s only Victor but the sister of Tristan, who he had punched before, after he had kissed Mina at the Capitol building.

He stared at her for a few seconds, unsure on what to say; truth be told he had never been a huge fan of Tomsy, he was a drunk mess most of the time and he had a really bad reputation. All the tributes he had trained had died, and even though Tristan had said he would be sober for Mina and he would actually try, Bastian doubted that would be the case. But Mina was strong and she didn’t need Tomsy to survive, she had not so far, so why would she start now?

“I knew you looked familiar, you look like your brother.” he said with a certain distaste, he wasn’t a huge fan of Tristan, not because he was a bad kid but because of his romantic interest in his sister. He was over-protective, what could he say?

”How come you are out here watching the Games? I know you have a big television at home, your brother showed it to me before.” he mentioned, remembering the time Tristan had invited him over to watch the Games. At first he had been hesitant since that meant he had to spend time with him, but after a lot of thought he had decided it was for the best, in case something happened to Mina… he would have someone to take his rage out on.

The boy, Aamina's brother knew Tristan? Antoinette always had the impression that her brother's only friends were those sorry careers he trained with. It was not that Tristan was un-social, he just didn't seem as especially friendly to Antoinette. The Games seemed to play an important role in his life and Antoinette always believed that training had costed him friends. Maybe that was the reason she didn't train anymore, aside of the fact that she was just plainly lazy of training with a certain weapon for more than two months.

" I didn't know that Tristan had friends." Antoinette joked ligthly, not daring to smile. This would probably annoy the boy, who was watching his sister fighting for her life. Antoinette would probably be annoyed by anything if she had to see Tristan or Merridian on live television, fighting their way home.

Antoinette honestly did not know the answer of his quiestion. There was not a particular reason she had come there to watch the Games. " My uncle's house is too empty when he is away." she answered to the boy.

Bastian did not find her comment about being Tritan’s friend amusing whatsoever, he wasn’t his friend whatsoever, as a matter of fact he couldn’t be further away from that even if he tried. She was not smiling, which meant she actually meant it, he bit his tongue to stop himself from telling her off about it, after all he didn’t want to start an argument in the middle of the District Square and miss the Games. He had to keep both his attitude and his hot head in check so he could continue to watch over Mina.

Antoinette Tomsy continued by telling him how lonely she got when her uncle was away, he wasn’t sure if it was just a comment or if she was trying to get some pity that her uncle was away at the Capitol. But if that was the case he wasn’t going to get it from Bastian, his sister was in the Games, Tomsy was completely fine probably wining and dining around the Capitol enjoying the life of a Victor.

”At least you have a television. I wish I didn’t have to watch everything here. Some of the comments irritate me…” he admitted as he heard the ladies in front of them make another snide comment about Mina’s chances.

The ladies made another comment about Aamina's chances and for a moment Antoinette turned her eyes to them. " You shouldn't give a damn about the comments." Antoinette finally said to Bastian, turning her eyes back to the screen. It seemed that Day Five would only have three kills, which was still a rather big number. With six tributes in the arena, the Capitol would probably rush out to finish them quicklier. They had to plan three more Games, after all, and if these Games lasted for weeks, a year wouldn't be enough for five Games. Still, a feast wouldn't be a good thing for Aamina. Not at all. That could easily kill her, actually.

" They don't know anything about the Games anyway." Antoinette continued, not removing her eyes from the screen. Her few years of training had taught her some inner things about strategy in the Games. Antoinette knew what gamemakers tended to do and she was sure that she could easily make her way to the career pack if she ever got reaped.

" Mina stands a pretty good change, unless the Gamemakers make a feast. Still, assuming that she is with District Three's tributes, she could fight by their side. The boy from Ten is alone, I bet he would be the first to die if a feast ever happened. Then, once she and Three kill the remaining tributes, we can only hope that Ilaria and Everest lost a lot of blood." Antoinette said, and her eyebrows frowned a little when the ladies in front of her made another comment about Aamina being used as a puppy by District Three's tributes. Then, one of them tossed something about her hoping that Aamina will win, so she could receive the free potion of food. Ugh. Was that what they all cared about? Then again, Antoinette couldn't understand. She never experienced hugner. The only time she didn't eat at home was when her mother prepared a food she hated, like spinach or vegetable soup.

Little Tomsy gave him some words of encouragement which he was somewhat thankful for. He might not know the girl but so far he liked her far more than she liked Michael or Tristan, clearly she was the kinder of the Tomsy’s. She seemed to believe in Mina, which gave him a certain ease as well, someone else had to believe in him so he could keep hope alive.

" Mina stands a pretty good change, unless the Gamemakers make a feast. Still, assuming that she is with District Three's tributes, she could fight by their side. The boy from Ten is alone, I bet he would be the first to die if a feast ever happened. Then, once she and Three kill the remaining tributes, we can only hope that Ilaria and Everest lost a lot of blood." little Tomsy said, Bastian knew she was right, a Feast could prove fatal for his little sister. Truth be told she was the underdog at that point, she had only one ally [two if you counted the girl from Three, but he didn’t as she was one sketchy character], she wasn’t particularly physically strong, and now that her biggest strength was impaired by her flawed leg she could run into some trouble. But Bastian was not ready to give up on her yet.

”She’s determined. She has more heart than any of the others. I know she can come back a Victor. If her leg was working she would absolutely have this in the bag, but with that injured…” he stopped himself as the negative train of thought was not the way he wanted to approach the whole situation. And then, an idea came to his mind. ”Your uncle… he can send her something for her leg, right?” it seemed like a stupid question as he knew the answer, but perhaps asking might make little Tomsy’s kind heart want to help somehow, after all she had to be able to communicate with the Victor, right?

I’m so sorry, that was absolutely awful,
my muse seems to be dead in a ditch somewhere :-/

Antoinette was not sure what to say to the boy. She didn't want to tell him that medicine would most likely be more expensive than her uncle's tv, but she didn't want to lie to him either. She could easily assure him that her uncle could send her a sponsorship gift, she could even call her uncle and beg him to do it, but what if he told her that there were few people willing to sponsor Aamina? What if he told her that he didn't have enough money? The boy would probably hate her and so would half of the District.

" He can easily do, but he needs money. I hope that he found her sponsors, but the prices rise every day. Just a small bottle of ointment probably has the same price as four cars." Antoinette replied to the boy, somehow sure that he would blaim her for her uncle's mentoring abilities. People always did that. When she was in her first grade, some girl approached her, yelling at her because her uncle could't save her cousin, or sister. Luckily, Tristan had helped her, or else she would return home bleeding.

" I... I could phone him, if you want, and ask him about it, but I can't promise you anything." she reluctantly added, not wanting to give too much hope to the boy.
