• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Michael actually relaxed a bit at her assessment. Why did her losing control make him less inclined to be wary, he wondered, almost bitterly amused with himself under the chill that still saturated his skin. Because it meant she hadn't plotted it out, slowly murdered someone consciously. It had just been instinct. Her instincts would still be far too raw after a second games wouldn't they? He'd barely been in the arena, but he remembered how after his first arena he'd had to be so careful not to let his natural reaction to things show. And he knew it was probably harder for Auryon who was always seemed to be so in tune with her instincts.

And now they were trying to protect her and she was doing...things that could get her in danger. He tired to imagine just sort of...waking up and realizing he'd murdered someone.

And didn't the guy she'd murdered matter at all? A small voice asked. Why didn't that matter at all? Michael's jaw tightened. An us vs them mentality was something he'd always tried to not adopt, but he couldn't escape it entirely. But no matter what this district resident had done, Michael wasn't going to justify Auryon's reaction. It was over and done and the important thing was to try and ensure nothing like that ever...happened again. It was what happened when the Capitol played with people's minds and tortured them, separated them from the people they loved. How did someone fix that?

Yea he had no idea. His solution to this sort of thing was alcohol.

Michael didn't ask any more questions right away, didn't reply because he couldn't think of a way to respond to what she'd said until he figured out what the next step was. He was pretty sure he had some clothes in the house that might fit her, because his grandmother's things were in the attic and her old room...some of them were actually from when she was younger. Nothing of his would fit her certainly...but Auryon couldn't leave in clothes that looked like that.

As the quiet filled the room again, Auryon became very aware of her heart pounding in her chest, anxious or scared of something. She was holding it back, not sure she wanted to admit it too. Auryon was always strong. She didn’t bend to anyone’s will. She didn’t let much touch her. Sitting here with Michael, however, she’d never felt weaker, more vulnerable. There was no one here she needed to be strong for. She was already relying on him for so much, trusting him with so much. Part of her wanted to keep the last of her fears with her, but if she kept it, she could never release it. Admitting it would help to get rid of the fear, and she’d feel more like herself later. Not soon, but eventually. If Michael was going to judge her, he would have done it already right? He would have shunned her sooner than now. What was one more secret for him to keep for her?

“It… scares me.” She hesitantly admitted. “It shouldn’t though, right? Why should it bother me? It’s not like I’ve never killed anyone before. I’ve killed twelve!” Four of those people were still alive, but she still considered them her kills. “Why should thirteen be any different?” Auryon tried for bitterness again, but failed, whispering the question instead. The trembling that had calmed a while ago seized her body again. It was subtler than before, not as violent or prominent, but it was there. “My instinct… told me to kill. Not to help Ryan or protect him, or even catch the driver. Murder. That was my first instinct…” Auryon hadn’t looked at Michael since he asked her what happened, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to now, but if she wanted any kind of an honest answer, she needed to, so she raised her head from his shoulder to see his eyes when he answered. “What does that make me?”

Michael looked at her and tried to find the right words. But the words wouldn't arrive. What did that make her? What kind of question was that. She didn't sound like she normally did. There was a hesitant quality to her that made him all too aware how important the answer to this question might be. Meeting her gaze was hard, but he did it instead of continuing to stare down away.

"Dangerous," the word slipped out before he was ready to reply, the most honest answer he could give. He was surprised at the quality to his voice. It was off...almost unsure.

She was too close and it suddenly felt almost as though by lowering her masks she'd gotten under his skin. He couldn't lie and he couldn't look away from her because he had to see what damage his words might have caused.

“Dangerous…” Auryon echoed quietly, testing the label out herself. That wasn’t what she had thought of, but it was somehow… better. She’d always considered herself dangerous. Deadly even. But outside of her performance in the Games there hadn’t been much to support that description. Lately, however, it seemed everything Auryon did made her dangerous: threatening Nims, attacking Paisley, murdering a stranger. “To everyone.” She added. Herself included. What happened the next time Aleron got struck by a frantic family member of a patient? Or the next time she got angry at Michael? Or when she finally got fed up with being used as a toy?

“Even you.” She still craved Michael’s warmth, his touch, his comfort, but she forced her hands to open and release his shirt. “And Ryan.” For the first time since she’d regained her senses in the woods Auryon stopped thinking about what she wanted. If she was seen, or if the body was found, what would happen to Michael for helping her afterwards? What would happen to Aleron because of her crime?

Those thoughts brought a wave of fear crashing over her and she abruptly stood, breaking her contact with the warmth that was keeping her together. “I shouldn’t have come here.” She shouldn’t return home either. She should go back to the woods and stay there. It was abandoning Aleron, but if it was to protect him from her… she’d do it.

For a moment he actually thought he hadn't done harm. But she continued, and as she did apprehension crept through him until she released him and stood. Her words rang in his ears and his heart, and the cold that had numbed him was ripped away along with what felt frighteningly like the defensive good nature he kept as a misty barricade between the rest of the world and whatever lurked underneath.

He rose after her, moving to stand between her and the exit. He was under no delusions where his physical strength was concerned. Auryon could beat him into the ground without even trying. He wasn't scared of that half as much as he was of her walking out looking the way she was though. And her interpretation of his assessment, accurate though it might be, made him angry. It was pointless to argue over it. Could she be dangerous to him? Sure she could. Ryan...her brother? Possibly. But she was in control now and Michael was going to let her leave now over his dead body. Which was of course, always a possible solution should she want to leave that badly. Instead of touching on that issue, like perhaps he should have, he focused on what her actions and last words had implied.

"Where exactly are you going?" he asked in a deceptively languid tone, his eyes trained on her, every muscle tensed. She was stronger than he was. Probably a hell of a lot faster than him too. So he'd have to rely on the element of surprise and his infamous luck to help him win this fight if it moved beyond words. "Because I can tell you where you aren't going. And that's outside, looking like that," he continued, his tone pleasant enough. Runner trotted around him, sitting beside him and panting as she stared at their visitor with renewed interest.

He was going to stand in her way? After they just finished talking about how dangerous she was and how capable she was of murder outside of her arenas? Anger filled her first, and green eyes narrowed as she shifted her weight onto the balls of her feet. She could make him move. Tackle him to the ground and spring past him. Knock him aside. Just walk past him and overpower him if he really intended to stop her. It couldn’t even be that hard. She was younger, taller, heavier. Probably better balanced too. But he had to know that. He said he’d known she would win the Games, which meant he knew she could beat him even if he hadn’t chosen to give up. So why was he going to put himself in harm’s way?

“I’m going where I won’t endanger anyone.” She told him, voice lowered in a warning tone. “Do not get in my way. I will make you move.” Auryon had no real desire to hurt Michael, and that was exactly why she wanted to leave. As much as she loved being out in the woods, hunting, running, feeling free if only for a few hours, she needed human contact to remain herself. In the interest of protecting Aleron, however, she’d give it up. She'd lose herself. He was more important. Always.

"If you leave now, looking like that, there is the chance that someone will see you. That would endanger me," he pointed out lightly. And herself. What exactly did that mean anyway, go where she wouldn't endanger anyone?

He needed her not to bolt so he could find a way to get her to tell him exactly what she planned. She was being evasive which he took as a very bad sign. If she was just planning on going home she would have just said that. Not that he would have just stepped aside if that were where she was going. He couldn't chance her being seen like that. At least she had warned him, he thought grimly, instead of simply 'moving' him.

"You need to get cleaned up and change before you go anywhere," he continued. He hadn't missed how she'd shifted her weight and the anger now directed at him. He was still careful to not seem wary of her...even though he was concerned for her he knew it would be too easy for her mistake that for wariness of her. Which he was, but that was besides the point. They both already knew he stood no chance of keeping her there if she chose to leave. He could really only hope she would listen to logic, because otherwise he was going to make her go through him, something he was fairly sure he wouldn't enjoy at all.

Auryon had been prepared to lunge at him, favoring her tacking him to the ground plan, when Michael mentioned that being seen looking as she did could endanger him. She froze, still poised to tackle him, and tried to think. She was endangering him by being here, but she would endanger him by leaving. The sun was higher than when she’d arrived. More people would be up. How highly populated was the area around the Victor’s Village? Auryon didn’t know. Her own certainly wasn’t private, but there were more Victors. More people. Was she willing to risk it? Her eyes darted from Michael, to the door, to the window, trying to decide before realizing it wasn’t such a hard choice.

Her feet slowly flattened back down on the floor, and Auryon gave a heavy sigh. She couldn’t chance leaving now. Not unless she wanted to increase the risk to Michael. She wasn’t sure she’d gotten here unseen, but she would be even less sure of remaining hidden if she left now. He’d beaten her. She wouldn’t be going anywhere for a while, and that realization made her feel very tired. Exhaustion washed over her and an ache from sore muscles pushed its way into her awareness. “Fine.” She breathed, defeated.

"Don't look so down about it. It's not that bad here," maybe he shouldn't have made light of it, but the need to clear some of the tension from the air outweighed common sense for Michael. As it so often did.

It should have felt like a victory, but the way the life seemed to drain from her just ended up making him almost wish she'd kept fighting. Reminding himself he was trying to help her did little good when he had seen how 'helpful' he'd been thus far to the people he was supposed to care about, he moved forward with some hesitance.

"I can show you to one of the rooms where you can get cleaned up while I try and find something that will fit you if you'd like," he offered. Someone on the other end of the house from where the kids were. Because if Tristan or Antoinette caught sight of Auryon...but they wouldn't. They wouldn't be up for some time yet and the manor was huge. Often they slipped out of the house in the morning without him even being aware they'd gone.

Normally remarks like that from Michael elicited some kind of response from Auryon. A scowl, and biting remark back, a faint smile on occasion, but she gave him nothing this time. She felt… empty. No anger, no protective instinct, no fire at all. Just cold, fatigue, and some residual traces of pain. It wasn’t a feeling she was used to. She always had something to hold to (usually anger or revenge), but Michael’s words had quashed all of it. She’d never felt so completely… defeated.

Auryon nodded slowly in response to his offer. Maybe it’d help to see what she looked like… to see what Michael saw. Maybe it’d reassure her of her decision to stay by letting her see what others would see if she left. Or maybe it’d just help to get it off of her. All of it. Aleron’s and the driver’s. Anything had to be an improvement over how she felt now, and that would be a step in the right direction.

It was startling and very wrong to see her so dispirited. Michael watched her for a moment before scratching the back of his head, his hat tilting forward with the motion and wary nodding in return. One step at a time. Maybe she'd feel better after she was no longer cloaked in dirt and blood anyhow. It reminded him rather forcefully of the hunger games just to see her like that and he had to admit it would make him feel a hell of a lot better when she no longer looked like she'd just stepped off a battlefield.

So he gestured towards the door, solemn and feeling strangely bereft as he navigated the long halls that were empty of sound but for their footfalls. Usually they echoed with a tune. A melody. And as the silence stretched, Michael automatically began to hum one despite the despondence he still felt. He realized as the music lifted his spirits a bit, that he'd actually never had another Victor in his home before. Actually, no one had been there but family. And the question that had bothered him earlier returned. He waited until they reached an appropriate room, opening the door and glancing inside to make sure it was the one he'd remembered. His grandmother had insisted they furnish everything, more so they could give some of the money he had towards furniture makers and others who needed the money than because it really mattered.

He turned towards Auryon, his brows furrowed together. "Why did you come here?" He held up a hand, realizing how easily what he had said could be misconstrued. "Whatever you think about the danger you might represent, I am more that willing to provide sanctuary and whatever help I can offer you. But why did you trust me with this?"

It wasn't like Twelve was close to Four. How many Victor manors lie between Four and Twelve? Or even people outside of the Victor population...since Victors so rarely trusted each other. How many people that she could have turned to instead? He couldn't say for sure if Auryon had anyone else though. He remembered her earlier remark. Her brother. Her brother was everything to her. It was possible she hadn't trusted anyone else. But why did she trust him? He watched her closely, uneasily waiting for her response before he would leave the room.

Auryon followed Michael in the silence, giving no objection and no comment. His mansion was laid out differently than hers. They all probably were, but the only one Auryon was familiar with was her own. So her eyes glanced around the hallways, counting windows as she counted footsteps, judging distances and heights. It was a habit that she couldn’t shake even feeling like this. She was in an unfamiliar place and while she’d come here for safety, Auryon was concerned that she’d compromised that safety. Her observation paled in comparison to her usual watchful nature, but it was all she could manage right now.

Her eyes darted back to Michael, however, as his humming replaced the silence. It comforted her, made her feel something besides the exhaustion gripping her body and she found herself hanging on his every note. Like before, however, his song ended too early although this ending hadn’t been as abrupt as the last one. He’d stopped at one room that Auryon assumed she could use for the time being, and turned to her with a question, Auryon was hesitant to answer.

The loneliness Auryon had felt on her way her, suddenly gripped her again. Did she want to admit to Michael that she had nowhere else to go? That she couldn’t trust anyone else because she couldn’t tolerate anyone else? That she’d meant it when she’d told him Aleron was all she had? Auryon occupied herself for several long minutes, studying the room he’d brought her to, counting and estimating. She was… reassured by his words. They could be just that. Words. But… Auryon didn’t think he was lying to her. And even if she was wrong… his words comforted her.

“I… didn’t have anywhere else to go.” She said softly. “You’re… the closest thing I have to a friend.” It sounded childish to her ear, but Auryon’s personality didn’t exactly lend itself well to cultivating relationships. “You helped me before, in the hospital. And I… just thought I could trust you again.”

Michael's eyes widened a bit in surprise. At the hospital he had helped her...but then she'd told him to leave. And besides he'd sort of thought he'd ended up doing more harm in the long run since she'd been upset when he'd left. But his mind hadn't been in the right place then anyway. It still wasn't. The chill of fear that the eye of the capitol was on him, that another punishment was lurking, waiting to hurt people he cared about. He was surprised for a long moment at her reply because he sincerely doubted most people would consider him truly trustworthy. He wasn't exactly known for being responsible...his family certainly hadn't thought so.

But Auryon did. She'd trusted him with a secret that could get her killed. Or have the Capitol striking out at her brother if anyone found out. As for not having anywhere else to go...Michael realized most Victors could say the same. He was rather outgoing, but he didn't think he would have known where to go if he were in her circumstances.

He reached up to touch her shoulder, a light grin on his face, but a bitter sweet sadness in his gut that just reached his eyes. "Thank you for trusting me," he said quietly. She might not know how much that meant to him, and it might not be the right time to say it, so he cleared his throat and looked away quickly dropping his hand. "I'll go find you something to change into. Probably won't fit perfect but there should be something close enough." He offered quickly.

Auryon didn’t claim to be too good a judge of what others were feeling, which considering her usual lack of consideration for those feelings, wasn’t much of a surprise. She read intent very well in combat and body language when it came to the physical body, but she had very little talent at deciphering the more subtle signs people used. Michael’s surprise was easy enough to see, although Auryon didn’t know what about what she said was surprising. That she trusted him? Well, that might be fair considering the general lack of trust that the Victors as a whole had for everything and everyone (herself included). There was something else though. Something deeper that Auryon only saw briefly and couldn’t even begin to analyze even if she was more adept at it.

His hand fell on her shoulder, and he thanked her. Considering the damage Auryon thought she was capable of doing to him by being here, trusting him seemed to be an odd thing to show gratitude for, but she wasn’t exactly in the mood to offer a sarcastic reply, so she gave no reply at all. Her shoulder felt warm even after Michael withdrew his hand, reminding her of how much she still craved someone’s touch. But it was better not to give in to that now. She just needed to clean up so she could leave without endangering him further. “That’s fine.” She said in response to his offer. Because really, at this point, Auryon had a feeling that once she got out of the clothes she currently wore, she would settle for a sheet to replace them. Anything had to be an improvement.

Michael bowed his head before exiting the room. His mood had lightened considerably. For what reason he couldn't exactly pinpoint, but as Runner bounded up to him and he started to hum, then whistle as he counted doors until he came to the right room. Since most of the doors looked the same, counting was necessary. He shoved the door open and wandered into a room full of boxes.

The tune he hummed was strange, he noted as he grabbed random clothing that looked like it would fit. Michael wasn't exactly a fashion guru, preferring to let his stylists have free reign (not that there was much of a choice there) when he was in the capitol, and wearing whatever was most comfortable when he was at home. He didn't even bother choosing anything, just grabbed anything that looked like it might fit before exiting the room and wandering back down the hall. He had just turned the door knob when he realized maybe he shouldn't just walk in. He stopped humming and knocked on the door.

Runner jumped on her hind legs and scratched at the door impatiently.
