• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

The 101-Fall Hunger Games are wrapping up. You have 24-48 hours to enter the final posts. Members can still post in the "History of Sixth Station" and the "Connection" forums.

Toasty heard that there was a haunted house in District Six, and ever since then, he had begged Nims to take him out. The others didn’t care that much and Nims tried to distract his furchild with things less frightening, but Toasty insisted on going out for a walk. And, not to Nims’ surprise, the little pomeranian lead right to the alleged haunted house.

Nims had nothing against houses, nor did he have anything against places that were considered haunted. But Nims didn’t want to go and actually visit a haunted house.

And he really didn’t expect to be stuck there, either.

But there he was, sitting on the second story of the haunted house, looking down to where the staircase had once been. Legs dangling over the landing, he considered dropping down to the first floor, but there was a great crack in the boards that suggested maybe the first floor wasn’t so secure at all, and he might very well go careening straight into the basement. Maybe when he was younger, he would have taken the chances, but now he had his child to look after, and Nims didn’t dare take the plunge for fear that Toasty might be injured.

Kiva loved her people. She really did. It wasn’t very often that she managed to go out and about in the streets. She liked being with the other Victors, even if all of them didn’t necessarily get along. The only thing that she really tended to mind was the fact that, besides herself, the last female Victor District Six had managed to bring home had been a whole forty years before she had been reaped. She didn’t like to keep a grudge, however, so she toyed with the screwdriver in her hand; twisting and turning it over and over.. In the beginning, she had whined enough. She had complained enough. She was, pretty much, over it by now. She had met a lot of Victors through the years. Some were great, and others weren’t, but she had learned a wonderful lesson from all of them.

In the hub of District Six where she stayed, there was a haunted house. In all reality, it wasn’t all that haunted. It was just where she liked to set up shop and work on projects. She was trying to make a little music box, although she was having trouble with it actually playing anything. She felt like she was close enough that it could happen any day now, but there was always something missing. With a sigh, she sat back in her hair and pushed her hair out of her face. Like most days, it was pulled up. A simple ponytail, she had neglected to do anything extremely elegant to it. There was no point when she was going to be spending the majority of her day in her workspace – the lab was in the basement of the supposed haunted house.

The home had gotten the nickname when she had first won her Games. She had used it as a place to escape everything that happened. When she felt the need to create stuff, she’d sneak into the basement to build stuff. Almost a little angrily, Kiva pushed the music box away from her and dropped the screwdriver and the wrench she had been using to try to get it to work. She pushed herself away and bent down to grab her bag. She pulled it over her shoulders and adjusted the clothes she had on. She draped a white sheet over her work and made her way upstairs. It was weird, but she could have sworn that she smelled dog. She found that especially odd, considering she hadn’t been too fond of the animals – at least not enough to bring one into her workspace.

She hummed as she walked along, one hand on the strap of her bag and the other one swinging at her side. She could have sworn that there was someone else around. She paused at the base of the stairs and glanced around, eyes landing on a familiar face. Eyes widening a little, she tilted her head to the side and let them narrow at the person above her. “What’re you doing here?” She asked curiously. “I wasn’t aware anyone was going to visit.”

Nims had resigned himself to sit at the top of the broken staircase for all eternity, but he didn’t expect someone else to come along. In the darkness of the house where the only light was the natural sunlight that filtered through dusty windows, he could see the shape of the person well enough, though the face was a little tougher to make out. Then again, Nims was not always the best at recognizing faces.

The staircase, from the bottom where the person currently stood, ascended about four or five steps before ceasing to exist. Then there was a gap where the majority of the staircase had collapsed only minutes prior while Nims and Toasty were upstairs in one of the bedrooms exploring. Finally, it came to the second-floor landing on which Nims now sat with Toasty in his arms.

“Is this your house?” Nims asked, immediately embarrassed that he had managed to destroy someone’s staircase just by walking up it. “I thought this place was abandoned.”

Kiva really couldn’t kick the feeling away when she tried, but she couldn’t help but feel as there was something that she was forgetting that she really ought to mention. Instead, she let her eyes focus on Nims. It was always a pleasure to see the other Victors around, especially if they surprised her in her own District. There was nothing quite like that little moment of panic that she got when she first saw them that often got her brain to kick into gear. By that, she meant that she hadn’t been expecting to see Nims; hadn’t expected him to make an appearance at all. So, when she did first spot him, the first thing that had popped into her mind went along the lines of: ‘Did I forget I invited him or something? Did someone else invite him and forget to tell me? Is my place compromised?’ Admittedly, it was a little ridiculous that one of the first things she had thought about was whether or not her secret place had been compromised. But, honestly, the brunette had put a lot of work into the basement and making sure it wouldn’t collapse on her while she was working on something important.

Because, it was also kind of incredibly ridiculous, and perhaps it had happened to some of the other Victors before her, but Kiva tended to forget about the outside world when someone wasn’t forcing her to be a part of it. By that, she meant Hal. Sometimes, she got so caught up in her projects that she forgot that she had promised to do something or the other. After running all these ideas through her head, she finally came to the conclusion that no one had mentioned to her that Nims was stopping by for a visit. It meant that the older Victor had stopped by of his own accord. It also meant that Kiva had to pull herself together before she made a giant fool of herself. So, she shook her head slightly and pulled her bag closer to her, as if doing it was a sort of comforting mechanism for herself. The house was…well, dangerous. Why it was that it wasn’t destroyed and torn apart to make way for a new, useful building was beyond her, but she was thankful that no one had thought of doing it just yet.

She had needed a place where no one could find her. If someone thought of destroying this deathtrap, she’d have to do her hobby in her own home, and there would be no escaping from anyone if they tried to find her there. So, when Nims asked if this was her home, she couldn’t stop the laugh that rose its way through her as she shook her head at his question. Instead, she crossed her arms in front of her awkwardly and looked up at him, amused. She understood that District 6 wasn’t the richest one around, but they could afford okay looking houses. At least, she could…And, cue the slightly guilty wince. Even fourteen years later, she still felt guilty about killing those people. Instead, she swallowed the lump in her throat and nodded at him. “Kind of, but not really. No one else really comes here, so I kind of kidnapped the basement to do my own stuff.” Kiva shrugged her shoulders, a little embarrassed. “Did you get stuck up there?”

((No problem! Sorry about that. Hope this is better? <3))

The basement? Woah, Nims didn’t even know that there was a basement, and now he found out that this person was using it for her nefarious purposes. Likely a laboratory for creating biohazards. Nims hadn’t met many evil scientists—Capitolites aside. But really, no evil evil scientists because most of the Capitolites weren’t really evil with crazy laboratories for their experiments. And now Nims had likely just smashed the basement door closed forever when the staircase fell, and there was no one to feed the angry beasts below. Bummer.

“Oh, no, I’m not stuck. I’m just enjoying the view,” Nims said pleasantly.

((No worries.))

Her eyebrow hitched upwards, but she wasn’t about to disagree with him. She knew better than to do that. Besides, this was supposed to be her happy place. She was sure, though it seemed like there were no possible way, that she’d be able to build a pulley later and have one of the other Victors lower her down long enough to grab some of the more valuable things she had been building to see if any of it was salvageable. Normally, she might have blown her gasket. Had it been anyone else, it was likely that she would have gone off and given them some long lecture or tackled them, holding their head in a headlock. The 28 year old would have been lying if she said that the thought hadn’t crossed her mind.

It had.

Repeatedly within the first couple of seconds.

But, she managed to suck in a deep breath and hold it for 3 seconds before releasing it. It had been one of the things she had been working on – calming down instead of freaking out or crying when her stuff was destroyed. Mostly because she tended to break most of her stuff on her own; it usually happened when she tripped over some wayward wrench. There were times when she wished that she had kept the one that had helped her so much fourteen years ago, but that was impossible. They never would have let her.

“Do you have a habit of doing that?” She asked, humming a little as she turned, trying to spot a place where she could climb up to sit next to him. So far, she couldn’t find one. She opted for crossing her arms in front of her chest and eyed him. She wasn’t certain that there was a dog there next to him. She wouldn’t really know; she couldn’t see very well from the spot that she was standing at. “Sneak into the other districts? If I would have known you were coming, I would have gotten you some stuff.”
