• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

The department store might as well have been a prison or a tomb. Tall rows of clothing hanging on racks formed barricades that kept Eldin from seeing across the store. They smooshed her in with suffocating fabrics and bright sales signs. It was as though someone had bought excess inventory and tried to squeeze it into too small of space without taking into consideration safety hazards or health regulations.

But it also had its advantages. When Eldin had safely lost her mother, she slowed her pace and allowed herself to browse through the store. Mom thought she needed new dresses to wear around, something delicate to enhance Eldin’s “serene beauty.” It was a load of crock, but Eldin wasn’t about to tell her mother that. What Mom didn’t know wouldn’t hurt her, and she’d rather not indulge her adventurous lifestyle. It was certainly something that would make her mother swoon. Dear Eldin, not Eldin, she was too sick to go outdoors.

The outdoors made her feel great.

Better than she felt in her entire life.

Unlike this place. This strange, claustrophobic department store with racks too high and clothing too many. She couldn’t wait until they left. Who cared what dresses Mom picked out for her? Eldin turned to the nearest display of boots and decided that she’d get a pair. Tell her mother something to make it enticing to buy. Something about how good boots would keep her healthy.

Patience loved shopping. Not really, but kind of. She didn’t have tons of money or anything, but she could go and stare at clothing all day. The newspapers had advertised a sale, and they didn’t disappoint. She found an entire rack of clothing 75% off today only. And it was cool clothing, too. Clothes that made her look more sophisticated. Things that would impress her classmates so they wouldn’t think she was such a child.

She pulled a shirt off the rack and held it up to her chest. Twisting and turning, she tried to figure out how it would actually look on her, but there was no way to really tell. She turned and looked around for a mirror, but this place was practically a maze. She ought to have brought rations. Maybe she could get her classmates to come in here for practice of a survival situation.

Grabbing a couple more items, she heaved them into her arms and headed out to look for a mirror or the dressing rooms or something. She took a corner and nearly plowed into some girl about her age. “Excuse me,” she said.

“You’re excused,” Eldin replied. She danced backwards a step to put distance between the girl and herself. She wanted to say that people ought to watch where they’re going, but she didn’t even really know who had bumped into whom. The store had entranced her to the extent that she didn’t even realize she had walked away from the boot display with a pair of boots in her arms.

Patience sized up the girl in front of her. She wasn’t expecting that sort of reply. Pursing her lips for a moment, she decided she’d make use of the situation.

“You know where the dressing rooms are?” she asked. The disadvantage of being short was, well, exactly this. The other girl wasn’t much better off, but maybe she had just come from the dressing rooms or something. She readjusted the clothing in her arms as she tried to balance them without dropping. Next time, she’d bring a shopping bag.

Eldin shook her head.

“No idea,” she said. “Your guess is as good as mine.”

Actually, Eldin wasn’t even sure which direction she had come from or where she would even begin to find her mother to show her the boots.

Patience pivoted to look around her. Sale signs blocked her vision of most of the walls that might have offered guidance for people lost in the clothing. Yeah, this was definitely a survival situation.

What had Patience learned? Keep calm. Try to orientate herself. Find food, water and shelter. Make fire.

She’d save the last one as a last resort, but she could at least try to figure out where other landmarks were. And she wasn’t panicked in the least, so she already had the “calm” thing down. Maybe a little uneasy, but nothing she couldn’t handle.

“Where’d you come from?” she asked. “Did you see any cash registers or something?”

Eldin never imagined one could get lost inside of a department store, but as the other girl spoke, she realized that it very well might be a reality. She didn’t know where the exit was, she hadn’t seen any reasonable signs, and there was no hint of any employees. How irritating.

And yet, not. There was also something serene about it, like some strange clothing forest where metal branches stuck out like tree limbs and clothing dangled like leaves. Except it smelled weird and if she weren’t careful one of the metal limbs would jab her in the face or shoulder.

“No. I don’t know anything. You keep asking me questions, but you’re not getting anywhere,” Eldin said.

Patience crossed her arms over her chest and craned her neck to peer over the racks of clothing. It did little good. She drew in a deep breath. Maybe she should try to keep moving. That would help, right?

Then came a scream. A startling, ear-piercing scream. Patience started and looked wide-eyed at the girl in front of her.

“What was that?!” she asked.

"A scream," Eldin said bluntly. But the noise drew her attention as well. For a brief moment, she knew it must be her mother's, but based on the fact that there was no follow-up cry, she shrugged out of the thought. Probably coincidence it sounded like her.

Patience drew in another deep breath.

“We should remain calm,” she said, despite the fact that neither of them were at the point of panicking yet. “And find out who made that. They might need help.”

Once long ago, Patience’s parents told her that they’d get her a new cell phone. Her old one barely functioned and the coverage was so bad that it only worked in a handful of locations. But time passed and money was needed in more important locations so Patience didn’t have the necessary tool to call for help if that person who screamed was bleeding out on the floor or something. She’d have to use her other resources.

Without waiting for the other girl to do anything, Patience pushed through the racks of clothing in the direction in which she believed that the scream came from. As she was walking by, she snagged a sweater by the hanger off one of the outstretched metal limbs.
