• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Brianna clutched at the metal railing, the only sign of the turmoil making it so hard to breath the white knuckle grip she had on that rail. Standing with her back to the crowded room, she stared at a scene from her nightmares.

Beautiful coral behind glass. Shimmering waters flowing out and over her, creating a bubble around the entire room, encasing those inside. Flickers of color where fish darted about, the eerie sinuous movements of an eel behind the sway of seaweed.

She swallowed hard and the muscles in her arm tightened as the ominous shadow of a shark glided across her vision. If she looked up she'd see the beautiful deadly grace of a familiar predator. Not so long ago she'd been trapped in a bubble like this. Trapped in a Games where light was filtered through the false haze of water not there, where predators slid through the air like it was an ocean.

At least there were no giant lizards lurking here.

Brianna had come here as part of a challenge to herself. To prove she was able to overcome her fears. To prove she could be not afraid.

She'd been wrong. It hadn't really hit her until she'd gone through the shark tunnel. It had taken more willpower than she'd been willing to admit to get through that. And it had led here, to this bubble. Memories whispered. Madness tickled at her throat. She couldn't let go of the railing for fear she'd relinquish her control and show the whispering district residents that she was broken.

Even though she was not a more recent victor, she'd been one of the final contestants in the Victor Games which hadn't happened so long ago. She was generally recognized by other residents, who'd been forced to watch the games even if they didn't want to. As Auryon Ward had won those Games, a Victor from Four, it was likely more of Fours residents had paid attention to those Games. Particularly as this was a Career district. They actually LIKED watching the Games in the Career district.

She started to breath a little more easy. Anger. It was a dangerous compromising emotion she'd learned, but it was better than blind panic. She had to get control of herself or she'd be sitting here, latched onto this stupid rail for the rest of the day. She had to get control over herself or she'd never get out of this room and leave the aquarium. Which she desperately now wanted to do. The taste of failure was bitter, she mused unhappily, but she could always try this venture again.

If she survived this episode unscathed.

Her Games had been years ago. She had had years to get over her guilt for killing those four people. She knew that it would have had to happen if she were gonna go home. Even then, Kiva knew that it was going to be, basically, impossible for her to get out of the game without taking someone’s life. Others had done so before her, and she had doubted that they were going to let her get away with it now. She should have been over it by now, 14 years later. Still, she couldn’t still help but feel guilty whenever she visited those Districts. Even now, she got the vague feeling that those from 2, 3, 4 and 8 all disliked her. That didn’t stop the District 6 Victor from visiting those places every once in a while to pay respects to the other young lives she had managed to destroy.

She just hadn’t expected to be rushed and pressed into heading towards the aquarium. She had thought that she had gotten over her real fear of water. After all, it had been years since the room had filled up. It had been years since she felt her lungs fill up with water and her legs kick from up near the roof of the room. It had been years since little black spots appeared before her yes and she had been unable to see anything in front of her. Still, she had been there. Kiva had agreed to go to the aquarium. She had thought that she had gotten over it, and they had told her that the girl she had killed with carbon monoxide had loved working there on her free time. People had wanted her to head there, so she thought that, since she wasn’t actually going to be anywhere near the water, she might have had a chance to do it. When she had first approached, her head had been held high. Her bag hung over her shoulders, and her grip was tightened into an almost death grip. She could have still walked away, but she had walked in.

Staring very firmly at the ground, she made it relatively far. She wasn’t entirely sure when she had heard someone call her name. She wasn’t sure if, perhaps, she had forgotten where she was. All Kiva knew was that she had heard her name. She had looked up, and, almost immediately, regretted doing so. Her hands started shaking. Her throat closed up. And she found herself rooted to her own spot. People passed by her, but she found that she couldn’t even call out to one of them to help her. Little kids passed by her giggling. Whether or not they were giggling at her, she wasn’t entirely sure. All she knew was that she wanted to collapse to her knees and start crying some. Luckily for her, she caught a flash of brunette hair. Kiva definitely knew the five Victors before her and the five behind her, personally. When she caught sight of Brianna, she shakily made her way to her. Focused on her, it was almost like all the water around them wasn’t really there. When her own shaky hands touched the rail, she felt her own sense of relief. “B-Brianna,” she almost rasped. “We need to get out. We need – now – get out.”

One two three...leave.

One two three...leave.

Counting down wasn't working. Maybe she'd just stand here until she starved to death. Hearing her name jolted her, and her hands left the railing. Immediately the room started to spin around her. One hand reached out and clamped back onto the railing so she wouldn't fall, and she paled considerably. Who the hell...

"Kiva."

Kiva. Kiva would looked like she was dazed and about to collapse. Kiva, who wasn't one of the Victors she actively hated. Kiva, who might be as disturbed by the water here as she was.

"Kiva what are you doing here?" She asked, trying to sound in control, even though the world was spinning and she could hear rushing water when there was no such sound.

That was a seriously good question now that she thought about it. What was she doing there? Her games had happened years ago. Any guilt that she had kept and honed and expanded upon over the years should have gone away by now. She should have forgotten about the tributes from District 4 and focus on the lack of tributes that they were able to bring back from her own District. She should have stayed back in good ol’ dry District 6 and paid tributes too all the people that she had lost then. At least, then she wouldn’t be in this type of situation. It would have been unfortunate cause, then, perhaps Brianna would have still been there all alone and on the verge of panicking just like her.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder was a major pain. It was weird to actually chalk up and write down the amount of people that developed paralyzing fears over things they might have once loved. True, Kiva had never been a strong swimmer. She might have never found a love for it, but she hadn’t even had aquaphobia until she had gotten back from her games. While she was fine with small puddles and showers, aquariums like this had been horrible for her in the past. They were horrible for her still. Honestly, she couldn’t think of a very good, logical reason to give her fellow Victor about why she had been there without wanting to shoot herself for.

“I need to get out of here.” She rasped in a quick voice, eyes darting all over the places. Was it her, or was there a crack in the glass not to close to them? The more she looked at it, the bigger it seemed to be. And the walls looked like they were closing in on them. Her chest seemed to be tightening. “Where’s the closest door?”
