• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

The 101-Fall Hunger Games are wrapping up. You have 24-48 hours to enter the final posts. Members can still post in the "History of Sixth Station" and the "Connection" forums.

Uaithne swore that once he got out of the arena the second time, that he’d do more things for himself and less with his eye on the Capitol. Long ago, he used to play an instrument, so perhaps that was why he had managed to pick up the violin now with relative ease. Relative being the key—for it wasn’t easy by any means. But he practiced a fair amount as he was cooped up within his District 5 victor residence. Only now, he felt like he needed to do something else.

Okay, this was stupid, but it didn’t feel stupid. Logically it was stupid. But standing high on the prairie cliffs overlooking the ocean while the sea breeze made the winter wild flowers bob through the grasses at his ankles didn’t feel stupid. And holding the violin in his arm with its body pressed against his neck was just too comfortable to be stupid. And playing the violin for no one but the earth to hear in was exactly the sensation that Uaithne desired. The long notes, hesitant but otherwise clear, sang a song to the earth.

Callum needed away for a little while. He needed the taste of salt on the air and cool fresh breezes to ease his troubles. His recent disagreements with Mr. Theron over a particular art project made him uneasy, and he just wanted to be away from the city, from Peacekeepers, from Careers, from all of the things that made him feel claustrophobic. Trapped. He needed to breathe.

For a moment, walking along the cliffs, he almost felt a little jealous of the citizens who got to live here, who didn't have to take a long trip just to watch the ocean lap at the shore. They could come here and relax, and be home before nightfall. It had to be beautiful. Quickly, however, the boy shook the idea out of his head, and reminded himself that this was no better. After all, all that glittered was not gold, and for all the luster of the sea district, it was still full of Careers and Peacekeepers and everything that drove Callum away from his home for the day.

The teenager sighed and closed his eyes, trying to imagine himself in a movie. There would be the gentle wind, whipping his short hair about, and some music to highlight his mood. He could almost hear it, just the sound of a violin playing on the quiet plains... until he realized he simply wasn't imagining it.

Ahead of him was a guy, whose age he couldn't yet determine from the distance, sitting in the grass as he played a violin. It struck Callum as peculiar, and he decided to continue his approach, walking naturally towards the stranger. He opted not to call out to him yet, and wait until he'd gotten at least a little closer, or until he was noticed.

So mesmerized was Uaithne, so deep in his music that he could only feel the breeze around him.

OoC: Wow, excellent post on my part! Also, Uaithne’s standing. I didn’t write that in the previous post, but I can if needed.

Callum approached the strange person that was playing violin on the cliffside, and listened for a moment. He was behind him, and easily found should he simply turn around, but he decided to enjoy the notes that were being carried away on the breeze. It was beautiful, but he wasn't much one for violin music. He was more so entranced by the magic of it all, the idea of a person playing an instruments on a cliff above the ocean. Very much like a movie.

"That sounds pretty cool, what with the scenery and all," the teenager said, glancing out over the sea then back at him, "Kinda surreal."

Uaithne jumped and fumbled the violin, nearly dropping it to the grasses below. But he managed to recover it at the last moment and cradled it in his arms as he took a step away from the person who had sneaked up on him.

“Wh-ah? I, er, sorry, I didn’t hear you,” he said, heat rising to his face. Now he certainly felt foolish out here. He didn’t expect anyone to come at all. Perhaps he had been stupid to assume that he was alone out of doors, but he couldn’t help but wish he had been. He ran a hand through his white-and-black hair (nearly spearing himself in the eye with his violin bow) and continued, “Are you okay? Sorry.”

Callum nodded and rolled his shoulders, looking at the ocean as he replied, "Perfectly fine. Just escaping District 2 for a little while, it gets sort claustrophobic sometimes," he paused for a moment and smiled, "Besides, you can't really beat this view."

He looked back over at the guy, and looked at him neutrally. Callum stood casually as he watched him, unfazed by the stranger's clumsiness. The teenager could admit he'd was a little startling, just appearing out of nowhere on a windy day. And either way, he was probably here for some of the same reasons he he was, and they always say, great minds think alike.

"So, what's your name? I'm Callum, or Cal if you prefer," the boy continued.

Uaithne frowned when the guy didn’t seem to recognize him. District Two. Did he kill anyone in District Two? No, no, just One. But Paisley—he’d been married to Paisley, the District Two Victor from a few Games ago. Maybe the guy didn’t keep up with the times, or maybe Uaithne had somehow managed to come up with a disguise, like the violin masked who he really was. It was nothing more than an absurd thought, but one that Uaithne found strangely pleasing.

“Er. I’m Uaithne. Nice to meet you, Callum,” he said. He shifted the violin between his hands, holding the instrument from the neck in one hand, and the bow in the other. “And yeah . . . this is one of the best views in Panem.”

If you could get over the fact that the people from this district were batshit insane and tried to kill other children. Then again, this guy was from a Career district as well, so it was unlikely that he was thinking the same way as Uaithne on this subject.

Callum furrowed his brow, "Uaithne... ah right! Sorry, didn't quite recognize you there for a moment. You were the winner for... District 5 I recall, yes?"

In that moment, the teenager became uncomfortable aware of the stigma that came from being from District 2. Most namely, he was seen to be a crazy ax-murderer, which for a lot of the teenagers in his home, wasn't very far off. It bothered him a little to be associated with those, but even so, it's what came with the territory, regardless of his upbringing. He believed in free thinking and independence, and if he went to the Games it would be for a cause that wasn't so-called "honor" or "glory." The idea of killing was something he'd been desensitized to, but if he was going to do it, it'd be for a real cause.

"I'm not going to try and chop off you're head or anything you know," he attempted at a joke to break the ice.

“I . . . don’t think you could,” Uaithne replied. He chewed the inside of his cheek. That really wasn’t supposed to come out that way . . . or really at all. He wasn’t even sure that the kid would take it the way that he meant it, either, which only made it more weird and confusing and now he didn’t even want to think about it. So he quickly added, “District Five. Yeah. 97th Games.”

He should leave if this guy wasn’t. No, even if this guy was going to peace out, Uaithne didn’t want to stay. The serenity of the cliff had been broken, and now he wasn’t going to regain it so easily, at least not today. His violin case rested a few feet to the side, next to a rugged canvas messenger bag that had seen years’ worth of wear.

"Ah, sorry," Callum replied as he rubbed the back of his neck, "A poor taste in joke I guess. I mean I can get out of here if you want. I didn't mean to bug you, I just wanted to get away from some of the losers back home, you know?"

The teenager laced his hands on the back of his neck and offered an awkward smile. He hadn't intended to be an asshole and ruin the Victor's day, and in all honesty he felt a little bad. The dude probably needed the R&R way more than he did in all likelihood. Oh well, he'd do his best to try and salvage the situation the best he could.

“It’s okay, don’t worry about it,” Uaithne replied. He turned out towards the ocean, the sea’s breeze rolling gently over the prairie cliffs. “Can’t deny a sight like this.”
