• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Lizzie had stayed home these Games, considering Four had enough Victors to do the job that really only needed two people (maybe one in some cases) to do. And really, she hadn't really wanted to go to the Capitol again. Four Games a year. It was going to be even harder, if the Quell wasn't enough they were making more kids die a year and more time in the Capitol for the Victors.

Not fair.

But staying home, she still had to do chores and take care of her house at least. Seeing that Finn had a broken arm, which would probably have the cast of just after the Games finished, and with Dawson was busy at work... Lizzie found herself stepping up in being the head of the family. Maybe that's what she considered herself as because it was her house they all lived in, wasn't it? And she was the one who had the most money coming into the family between her and Dawson. She took over as head of the family over a year ago.

Staying home meant she had to shop still. So she had gone to the market and gotten some groceries, just enough for a few days worth of stuff. Lizzie was rather good at shopping the minimal and still having enough to make some sort of good dinner and such. Stew was on the menu tonight for her siblings.

But she stood in the middle of the market, watching the Bloodbath show on the screens that had been set up in the shopping district of the District that lead into larger screens in the District Square. A crowd had formed around her as people stopped to watch the Games.

Merc's mother came to him, he was in his room in bed, reading a book. As she opened the door, he sat up straight and tall, ready for orders. "Mercurius," she said, "can you run to the market for me hun'?" she asked politely. Mercurius instantly got up and slipped on his shoes. He hadn't been out yet today, but was required by his mother to go and "watch the Games" at least once a day just so the Peacekeepers wouldn't get suspicious about what was going on in their house. His mother watching the Games alone, and him.. Doing whatever else he could find. In this case, reading.

He walked over to the door, and his mother handed him a piece of paper. "Of course," he replied to her question. He walked through the hallway, down the stairs, passing up portaits of his small family of two, used to be three, then he saw his jacket hanging on a hook, grabbed it, and walked out of the door. As he closed the door, he slipped on his jacket, and made his way down the street.

As he made his way towards the Town Square, he noticed that the Games were showing the Bloodbath stage, and had been going on for maybe 10 minutes or so. He hadn't missed a lot though. His mother usually made him come see who died during the Games at night, when they showed the anthems of all the Tribute's faces. He walked over to a booth, where there were many people crowding around someone. He knew it had to be a Victor or someone important, the crowd seemed to be asking questions to the person.

When he got a clearer view, he saw it was Elizabeth, who was a Victor, and the sister of a good friends of Mercurius', Finnian. As he approached the booth, he heard shouting "Who do you think is going to win?" they asked. "Do you have a favorite?" they asked. Merc couldn't stand it. He couldn't bear being a Victor, not that he had any chance of winning, but if there was some kind of luck and he did, he needed to hide his face with something so he wouldn't be lunged at with questions that demand answers. The crowd dialed down and turned to see what was going on, because they were missing it trying to talk to Elizabeth. "Hello," he said to her. And he went and stood next to her.

The crowd had been asking questions she really couldn't ask. She hadn't talked to the Tributes, she hadn't even gone to the Capitol with them. It wasn't like she had an idea of how they acted or even if one of them stuck out to her. She knew just as much about the Tributes as everyone else in the Districts. It was better though, the Residences' questions over the Capitolites'. With the Capitol it was a whole other story of how things worked, and it was something she really didn't like.

She looked to the screens as the crowd faded back to watching. Lizzie was holding a bag of groceries over her chest as she watched. A voice made her jump some, when she realized it was directed towards her.

Looking at where the voice came from, it was a boy about Fin's age. And she slightly recognized him. One of Fin's friends. She knew he had visited the house before, but Liz never really bothered her brother much when he had people over. She liked to try to give her siblings space, and she imagined it could be weird to have friends over and your Victor sister just coming in would be the worst thing to happen.

"Hi," she answered with a smile.

Mercurius turned around and looked for some vegetables. He needed to start eating healthier if he was going to ever become a career, let alone a good one. With more Games now, he had more of a chance to get reaped, so he needed to pay more attention to what he does each day. He tries to run at least 2 miles every morning before his mother got up, come home and help her out, and then do whatever else throughout the day.

"I know they have to be annoying." he said. "How can you stand that?" he asked. That was one of the cons of being a Victor. Always having someone in your face asking questions, like you know the answers. Yes, you were a Tribute. Yes, you overcame 23 other children. But you may not even know how you won until they showed it to you. You become a different person in the Arena. A different kind of creature. When you come out, the creature fades away, and you return, into the madness that is Panem.

The District Four boy had just been shown being killed. It was fine. Lizzie hadn't mentored them, but she figured that either Isali, Liana, or Drake had and that was going to be hard on all of them there. There was nothing worse than a grumpy Victor around these times, and that was something Lizzie was glad she got to miss. Maybe she had once thought that being a Victor was something amazing, before she volunteered and went to the Games that was, but now it was something hard and there was no getting away from this life she now had.

"Oh, you get use to it," Lizzie shrugged some. It had been four, almost five, years since she won. You got use to it the longer you had been Victor. You learn to deal and say the right things or just keep quiet. "At first, when you're new things are hard and everyone is overly annoying, but once you've been around for a few years it's easier and you know what to say and do."

Oh, you get used to it. She just said that like Merc could be a future Victor. Or was he just thinking differently than she was? Mercurius wasn't even paying any attention to the screen at the moment. But the expression on the girl's face didn't change. It was almost as if she actually was used to it. Would he be able to do that? Merc would probably faint if he were in the games and saw someone die. He had never witnessed a death at site, just from a screen, but it's way different if you're actually there. "It's a time thing then," he suggested.
