• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Mercurius got out of school, and didn't even go home. He walked down to the coast, and it was a little cold, but he didn't care. He wanted to swim. He was pretty sure that the water wasn't frozen or anything, it still moved. Mercurius really just wanted the chance to get away from life. And spend time alone, as usual. Mercurius' mother says that he needs some friends, but he doesn't think so. At least not as much as she does. Walking around is the perfect opportunity to meet new people. So technically, he was doing what his mother said and was being obedient. Just maybe he'll meet someone, just maybe.

Mercurius slipped off his shirt, and kept on his jeans, and ran quickly into the water. It was very cold, and he shivered back and forth. After his body got used to it, he layed down close to the sand, and let the tide cover him.

Malcolm’s workout today wasn’t at the gym; rather today was his day to run. Sure, he may not have been the fastest runner out there, but he could probably keep a steady pace far longer than those who had the speed. Wanting a change of scenery and some peace, Malcolm chose to go the beach to run instead of the streets of Four like usual. Hardly anyone came to the beach during the winter months, and right now he was glad for it.

With the sound of the waves rolling gently and breaking on the sand to his right, Malcolm blocked out everything but the familiar rhythm of his feet touching the soft ground and his even breathing. A dark spot came into view on the edge of the tide line, but he ignored it until he was close enough to realize it was some kid lying in the surf.

Malcolm slowed his pace then stopped a meter or two away from the kid. His brows quirked up and cocked his head before he shook it, thinking, Kid, you could catch a cold or something doing that. He took a few walking steps before he quickened his pace to a slow jog and began to move past the kid.

Merc jumped as he felt some wind flow past him. He didn't expect it. He sat up quickly, as if to defend himself (not that he could do any damage on the ground), and saw a boy, well, almost a man, running. Curious, he got up, and walked over to his bookbag, and took his towel out, dried himself off, then put his shirt back on, and tried to catch up with the man.

"Hey," he said. Greeting someone never hurts right? Mercurius' desperate need for companions gets the best of him, and he comes off as.. random sometimes you could say.

Once past the kid, Malcolm was back in rhythm. Left, right, left, right. It was easy, relaxing. There was no skill or luck with running, and it came naturally. It was the most enjoyable part of his training. One did have to push oneself further and further to become better, and Malcolm liked pushing himself to his limits in order to see what he could do. Besides, strenuous training wasn’t about staying where you were; it was supposed to help you become better, stronger.

The sounds of the waves rolling up to the shore was dimming in his ears as he regained his focus. Perhaps if he made it to-

“Hey.”

The single word drew him from his thoughts and he glanced over his shoulder to see the kid following him. What did he want? Malcolm slowed to a stop then faced him. Guess he’d have to reply to find out. “Hi.”

Merc was obviously bad at conversating. Of course he hadn't had much of it anyway, but still. He wasn't funny. No jokes came to mind. He just decided to use the situation as the conversation starter. "Do you always run?" He asked. Merc was a little curious, he had a mind of a child, when he meets new people of course.

Did the kid just want to talk? It was somewhat an odd question to start off with, but he guessed it did make some sense seeing as he had been running. “No,” he replied, “not always.”

Malcolm considered the kid. He was just as tall as Malcolm himself, if not taller, but he didn’t have the muscle. He didn’t seem like a career. No career he knew of would just lay there and do nothing. No, Malcolm decided, he was not a career, just a curious and somewhat awkward teenager.

Mercurius had to keep the conversation going. This kid was obviously training, but he was interested in talking with him. Just seeing how it was to train. "I can run with you. Warning you, I'm not as fast. But what's your name?" Mercurius asked.

He wasn't really used to doing this, but he needed to start training. If he were to be reaped, he needed to be ready for any kind of running, fast or slow. One week in the Training Center in the Capitol would do him no good if he had never done it previous. Besides, all the Capitolites expect him to be a Career, so it's about time that he becomes just that. It was time to get serious.

So the kid wanted to join him as he ran. Malcolm didn’t particularly care though. Running with a person may actually be a nice change for all he knew, and he was willing to try it.

Malcolm gave a small indifferent shrug and said, “It’s fine; just be prepared to run for a while. I go for endurance, not speed.” He turned back to his route, motioning with his head for the kid to follow. He then picked up a steady gait not really waiting for the kid, who would catch up if he wanted to keep talking. The pace he set was a tad slower than he was used to, but it wasn’t going to do him any harm.

“Name’s Malcolm,” he tossed over his shoulder. “You?”

Mercurius was excited on the inside that someone agreed to even talk with him. He made sure not to show it though. He wasn't doing this for himself. He was doing this for his mother. He had to train and get stronger if he wanted any chance at winning the Hunger Games, let alone any fights he may encounter.

"Alright," Mercurius said. He began to pick up the boy's pace, and kept up with him. It seemed easy, but the boy could just be running slow just to make Merc feel like he was doing good, and he could speed up at any moment, so Merc was sure to pay attention as they were talking. "Mercurius. Merc for short. Either works for me." he stated.

“Merc then. “

Malcolm fell silent for a few minutes. He kept his pace steady and even, listening to the waves as they rolled in. He’d forgotten how much he liked it out here. It had been a while since he’d been on the beach. He’d not had time to between work and school and training. Perhaps he should make some time to come. Could run less on the streets and more out here. Yes, that was what he would do.

“So,” Malcolm finally spoke up, glancing over at Merc before he turned his attention back in front of him, “what do you do? Besides randomly lying in the surf in the middle of winter.”

Mercurius nodded slightly.

This question was hard to answer. He hated talking about his mom unless it was with someone he truly trusted. Not that this guy wasn't trustworthy, but they just met less than fifteen minutes ago, so it wasn't likely that he'd be telling him his whole life story off the bat. "I assist the fishermen." he stated.

His job was very embarassing. At this age, he should be fishing himself, but no one has taught him. Ever since his dad died, he hasn't had a male figure in his life that could become his role model. He doesn't have any brothers, he doesn't really talk to any cousins or anything. Family reunions aren't his thing.

Malcolm’s brows drew together in slight confusion. “You… assist fishermen. Not a fisherman yourself?”

It was kind of odd. Sure there were people who helped out and didn’t fish themselves, but they weren’t the kid’s age. He ought to know how to fish for himself by now. Then again, his family may not have been in the fishing business, which was a rare thing in Four, but it did still happen, and he was probably just starting out. Someone should be teaching him though, right? Maybe, maybe not.

Malcolm glanced over at Merc. “Do you not know how to? Or..?”

Merc got a little bit nervous. He shook his head. "No one ever taught me. So yes, I don't know how to." he stated. Mercurius wished that his dad was still alive, he could be helping him with this kind of stuff. They could have been best friends, at least that's what Mercurius imagines they were to be. But everything happens for a reason, supposedly. Maybe there was a reason his father died. A reason he was here now. At this moment.

“Well that’s crap. That no one’s teaching you, I mean.”

An idea came to Malcolm. The kid probably did not want to be a fisherman’s aid all his life. No one would. Malcolm could teach him. He was a fisherman himself, after all, and he didn’t see why his father would say no. Another pair of hands could go a long way. The kid- Merc would have to learn a lot, and quickly too. He’d probably end up rotating between the boat and the stall. He’d better be a fast learner, and diligent too. Fishing was not an easy job.

“You want to learn, Merc?”

Mercurius didn't say anything. He had to think. What if he couldn't learn? Merc needed to know this skill before it was too late. Before it was his turn to enter the Arena. What if it so happened that the Arena he was in was surrounded by water, and fish? It would be crucial, especially for a D4 Boy, to know how to fish and identify and clean edible fish.

He was very surprised at the question. And broke his silence. "You'd be willing to teach me?" he asked.
