• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

It’s cold. Winter grasps its frozen fingers around the district square, chilling all who stand out here in the February afternoon. Streamers and banners run from building to building, lamppost to lamppost as the nation celebrates the first Hunger Games of this year. The district residents, bundled in coats and jackets and scarves, pack into the open area and the adjacent roads and alleyways for a glimpse at the dais erected just for this occasion. Televisions displayed throughout the area allow those without a view a chance to see what is happening.

This is the beginning of a new era. From this point forward, Panem celebrates not one Hunger Games each year but four. This, the president had said at his previous address, is a thriving society. This is the future.

The escort and mayor stand up with the district Victors and Champions. The escort beams at the audience while the mayor gives a familiar speech, and then it’s cut to the Capitol—Starla McFee sings the national anthem flawlessly. Then, like normal, the television screens show President Sinclair giving his speech from the Sixth Station, the place where the Hunger Games were first announced all those years ago. He reminds people of their past deeds, and promises a healthy future based upon the bright and vigorous present. The television screens cut back to the reaping platform, and the escort moves forward to the large glass globes that hold the names of all boys and girls aged 12-18. And from one ball, she draws the girl’s name, and from the other, the boy’s; she announces each after she draws it:

Liam Neeson

and

Kendall Seaton

-------------------------------------------------------

OoC: You may now post in this thread to show your characters’ reaction to the reaping. Because all characters must be present in their own district, please only post here if your character belongs in this district or is the district escort. However, any district resident of this district may post: the new tributes, other teenagers, district residents of all ages, victors, etc.

If your character was chosen to be a Tribute, congratulations. He or she will be lead off to the Justice Building and cannot escape. At the Justice Building, a handful of family and friends can come in one or two at a time to wish your character good bye. If you wish to RP this, please make a separate thread in the District Square. Otherwise you may post at the training center.

Today was the day. Aurora could feel it in her bones from the moment she woke up to go on her morning swim, extra early because today was Reaping day and she had to make sure to be home to get dressed for the ceremony. Even the freezing cold water couldn't calm her excitement, though she tried her best to tire herself out with her workout so she wouldn't be visibly jittery for the cameras. It didn't help, but at least it allowed her to calm down enough to appropriately apply her makeup and fix her hair without messing anything up.

Her dress this year was extra-special. This was her year, and she wanted to look good. The Sponsors would be watching and she needed to be able to give them a good show. She couldn't help but stroke the soft, silky fabric with her thumb as she waited in line with all the other girls from District Four, and focusing on the texture helped her calm down enough to stand straight and steady in the cold while the opening video played. Normally she didn't care much about it one way or another, but today it made her want to scream with impatience. Finally, the announcement was made, some poor sap was called, and Aurora got to look heroic as she volunteered and strode forward onto the stage, her excitement settling into a bloom of contentment that allowed her to smile and wave at the cameras charmingly.

Lia couldn't remember the last time her prep team had shown up so early for a Reaping. It was still dark outside when they barged into her house, sing-songing about how lazy she was and ripping her out of bed. It wasn't bad enough that they had twice made the trip to her house while she was supposed to be on break from stupid Capitol events, but now there was a new tradition--four Games a year, because nobody was satisfied with a 23-kids-a-year murder rate. Let's quadruple it.

Though Lia was convinced there was something else afoot. Her prep team hadn't been this annoying and this persistent in years. She had had an iron hold on them for a decade, and now, suddenly, they didn't care about her protests. They had their 'orders,' as they always said, and therefore, so did she.

She wondered exactly what those orders were, besides to make her as miserable as possible.

They did that exceptionally well to begin with. It was hours she spent in their clutches this time, as if they hadn't just seen her a few weeks ago; somehow, she had become horrifically unkempt in that short period of time, to their utter despair, and it took all morning to 'fix' her. By the time they shoved her out the door for the Reaping, her jaw ached from having been clenched for hours, and she was preoccupied trying to stretch out two fingers she was pretty sure Nyx had jammed in swatting her hands away as she tried to keep their strange torture devices away from her face.

And she was freezing on top of it all, because 'coats are out, capes are in,' and capes should never be closed in front, only draped uselessly over one's shoulders. For that, she purposely tried to slip on every frozen puddle she saw on their trek to the District Square, just to try and ruin the outfit they'd forced her into, to no avail; those damn boots had more traction than she had thought.

At least she got to sit onstage; it wasn't even a perk, just a mercy, because the damn ceremony felt longer than ever, perhaps because of the cold ('no capes onstage, no one will be able to see your outfit!') or perhaps because it felt like the thousandth time she had sat through it in a year. It had only been a year ago that she'd been waiting nervously to see if her district hated her enough to have voted her into their Victor Games; turns out, they had picked themselves a winner. And now, they were rewarded for their choices with four more chances to win every year! They were so lucky.

It was boring as usual onstage; she sat, and scowled, despite having been coached to smile the entire way here, and then the names were called, a volunteer came forward--oh, big surprise, nobody had ever volunteered before, right?--and then it was over. Far too long, but infinitely shorter than the hellish hours it had taken to prepare for the thing.

Lia stalked off the stage, and as she passed her prep team, Drasteia held out the stupid cape. Lia snatched it from her and tossed it on the ground, stepping on it as she walked over a frozen puddle on her way to the train, along with everyone else doomed to spend the next few weeks in the Capitol.

Isali was annoyed. Annoyed that the fact that the Quell wasn't enough that now there were four chances a year for stupid little careers could run out and think they could win. More death. So much more death. And it all wasn't fair - the fact that twenty-four kids a year wasn't enough to that they had to make it ninety-six with only four of those actually ever winning. And not only that, there'd be so many more Victors a year and more time being forced to stay in the Capitol. Everything was just going down hill and she hadn't even been a Champion for a year!

Her prep team somehow got into her house and it was by their luck only that they caught Isali eating breakfast instead of making it or there might have been the chance one of them would have been stabbed. The worst part of her prep team was that they didn't even let her finish eating her food. The annoying high pitched cutesy voiced they used with her only got more high pitched when they spotted her cat trying to charm the pants off of the prep team for a treat.

The prep team spent probably hours working on her. And Isali spent almost the whole time grumbling and trying to wiggle out of their grip. Really, it wasn't something she had signed up for. And after it was all done, she looked nothing like they would dress her in the Capitol. "It's District Chic!" they called it. Of course, Isali didn't buy any of it and probably just thought they were lazy and really bad at dressing for cold weather. Isali wouldn't count the top they put her in as a top any less than the jacket they gave her a as jacket. Neither of those things kept much of the cold out.

Grumbling as they flitted with her outfit as she walked to the Square, she sat on the stage and watched the Reaping. A year ago it had been Ula who went. A year ago she had had the chance to volunteer and she hadn't taken it. A year ago she lost her cousin and it was her fault. A year. That was both a short and a long time.

A volunteer and a none. Great. As soon as it was over, Isali stalked off stage after the other Victors. Another Games meant more annoying Tributes. How fun.

Lizzie had spent most of the morning locking every window and door, trying to prepare for keeping her Prep Team out. For the most part, it worked expect at one point they got really close to coming in and she decided last minute to mimic her sister's voice and call out that: "Lizzie isn't here! She's actually with her husband! Go try there!" Which to her surprise worked. It was almost funny because for all that the Capitol knew they were happily married, right? But at least it kept her prep team away.

And that left Lizzie alone to get ready, which was probably better then what she expected happened to the other Victors. It was fine though, because she got to do whatever she wanted now.

She pulled her hair into a simple ponytail and really didn't do anything else in hair and makeup. And all she did for clothing was be warm. She pulled on warm pants and some boots, a knit sweater and a big coat. Warm. She'll probably be one of the warmest there. She smiled as she walked to the Reaping, because she wasn't cold at all.

Sitting on the stage, she gazed off into space for most of the time, not really paying attention to anything going on for the speeches and such because they were the same boring ones every year. And then the names were called. A volunteer and not her brother. Great. But Lizzie recognized the volunteer some, the girl she met on the beach. She shrugged it off, didn't matter to her. Her brother was safe and she was staying home these Games.

Malcolm got up that morning unfazed by the fact that today was Reaping day. Sure he was a bit nervous but if he was reaped then he would be proud to go, and if he wasn’t, well, he wasn’t. And this wasn’t going to be only Games this year, so there were other chances of going.

He dressed in his finest of course, and left his parents with a confident smile once they reached the square. He stood with the others, his shoulders squared and his head high, despite the fact that his stomach fluttered. The speech was boring like usual, but that was to be expected. At last the names were called, the boy he knew by sight, but the girl he knew nothing about. And then someone called out. A volunteer. Of course. He was just glad it hadn’t been his name that was called.

It was Reaping day once more. Jenner was already dressed even before the prep team even stepped through his door. He managed to shoo them away and firmly closed his door behind them. He wasn’t overly thrilled with the fact that there were now going to be four, yes four, Games every year now. But it wasn’t like there was anything to be done about it. They just had to sit back and watch now, just like they’d always done.

Jenner was sitting on stage, next to his fellow Victors. Not a single one looked too happy to be there, then again, he wasn’t too happy either. The names were called, some girl volunteered, and that was that. The moment they could, the Victors had abandoned the hated stage, himself included.

Today was the last reaping that Kendall had to volunteer. Sure the President had announced the change in the Games and that would be explained later on, but Kendall would be nineteen in two months. He could either go up to that reaping today and be picked or he could Volunteer, either way he was going into that Game. He was going into that Game today. It was his time.

He took no time getting ready when he headed down to the reaping. The mayor talked. The escort talked. Everyone talked and then there was the girls name called and then someone stepped forward and volunteered. Easy bait, Kendall thought to himself. He glared at the ground waiting for the boys name to be read, hoping it was his name.

"Kendall Seaton" the escort yelled into the microphone. Kendall did not glare he did not smirk. He looked forward and not backwards as he made his way up to join them on stage. It was time. Time to take revenge on his parents for all of these years. Time to show them who controlled his life.

Time for him to die.

Drake stared at the new recruits critically. The volunteer had promise. She was showing more enthusiasm than the boy anyway. Then again, that could be an act.

There would be plenty of time to learn that later.

The other Victors were less satisfactory than the tributes. Fidgetting. Showing their emotions too clearly. Bunch of spoiled brats. Even Isali, although she was at least young enough that was an excuse. Of sorts.

He'd talk to her about it later. For now, it was time to strategize. He grumbled and waved off his avoxes trying to help him as he followed the rules, and followed the others off the stage as the ceremony ended.
