Maddox's parents had given him the day off today, despite the fact that he had said he wanted to work. Working made him feel...normal. Like all the things that he'd discovered lately didn't really happen, and he could just pretend he didn't know it all. Not that it was really life-altering information, not when his brother wasn't around to get to know...but it certainly gave him a lot to think about. Work took his mind off it, though apparently, his parents didn't quite get that. Or else they thought he deserved some fun. He wasn't really sure, but they'd taken his work gloves and handed him money for bus fare, and told him he had to be back by curfew.

He supposed it was nice they trusted him so much--but Madd had never given anybody reason not to trust him. But he was still a little glum, left alone with his thoughts as he walked to the bus stop. That is, until he started watching the trees whizz by as the bus rumbled in towards the less rural districts. He started to get excited, then--he loved exploring new places, and even with everything weighing on his mind, he still couldn't help the excitement that came with the possibility of adventures in other districts. His feet started tapping of their own accord; where would he go? What would he do? He had a whole day--he could go pretty far. Maybe to Five, to see the garden. Or even as far as Four, for the beach. Or maybe to Three, to see their new Victor's home district. Maybe there would be celebrations there--that would be exciting, actually.

But Madd never made it as far as all that. As soon as the bus made its first stop on the edge of District Nine, he was done sitting still, and he bounded off the vehicle on impulse. Sure, Nine wasn't all that far away or exotic, but he actually hadn't spent much time here, despite the fact that it was only one district away. He turned his feet towards the center of town, wandering around and listening to the vague hum of machinery that seemed to come up from the ground, as if the whole district was one giant machine that was constantly running.

Madd strayed down a side street off the square and lo and behold! He stumbled upon a small market, handmade stalls full of homemade goods: textiles and soaps and medicines and little toy trinkets. Maddox grinned at the people running the stalls, even if some of them didn't smile back, and started perusing a stand full of various herbs and pouches of seeds, wondering what they were for.

Surie had left the house, she needed too go down to the marked to see if she could find some fabrics, maybe they had fresh chicken there today? maybe she'd suprise Zane or her parents with a homemade dish? Maybe? She continued down towards the marked and as she got there she stopped next to a stall that held fabrics. "How much for a meter of that one?" She asked pointing too a neautral colored one. The lady looked at her before brushing her off as if she didn't consider her as a paying costumer. Surie rolled her eyes, if that was how the woman was going to be than be it! She'd get on just fine without that fabric, besides other people sold fabrics too!

She walked down the marked while looking on a old photo, of a little girl, that was wearing a neautral colored dress, a dress she would love too have remade just incase there was to be a baby in theire family again. The baby would deserve a nice dress like that! She continued down the marked untill she stumbled onto a boy, he seemed too be around 15 or 16 she thought. "I'm so sorry, i didn't watch where I was going" She appologized, she placed the photo in her pocket parts of it still sticking up.

She hadn't seen that boy in disritct nine before, maybe he was just visiting family or something? SHe didn't know and wasn't planing on asking about that. "You see thoose seeeds there," She asked him and pointed at some of them. "if you place them into the earth and water them a big flower will grow up, It might even become taller then you" She said with a smile at him. " Its a Sunflower and if you threat it correctly it can grow too be 4 meters tall" Surie said explaining slightly, it was nearly as if she could see the information about it, just because of her photographic memory. It was good at times but at other times it was a pain. But maybe her telling him that made him more interrested in the seeds or something? Or on the other side she was just boring him. She gave him a polite smile as she waitited for him to say something.

She still remembered the time her sister had tried too get one too grow, it hadn't worked, her sister allways forgot to water it! But Surie had seen reall sunflowers in one of the other districts, it had been like walking in a special world where the flowers was taller then you! She still remembered the smells the feeling, just like she was in Alice in wonderland.

Maddox was still trying to figure out what all the herbs and seeds and things were for, but the old woman on the other side of the stall wasn't as chatty as Madd was. Every question he asked her was answered with a glare and a grunt, and finally, he got the idea she wanted him to either buy something or go away. Since he didn't need any plants or whatever, he backed up to leave--and slammed right into someone.

He stumbled a bit and windmilled his arms, but he managed to stay on his feet--which was a feat in and of itself for Madd. He tripped and fell at least once a day, if not more; he was lucky it was only the one person he had bumped into and not a whole bunch or a person carrying something really important or expensive.

"No, no, it's okay," he said with a grin. "My fault."

He glanced back at the stand he had just been trying to leave, moving closer to peer at the seeds she was indicating. "How come it's called a sunflower?" he asked curiously. He had been to Five before, but he wasn't any good at knowing the names of the flowers; it was fairly useless information, he thought, as flowers didn't really do much for the residents of the other districts, but they were still cool and interesting. He arched his eyebrows when she said how tall it could grow.

"How do you know about flowers?" he asked. "Are you from Five or from here?"

"How come it's called a sunflower?", it was nice too see that the boy seemed interrested in hearing about the sunflowers, atleast she hadn't bored him away yet, she smiled at him before answering his question. The sunflower is named after its huge, fiery blooms, whose shape and image is often used to depict the sun. She looked at the seeds again, before she focused at the boy and his questions again. "How do you know about flowers?" he asked. "Are you from Five or from here?"

She wasn't sure about how much she wanted too let the boy know about herself, but decided too tell him parts of the truth. "I remember things easily, and No i'm not from five, I'm from nine, thought id love too go to five again and watch the big flowers" She said giving him smile. "your not from here, what district are you from?" She asked the boy trying too learn more about him. What made a boy want to come too nine? What was he doing at the marked? She shaked her head slightly to get her hair out of her face, before she bit her lips.

It would be fun to plant one of the seeds and watch the flower grow but, Surie didn't have green fingers and the flower would probably die, after a week! She'd forget to water it or something. Biting on her lips again she looked at the boy waiting for him too give her some kind of answer.

Madd grinned at the girl. "That's cool," he said, eyeing the sunflower seeds again. Maybe he could use stuff like that...he bet his mom would really like that, tall flowers that looked like the sun. That seemed right up her alley...and he really should find a way to be nice to his parents...they were letting him have all this time off...and before that, with everything he had wanted to do...well, they'd been very understanding. A lot of people might not have been, not when Maddox was as curious as he was, and not considering the circumstances.

He was distracted, though, when the girl said she was from Nine and that she was good at remembering things. "Good how?" he asked as he eyed her. He guessed she did look like she was from Nine, or a lower district, at least. The upper district people wore fancier clothes, even just in Five, and she just had on jeans...and...was that something sticking out of her pocket? He frowned, curious, but she was asking him questions...

"I'm from Ten," he said. "And I came because I couldn't sit on the bus any longer, so I thought I'd explore here. And then I found this market...what's that?" he asked, pointing at the paper sticking out of her pocket.

"good how?" Surie wasn't sure about how she should exlain it, or if she even should explain it. "uhm, its kind of like I remember what i read like if im just looking at a photo of it" Surie finally said after thinking about how she was going to word it correctly. She didn't want to sound like a freak either. Cause she wasn't a freak, just a normal girl. And she'd like to remain that way.

I'm from Ten," Surie smiled hearing what he was saying, "And I came because I couldn't sit on the bus any longer, so I thought I'd explore here. And then I found this market...what's that?" he seemed like a boy who couldn't sit still for so long. It didn't take too long to get from ten to nine, She bit her lips before looking at what he asked about. "oh its a old photo, of a dress id like to make," Surie said with a smile over at him, before looking over at him again. She took the photo up too show it to him.

"That's cool!" Maddox exclaimed, fascinated with the idea of looking at something and being able to remember it. School would be so easy, then...he wouldn't have to work half as hard! And he could memorize the numbers of all the cows and know them instantly without having to check their tags. How awesome would that be, to never have to chase an angry cow's ear around again?

"Can you do it with everything?" he asked curiously. "Like...like...this," he picked up a sachet of herbs from the stand. "Just borrowing," he assured the old woman who was selling things, but she didn't even seem to acknowledge him. He turned the satchel over, where the instructions and the ingredients were printed neatly in what looked like the old lady's own handwriting, or perhaps a young granddaughter's. "Can you look at this and then remember what it says?"

He glanced at the photo she showed him; it was a baby wearing some kind of dress. Madd took it from her to examine more closely, but he didn't see anything all that exciting about it. It was a baby. And a dress. Maddox wasn't exactly interested in either thing. He clutched the odd photo in one hand and held out the sachet to the girl in the other; he was far more interested, at the moment, in seeing whether she could recite all the printed material back to him once he pulled it away from view.

Surie looked at the herbs he was holding up, it wasn't a photo at the note, just some handwriting. Judging on the writing it looked like it was written by a rather unsteady hand probably the old lady's writing. She watched him looking at the photo, as she looked at the package. She let the boy held her photo and watched him hide the package with the writing on.

Taking a deep breath, she concentraded on recalling what was listed on the package. "A rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species. They form a group of erect shrubs, and climbing or trailing plants, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles." She said with a soft smile, before she added. "it also said something about how to make perfume and what kind of medisine its used in" She looked over at him.

She turned her attention to the old lady. "I need some seeds that can be used for cooking, and some seeds for Chives" Surie said looking at the old lady who still didn't seem too take any notice of them.

Maddox let her stare at the sachet for a few moments, then hastily turned it over and put both his hands behind his back, grinning at her. His eyes slowly widened as she recited, word for word, the description on the back of the sachet. He pulled it out from behind him and glanced at it, trying to recall the words she had just said--but they were printed right there on the sachet.

That was awesome!

"Whoa, that's so cool!" he said, more than a little awed at her amazing memory. "How'd you learn to do that? Or does it just happen?"

Madd's imagination was already running wild--why stop at memorizing the names of cows and studying for school? With a magical memory like that, he could learn everything ever about weapons and plants and animals and go to the Games and absolutely demolish everyone. He shook that thought from his head hastily; the Games were rather a touchy subject at home lately, and in all honesty, Madd had never wanted to go. It was just so tempting to imagine what one could do with powers like that--if he could do that and he'd been born in the Capitol, he could have been president by now! And maybe stopped the Games, instead of just winning them--that was a better idea, he thought, nodding to himself.

He stared down at the photo in his hands, of the dress the girl wanted to make, as she talked to the old lady about some seeds she wanted. Though he knew it was wrong, his fingers suddenly twitched, despite the photo already being in his hands. He wanted it--not because he wanted a picture of a baby in a dress, mind you, but because he needed it. It was a reminder of the girl with the amazing memory powers. A connection to her, even if they never met again. He had to keep it.

Before she turned around, he stuck it hastily in his back pocket, making sure to tuck in all the corners so she wouldn't see it hanging out of his pocket the way he'd seen it hanging out of hers. She had the magic memory, he reasoned; she would remember what the dress looked like.

"What are those for?" he asked, nodding to the seeds she had asked for.

Surie looked at the boy and smiled at him. "ive had it like this for as lomg as i can remember, you can train your brain to remember things but, that takes timemandmloads off work." she answered him to answer his first question. Truth said she hadn't been thinking a lot about how it was too remember things like that. So the questions was really good. Biting her lips shebtried to think off an better explination, but right now she couldn't remember any of it.

"the seeds are to be planted in the earth, so they can grow and we can use them for food, to add taste into different food types such ss Stuff" she said with a soft smile, personaly shemnevernate stuff without that in it, as without the seeds it didn't have a taste. She ran a hand through her har before she looked at the boy. " you should try it if you havent had it before" she added still smiling over at him.

Surie looked at him,he had to have a name, but she had no clue at all. "im Surie, whats yours name? What do you domin district 10?" she added looking over at him with a soft smile on her face.

Maddox nodded, a bit disappointed. So he might not ever have a memory as good as this girl--even with training, he bet it wouldn't work as well as hers. Still, he was pretty sure he was going to go home and find a book about memory and tactics to improve it. Next time he had a test at school, he was going to get a hundred, for sure.

He vaguely listened to her talk about the seeds and the things she grew and what they were used for, nodding along politely, but he was really trying to watch her and see if perhaps she had noticed he hadn't given her photo back. Was he going to have to get out of this situation or could they keep on talking? He certainly didn't want to run away--this girl was interesting, with her cool memory and her knowledge of plants, despite being from Nine. He didn't want to have to run off from her so soon.

Luckily, she didn't say anything about it, and relief started to spread through him, as well as a certain sense of satisfaction. It was always nice when he got away with it cleanly--not that he had gotten away with it yet, but it certainly felt a bit less tense than a moment before.

"Oh, sorry!" he said when he realized he hadn't introduced himself. He dropped the sachet down on the stand where he had picked it up and stuck out his hand. "I'm Maddox, nice to meet you, Surie."

He grinned when she asked about Ten; not a lot of people asked, they just assumed he worked with animals. Which, granted, he did. It was just nice to be asked. "My parents own a farm," he explained. "And I work for them when I'm not in school. We have cows mostly, but we've got some chickens and goats, too, and a couple of cats that are kind of ours, but kind of the neighbors. We share them."

Surie smiled at Maddox. how cool, his first name was the same as Zane's last name. "its nice too meet you Maddox" She said with a smile to him and shaked his hand. It was nice meeting new people, the old lady handed her some seeds and she handed her some money for them, before she placed them into her bag.

"oh, but living on a farm sounds like loads off fun, with cows and different kinds of animals" Surie said with a smile over at him. She ran her hand through her hair before she bit her lips. "So you said you liked to go around exploring things, have you been in all the districts or do you just like go where you feel like going?" She asked him with a soft smile.

She looked at the old lady again who seemed like she was becoming slightly irritated about the fact that they were standing infront of her table talking.. She signed for Maddox too follow her. "We don't need her or the peacekeepers on our backs" She added whispering slightly. Mostly because she'd probably loose her mind if there was blood spilled around her or anywhere near her. Cutting her fingers while cooking was nearly a disaster, unless people was around her and could deal with it in a hurry.

"Is your farm big?"

"Nice to meet you, too," Madd said with a grin, shoving his hands in his pockets. She had her seeds now, but she seemed inclined to hang around. He didn't mind--that was the most fun part about exploring the other districts: meeting new people. Madd liked people in general, and he liked talking, and he liked hearing people talk, so it was pretty rare for him to meet a stranger; they were friends nearly as soon as they started talking, typically.

"I've been to all the districts, actually," he said, a bit sheepish about that. He was afforded a lot of things in life that other people weren't, and it was a pretty big feat to be able to say he had been to all eleven other districts. It had taken him a whole year--he had just recently capped off his achievement by visiting One, which had been...just bizarre, in his opinion. But the bus fare and the time off work...it was something a lot of people couldn't afford, especially in the rural and industrial districts, and it was a bit embarrassing, he supposed, to admit he'd done it. Still, there was some pride in having seen nearly the whole country.

He walked away with her when the old woman seemed to tire of them hanging around her stall. "I go where I want," he answered her. "It largely depends on time and what I have to get done and if I can pair up traveling with doing errands for my parents, but mostly, I just go where I like. Four is pretty cool, actually, and so is Seven. But I haven't spent much time in Nine, so here I am."

He grinned when she asked if the farm was big. It wasn't enormous--nothing like the massive farms owned by multiple families and things like that. It was modest; enough to keep the family financially secure, to make sure they lived comfortably if not luxuriously. "I dunno, I guess it depends what you mean by 'big,'" he said. "It's...medium-sized, I guess, by standards in Ten. Maybe even small...but not like, minuscule. My parents and I and a handful of workers manage it well enough, anyway."

He eyed her curiously. "What do you do?" he asked her. "Go to school? Or...something else?" He couldn't quite tell how old she was, and he didn't want to guess--even Madd, who was not exactly smooth, knew that was a bad idea with girls.

He had been too all of the districts? Wow, Surie would never dare to go too all of the districts, so far she had only been in district four only cause her parents wanted her to come with them, so she could explore the disrticts while they did theire busines. So they had sent her out with the son of the man they were doing busnies with he had taken her too see the sea. She had also been to district ten once or twice. She had been on her way to district eight once but her mother had needed her help with something else. Surie had been so happy that she didn't get to go to eight as walking from district to district scared her!

"wow, impressive." Surie said with a smile over at him. He seemed like a brave little boy, okay so he might not be little but in her eyes he was.. He was younger then her, meaning he was little. After all you were not a grown up untill you started too drink coffe, or atleast thats what her father used to say. He had used too say that when she was a little girl, but when she turned five or so he had started to drink coffee. She shaked her head slightly at the thoughts of that. "you are brave, I would never dare to walk around from district to district," she said before biting on her lips taking a smal break. "i'm to much of a whimp" she added with a small shrugg with her shoulders.

"i'm sure your farm is big enough," she added with a soft smile over at him. His farm seemed really nice, not too big and not to small, with animals, what else would one need to run a nice farm? She wondered, people to work there sure. "So you guys like produce your own milk, and such and sell it to other people? Do you guys sell more things or just food ?" she asked, it was interresting hearing about his life and the farm.

Surie shrugged her shoulders slightly. "I dance, and I kind of try to study to become a teacher, but i don't know" She said with a soft smile. She loved too dance, and she loved to spend time with children. But she wasn't sure if she could manage too be strict enough to keep a school class in order.

Maddox laughed when she said he was brave. He didn't think of himself as brave--he was simply curious, that was all, and he was lucky enough to have a way to feed that curiosity. "It's some walking, I guess," he said. "But I don't mind. And once you get far enough, you can pick the bus up--I mostly take the bus, especially once I'm in around here. It's just easier, and then I can spend more time seeing things and less time traveling."

Her questions about the farm pleased him, if only because most people from upper districts didn't really find what he did interesting or worthwhile. Surie was from Nine, though, so she seemed to value work a little more than some of the people he had met in the upper, wealthier districts. "Yeah, we produce our own milk and some eggs, and we sell some of it at the market, but the biggest thing is selling the cows to the slaughterhouse. Meat is kind of our bread and butter, if that makes sense. But it's nice, because we don't have to buy our stuff at market, we get most of it fresh from our own farm."

He grinned at her mention of dancing and teaching--two things he was sure he would never be good at. Maddox was far too clumsy to be a dancer. "Teach like, at school?" he asked curiously. "Or teach dance? I could never do that--that's so cool. How long have you been dancing?"
