• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

After four years, we have decided to close down Sixth Station. The site has meant so much to many of us who spent countless hours into our game. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our game.

The 101-Fall Hunger Games are wrapping up. You have 24-48 hours to enter the final posts. Members can still post in the "History of Sixth Station" and the "Connection" forums.

*from Open Ground*

Uaithne first went downstream, following the water, until he came across a bridge. At the bridge, he crossed the river and ended up on the other side which was nearly identical to the first. His body was weary and he was exhausted; despite the long rest by the river's bank and the nourishment of food, his brain and body did not have the sleep necessary to fully recuperate. The lack of sleep could mean his downfall, and he knew he needed to find somewhere safe to lay down so he would be able to function.

East, always east. He didn't bother veering off in any other direction lest he start wandering in circles and end up at the river again. While he needed the water, he needed the rest more. Besides, he had plenty of water for Lilly and him to last for awhile, at least until she woke and they could get back to the river again. He didn't think he'd be able to carry her any more even though she barely weighed anything.

At last he came to what looked to be the edge of the arena. But within this edge were a line of folds in the wall. Caves. Shelter, and a place to rest where he would be hidden.

"Almost there, Lilly," he said. The first words he had heard aloud since his conversation with Ambrose earlier today, and the way they echoed in the arena sounded slightly creepy. He hugged his sister closer to him, adjusted her weight, and continued into the sanctuary of the caves.

Of course, mysterious darkness may not be sanctuary at all, but he'd take his chances. Chances. That's what the arena was. All a giant game of chance. Was the fish he ate toxic? He had to take the chance and eat it lest he starve. Was this direction safe? Only one way to find out. Could he trust this dark cave? He'd have to take the chance.

Stepping into the cave, Uaithne let his eyes adjust to the darkness. It was warm, though not the same searing hotness as the rest of the arena. After a few moments, he slipped inside, careful to keep alert in case he wasn't alone here. But as the moments passed, he knew that he was alone. We're safe, Lilly. For the time being, we're safe. He proceeded forward into a small crevice in the wall. He lay Lilly down and adjusted her hair so that it wasn't in her face. He pulled off the morning star from his belt, but kept it in his hand. Weary, exhausted, and lacking ability to move, he curled up next to his sister.

"Goodnight, Lilly," he mumbled as his eyes closed and he fell into a deep sleep.

Uaithne woke up thirsty, hungry and disoriented, but well rested. His body ached, and the hand which gripped the morning star suffered cramps. But he opened his eyes and stretched out his body, trying to work out the kinks from sleeping on rock. Beside him Lilly slept peacefully. Foggy brained, he watched her for a few moments before realizing that she wasn't breathing. He shot up into a sitting position and shook her shoulder.

"Lilly?" he asked, panic seizing him. He tried to regain control of himself, but his sister wasn't breathing! "Lilly!"

Why wasn't she breathing?!?

Fear worked into his brain, and he pulled himself to his knees. He reached out two shaky fingers and pressed them against her neck and, upon feeling no pulse, he plugged her nose, tilted her chin up, and began administering CPR. Switching between mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions, he tried to get Lilly to breathe again.

Wait.

Wait.

Uaithne fell back against the rock wall of the cavern. His shoulder bumped against a rock, but he could barely feel the pain as he remembered...

Lilly's dead.

Shivering, he pulled his knees to his chest and wrapped an arm around his legs. With the other hand, he brushed his sweaty hair off of his forehead.

Dead.

Tears formed in his eyes, and before he could brush them away, they trickled down his cheeks. They were warm against his skin, and, more importantly, they somehow made this thing more real. The Games, the death, his sister lying next to him. He couldn't control himself. The tears grew, droplets of water leaking through the dam and weakening the wall. He began to sob. Didn't matter that he was on national television or that he may lose sponsors by showing weakness. He was human, and he couldn't control this human emotion of sadness that overwhelmed him. It was all he could do to keep the sound from echoing through the arena.

Uaithne sat with Lilly for several hours. The tears had dried up on his cheeks and left stains on his dirty skin. He huddled in a ball next to his sister with his back against the wall and his knees to his chest.

But this was the Hunger Games. He couldn't stay here in one spot for too long lest the Gamemakers get bored. Even though he wasn't done mourning his sister, he knew he had to move on in the arena. He couldn't remember how exactly she died, only that she did; he knew that he had carried her into the cave, but from where, he didn't know. He shifted his position slightly so that he could reach over and brush her hair behind her ear. His fingers ran through her locks as he thought about his next move. Lilly wouldn't keep long in the arena. He winced at the thought, hating himself for comparing her to a slab of meat. But it was true. The arena was so warm that things were bound to get very unpleasant from here. Yet the idea of giving her over to the ones who killed her infuriated him.

"Lilly. . . ." he whispered, hoping she'd answer and afraid that maybe she would.

He would have to let her go.

Uaithne took a sip of his water in the hopes it would help him clear his head. He wiped his nose on the sleeve of his shirt and took a deep, shaky breath. His Lilly was dead, and taking the time to mourn her would only mean his death as well. As much as he hated that the Gamemakers took her away from him and wouldn't allow him a decent mourning period, he needed to keep moving. Get some more food. But he couldn't allow his sister to just disappear up in a hover craft.... He wanted to bury her, but the ground was too thin and hard; he would wear himself out trying to dig a hole even an inch deep. He tucked away his supplies.

Pulling Lilly into his arms, he held her close to his chest. Peeking around the exit, he slipped out into the open area and made his way towards the river. If he couldn't bury her in dirt, then he would bury her in water. He headed out to the river and waded into the depths, being careful not to go too far in case the current decided to sweep him down stream. He half-carried, half-floated Lilly for a moment before leaning down and kissing her forehead.

"Goodbye," he whispered before releasing his hold on her. The current took her away from him, and Uaithne turned around. He couldn't watch. As he climbed out of the water and headed against the river, he he heard the sound of a hovercraft descending into the arena.

Uaithne wandered up and down the river bank. First going one way, and then going another. He drank as much water as he could handle and was fortunate enough to grab a fish. Night came, and he went back to the cave, slept, and returned to the water. When he knew he had to do something other than stare into the waves and wonder if he would ever see his little sister again, he pressed onward.
