• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Hal was getting an easier time of settling in now. He had forgotten how hard it was to raise a child on his own, let alone two children. It was painful to look at them and see Abby in their eyes and smiles. But there was the lack of sleep, the sporadic hours, the constant stressor of taking care of a miniature human - two of them. At least the avox, Taylor they had started to call her, had figured it out easily enough. He suspected from how she acted around the children that she was perhaps a mother or someone who had had to help take care of children at home... Maybe someone who was a nanny or babysat very little ones a lot.

Now, though, Holly and Hawthorne were older - nearly seven months old at this point, actually. It would be years before it got easier - truly easier. They were just easier to take care of. It was easier to see their patterns - to figure out how to work this out between him and Taylor and the help that Pepper usually offered.

Right now, though, Taylor was watching over them as they dozed away and Hal was taking a break in the front room, starting in on his music as he did so with Dice dozing over on the couch.

Michael had been sitting on the porch for awhile before he heard it. Music from within. His hands clenched into fists. Why was he here? He'd given up on being friendly. On being nice. On letting others in and barging into the lives of others. Hadn't he? But boredom and forcing to share his domain with another had him turning to wandering. Maybe it was habit that led him to the Victors Village. His hair was a disheveled mess, his jeans and baggy button up shirt rumpled and stained. He was in no condition for visiting, even if he was painfully sober at the moment. But then, even sober life started to feel...wishy washy. Walking felt like swimming. Breathing felt like drowning.

Why here? Why Hal?

Hal had children.

A challenge, he told himself as he stretched and then stood. What kind of a challenge he didn't know. Sometimes his thoughts were so random now...he paused before knocking on the door. Instead, with a grimace, he started to make his way around the house. Testing windows on the way, he made his way to where he hoped a backdoor would be. Maybe that would be unlocked.

He didn't feel like knocking today. Breaking in seemed much more fun. Of course he was making enough noise that if Hal were paying attention he'd probably come investigate. If he weren't paying attention, well, maybe he deserved the surprise.

Hal was strumming away on the mandolin when he heard something rattling off against the glass windows once... twice... a third time... Going towards. Hal dropped the instrument onto the couch and moved quickly throughout the house, grabbing up an umbrella on the way as he headed towards the back door.

He stopped, waiting carefully near the door, the area just within sight as he waited outside. He was a little rusty with the weapons since he had not gotten much time to himself for the past few months because of the children... But it wouldn't be so hard to beat someone over the head with the end of an umbrella. He could definitely manage it pretty damn easily.

He just had to wait for the right moment, listening carefully to the windows to hear... yes, someone was definitely coming.

Michael paused when pushing on one of the windows caused it to move slightly. His eyes narrowed and he peered inside before starting to open it. He didn't really notice the music had stopped, so focused was he on trying to climb through the window.

(He doesn't see Hal. Didn't want to say he got in, or too much more until I knew how Hal would react lol)

Hal was listening very carefully when he heard a creaking - but not a door creaking. It was probably more from one of the windows. The house was old, after all - built however many years ago and only barely kept up by him over the years. They weren't always in great condition, he thought, when passed on to the various Victors of Panem.

And it was creaking too much to be bumped against, wasn't it?

His eyes grew wide and Hal moved again throughout the house, trying to find the window and.... there it was - with a vaguely familiar figure that wore vaguely familiar clothing crawling up through it. Not that Hal cared how familiar they were. They were breaking into his house - maybe they were familiar because he had seen them scouting out the premises before without seeing it. Hal didn't care either way.

So, rather promptly, Hal was hiding around the door, ready to knock the man senseless with the umbrella as soon as he breached the threshold of the door.

Michael fell through the window more than climbed. Standing, he groaned a bit at a new ache in his side the tumble had caused. He searched his pockets until he found his personal flask. Downing enough whiskey to make that ache fade momentarily, he glanced around.

No one had come to investigate?

Micheal replaced his flask and strolled through the doorway.

(You can say he was hit and even knocked out for a bit. Its an umbrella so maybe he'll just be dazed? Whatever is more fun. Either way he falls down http://i48.tinypic.com/b7jrwg.png)

Hal swung the umbrella as soon as he saw the intruder come through the door - smacking the thing across the person's face with all the strength he had. Even though he was out of practice, it still hit and he was swear he heard something break, but looking at how limp the umbrella was now - he was pretty damn sure it was the umbrella. Not the person's face.

The person fell to the floor and Hal moved forwards to see a man on the floor, blinking and... awake, but clearly surprised. He might have continued an assault to knock him out before grabbing a phone to call to the Peacekeepers when he realized just who this was.

It was Tomsy.

"By gods, Tomsy, what made you think it was a good idea to sneak into another Victor's house?" Least of all one with children that needed protecting.

Pain registered, though it was somewhat dulled by alcohol. Alcohol was good for that. Then Tomsy was abruptly on the floor. He barely heard anything the other Victor said, though he could see him clearly enough, sort of, through vision blurred by the sting that was his entire face.

"Hal. Didn't know you had it in you. Very good. Am I bleeding?" he asked, touching his face for signs of blood. When he missed his face entirely, he instead rummaged around for his flask. That he'd never miss. He took a long swig, staying on the floor until the ground felt more grounded.

Hal laughed a bit easily. "Hey, I got kids to protect here. I have to have it in me." Even if he didn't want it to be in him - not really. It had to be. There wasn't much choice, really. "But, nah, you aren't bleeding. You might bruise, but that won't start showing for a bit."

He held up a hand to the man. "You need anything to eat or drink to help you?" He asked curiously. "No alcohol here, so I can't help there, but anything else?" The most they had was rubbing alcohol and the kind of alcohol used to treat wounds in his rather well-decked first aid kit. Neither of which were exactly safe to drink.

"Oh no, thats okay, I brought my own. Need another moment on the floor though if you don't mind," Michael took another swig of alcohol before letting Hal help him to his feet. He looked back at the window, then at Hal.

Something to protect. Michael had never been like that. Not in the killing someone sort of way. He'd left violence behind him after his games. Was that his problem? In some ways it had to have been. It had been the reason for his actions in the Victor Games hadn't it? The reason his entire family died.

And here was Hal. With a new family. How the man dared was beyond Tomsy.

"Haven't climbed through a window in some time. Just thought I'd try it out. I don't recommend it."

Hal grinned. Tomsy was both very foreign and very familiar to him. When he had been Reaped and become a Victor, Tomsy himself was only a few years older than him. Nineteen or twenty - only barely out of reaping age himself. Both of them had followed down the same path of alcohol fairly early - Hal only after a year or so of depression himself... Something, really, that had never gone away - simply faded and came back over and over again over the years.

Even if he had become a father - if he had not take a drink in an age in an attempt to become better about this - there was a certain familiarity to Tomsy that Hal took comfort in. He understood him not just in the way that Victors seemed to understand most other Victors (they all did have a unifying protectiveness of each other, it seemed), but more as one who had been down a similar road. They just... choose different paths.

"I would say that you could have used the front door, but I don't think that would have happened anyway." He said with a grin as he shrugged. Curiously, he asked, "What's brought you around here? Long way from Twelve, you know?" Especially for someone who looked like Tomsy did at the moment.

"I've used hundreds of front doors. I thought I'd switch things up a bit," Michael drawled in response. Hal's sobriety was making him thirsty. He took another swig from his flask.

He waved his drink in a half shrug. Why was he here? Well he used to visit random Victors all the time. In the same stroke, he used to love being in Twelve. Now every moment spent there reminded him of his failure and what he'd lost. No one there wanted to be near him, as he was so clearly marked as cursed by the Capitol.

And there was a viper in his home now.

"Change in scenery and all that. Six is looking very six like this time of year. How have you been? No alcohol huh? Thats rough," Michael wandered towards the hall, peering around the corner curiously.

"I'm fine. Doing all right with no drinking so far." It wasn't an option, really. If he fell off this wagon, then his children would suffer for it... and Pepper, with her training, couldn't afford that. Holly and Hawthorne? They needed him just as much as he needed Taylor for her help at this point in time. He picked up the umbrella he had, looking at it carefully.

He walked down the hallway. "The kids are being good right now, or else Taylor would have showed up by now." He observed with a shrug as he went to the main room, searching for a big enough trash can to dump the thing into. It wasn't like he could fix it after all. "Not much going on over here besides, though, unless small children entertain you." Stressed middle-aged men taking care of small children, that is, anwyay...

"Ah. That's what I thought," Michael grinned, swinging an arm around Hal in a gesture of friendship. "You're dying of boredom. I can see it in your face. Don't worry. I'm here to save you."

Hal might have told Tomsy no some other time but... he felt a bit uplifted. He didn't have to worry about the Games for some time now that those were over. By the time the Games would come around again - Pepper would be seventeen and almost out of the grasp of the Games. The twins would be a year and a half both and much easier to take care of at that point.

"What did you have in mind then, eh?" He asked, his own arm sliding onto Tomsy's shoulder easily in a return of the gesture, even if it wasn't exactly a conscious action.
