The night usually proved to be Ro's most productive hours, though here in the evacuation centre, there wasn't much to do besides sit around. Uaithne had a few books, but they never interested Ro too much unless they had lots of pictures. This entire place was too freaking boring.

Ro woke Uaithne up when Uaithne started to freak out in his sleep. It was perhaps one AM at the latest, and Ro hadn't been able to fall asleep at all. Flashlights were prohibited even for reading under the covers, and he couldn't find ways to make himself drift off to sleep--not that he really wanted to sleep anyhow. So when Uaithne began whimpering, and the whimpering escalated into cries, Ro eventually threw a wad of paper to get him to wake up. Uaithne stirred and woke, and Ro, too bored to stay in one place any longer, headed outside.

The rain pounded down, and Ro made himself comfortable on a cold cement slab of a step. Back against the wall, he pulled out a cigarette and stuck it in his lips. He had only just lit the cigarette and inhaled deeply when Uaithne appeared. Without a word, his brother sat down next to him. For several minutes they sat in silence, and Ro broke out the alcohol. Alcohol made it better. A little. With the help of the alcohol, Uaithne began to nod off to sleep, half slumped on Ro's shoulder. Ro took another swig of the drink and stared off into the rain, watching it pound down on the ground below.

Hazel was running through a corridor that never ended. She could run as long as she wanted to, it would never end. As she ran, the path seemed to get thinner and thinner, closing in on her while something reached for her from inside the hedges that made up the walls. But Hazel couldn't keep running forever. She was getting so tired... Only she couldn't stop. She wasn't running, she was being chased. She could see it in the edges of her vision. If she turned around to see what it looked like, it would catch her and do... something. Hazel wasn't sure what, but it was bad, and whatever the thing was, it was big and dark and horrible. Then, she tripped.

Hazel didn't get to find out what happened next, because she woke up to the sound of her own scream, drenched in sweat. You're not in the arena anymore, she reminded herself. She took a few moments to let her breathing and heart rate back to relative normal, ignoring the annoyed looks from the other people she'd woken up with her screams. It's not like she could help it. Out of all the recurring nightmares, that one was the worst. She was sure that if she dared turn around to look at the face of her chaser, it would be the boy from District Four that had sworn to kill her, and came very close to making good on that promise.

When Hazel noticed the Callahans' beds were empty, she immediately got up to look for them. She needed to get out of this room, and she didn't want to be alone. Or rather, alone with strangers. She felt like she was suffocating in it. She was relieved to find they were outside, welcoming the cool air. "Mind if I join you?" she asked softly, not waiting for an answer before sitting down a few feet away from them.

Ronan watched the water dribbling off the edge of the eve. There was no gutter, which was amusing considering that this building had been built as a place of shelter in case of the rain and other elements. Instead the roof came to an abrupt end, and all the water spilled off it, effectively creating a wall. Ro inhaled deeply on his cigarette. Somewhere to his side, a shadow moved, and he realized it was the same victor he found in the mud earlier today. Surprise, surprise.

He didn't say anything when she sat down. Didn't matter to him if she sat there as long as she wasn't a pest, though Hazel knew well enough not to get on his bad side. Which, he had to admit, was a pretty prominent part of him. He knew that he hadn't been pleasant to be with during the Games, but anyone who thought he should be acting nicer could die in a ditch for all he cared. A few moments of silence passed as they sat under the eves. There was nothing to say; it was clear that none of them could sleep (except for Uaithne now, and the alcohol no doubt had a part in it), so making a comment on it would be pointless.

"What do you think's on the other side of the Capitol?" he asked at last. His voice sounded eerie with only the rain to accompany it.

Hazel stared at the wall of water, still trying to fully pull herself from her nightmare. Her subconscious kept making the shapes she knew were just trees into the shadowy figure from her dream. Seeing them from behind the water made it all the worse, as it gave the illusion they were moving. Then she looked over at Uaithne, dozing off on Ronan's shoulder. She hoped he slept well, tough that probably wouldn't be the case.

Ronan's question took her by surprise. She'd never thought of what lay past the Capitol. "I don't know. Wastelands. The ruins of whatever was here before Panem. Maybe there's some other country." If there were another country out there, what did they think of Panem? She didn't want to think about it.

Sometimes when Ro couldn't sleep at night, he pondered what was outside of Panem. It was only two cities and the space between which wasn't much, all things considered. Yet at the same time, it was everything. With no knowledge of an outside world, perhaps there was nothing out there at all, and Panem was a big slab of land suspended in space. It was simultaneously the most ridiculous and plausible solution. To say that the notion of something greater than Panem arose after he went to the Games was false; it was something he had thought upon for many years, and sometimes he'd question Uaithne about it in the room they shared before he went to the Games. Uaithne always came up with something ridiculous, like extensive civilizations that treated everyone equally, or strange tribes of pygmies that worshipped the stray folk of Panem who dared to step outside the boarders. Ro liked his theory better; it seemed more realistic and concrete.

"Huh," he said. Hazel's idea was more dull than anything he could think of, that was certain. Inhaling deeply on his cigarette, he wondered how much he could say about this topic before the Peacekeepers shot him then and there. While there was no one standing at the door on the outside, he didn't doubt their monitoring systems, and his protection as a victor only went so far. He wanted to continue talking about it, but he couldn't. Maybe he could have before the Games, but to have a victor speaking such things....

"I hate this damned place," he finally growled, his voice a restrained shout. He wanted to punch something, beat the shit out of something, take out his rage on someone else for everything the Capitol had done, including its recent artwork known as the evacuation centre.

"I hate it too. Too many people." When there were other people in her house, Hazel found it even more difficult than usual to sleep. If she wasn't alone in the room, she'd be lucky if she get ten minuets of fitful, nightmare-filled sleep. Unfortunately, that didn't mean her body needed less sleep. She was dead tired, and would likely stay that way for the rest of her time in the evac center. Her eyelids drooped a bit, and she mentally slapped herself. No sleeping. That horrible thing would just chase her again.

"Sometimes I wonder who got the better deal; people like us, the victors, or the ones we killed to get here." Micah, Ellory, the boy from Eleven... they were probably all frolicking in meadows, enjoying a wonderful afterlife while Hazel sat sheltering from the rain in this miserable evacuation center, trying to fend off her inner demons. Sometimes, late at night, Hazel wished she'd died in the arena. Let the psycho from Four be haunted in his dreams instead of haunting Hazel's.

Ronan didn't bother to answer her question. He knew which option would be the more desirable, but he also knew that were he back in the arena, he'd struggle to win again. At that moment, Uaithne stirred and slowly sat up. He blinked a few times as though he didn't realize where he was or why he was there. But after a moment, he reached for the bottle and took a swig of alcohol.

Handing the bottle back to Ronan, Uaithne slumped back against the wall. He opened his mouth to say something when he stopped short.

"Hi, Hazel," he said shyly, and Ro realized that his brother didn't notice the other victor was there in the first place til a moment prior. He gave a dark chuckle.

When Uaithne began waking up, Hazel looked over. He seemed to have slept fairly peacefully. Lucky kid. When she saw him taking a drink of alcohol, she frowned. He was seventeen, he really should try to stay away from the stuff. Well, at least until the Games came back. Then he could drink as much as he damn well pleased. But she didn't say anything. It might come off the wrong way to Ronan, and she wasn't looking for a fight with Ronan. That was never a good idea especially not this late/early.

"Hi, Uaithne," she replied. It had been a bit funny to see his reaction to suddenly noticing her. Obviously his brother had thought it was funny too, as he laughed. "I couldn't sleep either," she stated. She didn't know why she felt the need to explain her presence. It was obvious why she was there, anyway. If she could sleep, she's be under the covers doing that right now. Instead, she was out here, talking to the Callahans and studying the underside of the roof like a textbook, trying to keep her mind occupied.

The victors’ curse. While neither he nor Ro talked about their inability to sleep at night, both of them knew that the other couldn’t sleep. And sometimes when Uaithne went out for a walk after dark, he could see lights on in other victor houses well into the morning. No one ever spoke about it. It was sort of like crapping. No one spoke about it unless it was a problem or part of an anecdote, and yet it was unavoidable. After the things he’d experienced in the arena—the physical and mental struggles he endured—he doubted that even the most hardened of Careers would be able to say that he slept perfectly fine through the night. If Ambrose had lived, would he have remembered for years to come the face of Lilly Callahan whenever he closed his eyes?

The cold, concrete wall behind him seeped in through his sweatshirt. It wasn’t wet—not much water reached this part of the porch due to the awnings—but the cold permeated his clothing and skin and settled into his bones. Or perhaps that was only the darkness come to taunt him with promises of peaceful dreams he would never have. Although Uaithne eyed the alcohol Ronan had in his hand, he didn’t make a move to reach it. It may make him feel better now, but what of the victors he saw on television who drank themselves stupid? Uaithne didn’t want to face reality, but he didn’t want to sink to that level, either.

Uaithne rubbed the sleep from his eyes and blinked several times.

“How long is the rain going to last?” he slurred, weariness grasping to his words. “Victor meeting place….”

Ro grinned and set the alcohol down next to him. There was perhaps half a bottle left now, and they’d have to space it out for the rest of the evening.

“Welcome to the club, kid,” Ro said. “Hazel will tell you. It’s where all the cool kids are at.”

Hazel chuckled slightly at Ronan calling them the 'cool kids'. "Yep, we're who everyone-" her sentence was interrupted by a yawn, "wants to be." She knew many people, even those that wouldn't want to touch the Games with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole envied her for her endless wealth and lack of responsibilities. Well they could have it. All the money in the world wasn't worth the arena. "I'm kind of surprised there's not more of us out here." She would definitely have a hard time believing all the other victors that had evacuated to this center were curled up in their cots, sleeping like babies. If they were, Hazel wanted to know their secret.

Hazel glanced at the bottle, considering asking for some. She quickly decided against it. She'd made a promise to herself: Capitol parties notwithstanding, no drinking. There were better ways to deal with pain than drowning them with a bottle. She'd seen far too many victors on TV act like idiots and become a national joke to want to drink. Hopefully her willpower remained as strong as it had been the past few years.

“They’re all at the Capitol,” Ro said, and Uaithne looked up at him. It hadn’t even occurred to him that going to the Capitol rather than the evacuation centre had been an option. His time in the Capitol had been limited; before the Games, he was restricted to only the Training Centre, and taking a tour of the place was the furthest thing from his mind. After the Games, all he wanted to do was go home. Whatever was at the Capitol must not be too interesting considering Ronan rarely spent time there; Uaithne didn’t know what would make it enticing to spend time with those who wanted you dead. The thought made him sick, though Ronan had, upon Uaithne’s victory, promised that there would be lots of parties in the future. And judging by Ronan’s tone at the time, this wasn’t a good thing.

“The Capitol?” Uaithne asked skeptically. Would that be betraying one’s family and friends? He knew that were Lilly alive, he’d never abandon her to be at the evac centre by herself, but maybe other victors would leave their kid sisters behind.

Ronan shrugged. “Get your own place. Don’t have to worry about sharing a room with five million other people,” he responded boredly.

It was always a mystery to her why victors would choose to go to the Capitol when they didn't have to. She'd never had anything but a miserable experience there. A bit hypocritical of her, considering she'd chosen to accompany Ronan to this year's games, but in her mind, that hadn't been her her. It was so Ronan could be as much of an drunken asshole as he wanted while someone else dealt with the formalities of being a mentor.

"I would personally have my eyes slowly clawed out by wild animals before getting a place in the Capitol." Live in a city where fun was eating until you puke and every single freaking conversation revolved around how great the Hunger Games were? No way. She glanced at the wall of water, wishing it would go away. "I wish we could see the sky," she commented. Some late nights, when she'd awoken from a particularly bad nightmare, she'd count the stars. The mind-numbing monotony distracted and calmed her.

Ronan didn't like the main sector of the Capital city because it was too crowded. The high buildings towering over him and threatening to collapse made him as claustrophobic as being in the arena all those years ago. If it weren't for that, he'd be more prone to going to the Capital to visit. Hell, maybe he'd even have an apartment there for when he wanted to get away from all the people in the districts. Before this last Games, he never thought too much of it because he had Lilly and Uaithne to take care of, and he wouldn't abandon them at home. But now that Uaithne was with him as a victor, he could get an apartment in the Capitol and visit it on the weekends. It would be a jolly good vacation home, wouldn't it?

"Is it . . . that bad?" he heard Uaithne ask. Ronan stared off into the curtain of water that spilled forth from the eves.

"No," he said. "It's a charming place where people frolic with unicorns and eat ice cream cones in everlasting spring."

His tone was harsh. Too harsh. A glance at Uaithne told him that his brother thought the same, judging by the dumbfounded expression at least. Ronan turned away and took another drink of the alcohol. Uaithne would find out for himself come next year when he had to live there and lead children to their deaths.

"Yeah, the Capitol pretty much sucks," she said matter-of-factly. Actually, if she wasn't a victor, the Capitol wouldn't be half bad. The food was good, the people watching was entertaining, and they sure loved a party. Maybe, if she didn't have so many horrible memories associated with the place, it would be great just for a visit. Definitely not to live, though. Their entire lives just seemed to frivolous and pointless. Then again, was she any better? It's not like she had anything meaningful to do. It was kind of depressing to think about.

Ronan was getting cranky. Uaithne knew him well enough to tell that something ticked him off—this Capital talk, maybe, or just the rain—and he would continue to be cranky til he got more booze or sleep. At the rate this was going, he guessed it would be the booze since neither of them would be getting much sleep.

Perhaps when next Games rolled around, Uaithne would better understand the dislike for the place. He supposed where he was now, he had the attitude of many district residents: appalled by the Capitol’s behavior, but curious regardless. These next Games, he’d be pushed into a world of mentoring and Capitol parties like Ro was every year, and perhaps then he’d understand it better. Therefore, he decided not to speak any more on this topic since it bothered both the other victors, and maybe there were better things to talk about. Or maybe he’d talk about nothing at all and go . . . to sleep. . . .

As Uaithne began to doze off, there came a scream from just inside the door. At first, Uaithne didn’t realize what it was, but when the scream came again, his eyelids fluttered open and he sat at attention.

“What was that?” he asked, looking towards the entrance to the building.
