• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Hazel hated the evacuation centers. She hated them with a passion. They were overcrowded and very claustrophobic. Being in them just freaked her out. So, she was spending as much time indoors as she could. Currently, she was sprawled, spread-eagle in the middle of the field, rain pounding on her skin and ever so slowly sinking into the mud below her. Why was she doing that? Because she could. The rules here were so strict, Peacekeepers everywhere, so just doing something cooky was a bit exhilarating. Besides that, the rain felt good on her skin, cool and refreshing. No one would question her. She was a victor, people knew that sometimes, victors did odd things. One only had to look at the arrangements Hazel made out of flowers on a regular basis to see that. So Hazel continued lying in the mud, not giving a rip what anyone thought.

Ronan didn't like the confines of the evac centre; he loathed being cooped up like animals with everyone else, though, to the Capitol, that's all they were. There was no escaping the Capitol's views towards them, and Ronan had half a mind that there really was no flood at all. It was only the constant rain pouring down that discredited this theory. So, after setting up camp in one of the cots, Ro went out for a stroll. And who should he find but his knew roomie?

He and Uaithne had taken it into their own hands to choose cots . . . one of them on either side of Hazel Burnett, a fellow victor. Ro knew it pissed her off to even have to live near them, and now that they were squished into an evacuation centre together, she had to sleep near them, too. No, not just near them: between them. Which made it all the more humorous. And now she was lying out here in the mud.

"Sleeping in the mud like the pig you are," he commented as he came to a stop a foot from her. He tapped the toe of his boot against her ribcage.

Hazel was torn from her thoughts when Ronan came over. Dammit, why did he have to be her? The day was actually going well. "Better than sleeping next to you," she returned. She hadn't even been surprised when he and Uaithne chosen cots on either side of her. Annoying her seemed to be their favorite game. But she took it in good humor. She honestly enjoyed their company, even if they- especially Ronan- were hard to get along with. However, right now she didn't particularly want to deal with him. All these people were stressing her out. "Ugh, move. You're blocking my sun," she said, obviously sarcastic as there wasn't any sun to block. "Can't you..." she trailed off, not knowing exactly what she should suggest he do.

"You know," said Ronan. He wasn't looking at Hazel anymore, but out across the yard and to the evacuation centre where a few people roamed under the awnings. Two peacekeepers stood on either side of the door. No one seemed to pay any heed to them out on the lawn. "You'd think they'd treat us better, since we're victors and all. We didn't go to the Games to sleep on cots with a hundred other people in the room."

Genevieve wouldn't have minded the evacuation center as much as she did if they had let her keep her sword. How the hell was she supposed to feel better when she was down without it? Better yet, how the hell was she supposed to train without it!? Did the word "career" mean anything to those dumbass Peacekeepers?

She walked into the open area, glowering at one of the Peacekeepers nearby. Genevieve would've kept on glowering if it wasn't for the rain. Rain! Rain made her spirits lift up, and even with a potential natural disaster trying to sweep away District 1, Genevieve perked up as the cold droplets fell on her. She couldn't help it. Genevieve did a little twirl, ignoring the fact that there was other people around and probably watching.

After the twirl, Genevieve finally registered who the other people were. Some Peacekeepers, a random handful of refugee Panemites, and two victors: Hazel Burnett and Ronan Callahan. Even though she couldn't see his face Genevieve knew the older Callahan brother when she saw him – after their first (and latest) encounter, Genevieve can finally tell Ronan apart from Uaithne.

She smirked at the two. Hazel was lying in the mud - probably some ritual of District 5's. The damn heathens. Ronan stood over her, but because his back was turned to her Genevieve couldn't see what he was doing. But she was close enough to hear him say:

"You'd think they'd treat us better, since we're victors and all. We didn't go to the Games to sleep on cots with a hundred other people in the room."

Genevieve couldn't help it. She snickered. "What if the victors suck?" Eh, not the greatest insult, but whatever. With a smug smile and crossed arms, Genevieve walked closer to Ronan and Hazel. "How's your nuts, Callahan?" she asked. "Hope I didn't crack them too hard…"

Hazel looked at the newcomer, annoyed. "Heey, we don't suck," she whined. "Or at least I don't," she added, giving Ronan a look. Feeling that if she was going to talk to someone she didn't know very well, she might as well not be in the mud, she stood up. She was really dirty. Her entire back was soaked in mud, and there was mud tangled in her hair. Unfortunately, showering meant going inside. She made the decision that as long as the mud somehow got out of her hair, she would just not care that she was soaking wet and completely filthy. At first, Hazel was confused at Genevieve's comments about nuts, until she realized that she and Ronan had probably gotten into a fist fight, where she'd gone for a groin attack. Ouch.

Of course he'd end up at the same evacuation centre as Genevieve Nike. That was okay--he could work with this. He turned at the sound of her voice.

"They're doing alright, thanks for asking," he replied calmly. "Closest you'll ever get to them, so I hope you enjoyed it." And then the thought of his balls and Genevieve in the same sentence almost make him puke, so he changed topics:

"On our next date, I'll remember to get you red roses instead of yellow ones. I didn't know you'd throw such a fit."

Genevieve almost gagged at the thought of getting close to Ronan's balls. "Pervert," she hissed under her breath, before saying more clearly, "I wasn't happy because you dyed them with your urine. Knowing your district, you'd find a way to do that..." She looked at Hazel with distaste.

Hazel nearly laughed out loud at Ronan's ball comment. Sometimes she wished she could be a fly on the wall during his arguments, they were almost always entertaining. Unless they were directed at her, then they just kind of sucked. She gave Genevieve annoyed glance at her comment. "Nah, pee would mess up the smell of the flowers," she said, enjoying messing with Genevieve, even if she wasn't doing a particularly good job of it.

Ronan didn't know if he should throw Hazel at Genevieve and leave the conversation entirely or continue the banter. Some days the chatter grew dull, though today he knew it was mostly the situation. Here he was on unfamiliar ground in a place he couldn't escape. He hated to be inside because it was far too crowded and the ceilings too low and the walls too narrow. The longer he stayed inside, the smaller the building became. If he had a choice, he'd sleep outdoors.

Turning away from Genevieve, he focused his attention on Hazel. Mostly just to piss the District One girl off more than anything else. She wasn't the type that enjoyed to be ignored.

"There's a reason District One never wins," he said to Hazel. "They can't have people like this one procreating and carrying on their shit genes."

Genevieve felt her eye-lid start twitching. "And what of District 5?" she hissed. "What do they do until their much needed demise? They hide like a bunch of cowardly asses, and then if they win - which they usually don't - they call themselves brave and heroic. But really, they're all a bunch of wimps who carry their dead sisters around like purses." She spat. "The damn he-she's."

She stepped closer to Ronan until they were an inch apart. "I hope you enjoy mentoring corpses next year, Callahan," she hissed, making sure Hazel heard it, too.

"The Games are jut as mental as they are physical. Doing nothing is a strategy. I think Uaithne proves that it can definitely work out." If one had to chose between Uaithne's actions in the arena as a planned-out strategy or simple cowardice, most would choose the latter. However, Hazel felt the need to defend the boy's honor when there was this angry girl coming over and bashing him. "You can't win with the brains of a flea." Hazel had no idea if the other girl was dumb or not, but coming over and insulting Uaithne in front of Ronan after they'd obviously already fought said quite a bit about her. And insulting Lily? She better be a damned good fighter.

Ronan clenched and unclenched his jaw while the girls spoke, and his eyes remained locked on the District One girl. His fists ached to smash in Genevieve's face, but by now several people had trickled to the out of doors and the peacekeepers were watching them all. Ro may be a victor, but this wasn't like being out on the streets where the peacekeepers didn't give a rat's ass. Here it was crowded, and a single punch could act as a catalyst for a larger frenzy.

At last he did the only thing that he could do, or at least the one that would piss Genevieve off the most: he moved closer to the District One girl and gave her a good, solid kiss on the lips.

Whoa.

Whoa.

Just...whoa.

Genevieve stared at Ronan when the kiss finally ended. Her face was just dumb-struck, and nothing else. "...Damn, Callahan," she muttered, but that was all she could manage

A silence brought a since of awkwardness came from the District 1 girl as she stared at Ro. "D...damn..." Genevieve muttered, blinking rapidly. Almost mechanically, she turned away from the victors, and slowly walked back to the building. After crossing a few yards away from the two victors, Genevieve looked over her shoulder, just to make sure they – especially Ronan - weren't following her.

After a few blinks, the shock of seeing Ronan kiss Genevieve wore off. Then, the absurdity of the situation hit her. She felt laughter bubbling up inside her, made only more intense when she saw the shocked and horrified expression on the girl's face. Hazel laughed harder than she had in a very long time. It wasn't even that funny, but at the same time it was. By the time Hazel finished laughing, Genevieve was walking away. Hazel smiled as she watched her go. "Well played Ronan, well played." She absentmindedly ran her fingers in her hair and suddenly a thought came to her. "Hey, is that the same psycho that attacked Uaithne? She sure seems crazy enough."
