Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Uaithne last visited only a few months ago, but it felt like years. He didn’t attend school as much as he ought to have before his Games; Lilly had always been the studious one. Coming back to this place brought the same level of reminiscing that returning to many places of one’s past brought: the same sort of feeling of opening a book read years ago. But instead of the longing for adventure, Uaithne longed for normalcy; he yearned to return to the days before the 97th Hunger Games when his sister was still alive, and the two of them would walk home from school together. When Uaithne had detention, Lilly stayed late to wait for him, and he could expect to find her near the birch tree in front of the school.

Reminiscing did little good, and Uaithne knew he was better without it. This was school, a place he liked but didn’t like to admit that he liked because his older brother didn’t like it. This wasn’t his sister’s grave, and he would do better to remember that. However, the task was difficult when he was here to pick up some sort of token her classmates had made to honor their fallen peer. Technically Uaithne was supposed to have received the token through a presentation awhile ago, but he had called in ill. He didn’t want to deal with it.

After a few minutes of waiting in the hall, Uaithne found himself drifting down the corridor and into a classroom. He expected to see dust on the desks like in the movies where people explore old buildings, but of course, the classrooms had been used today as they had been every day. Wandering between the desks, Uaithne found himself drawn towards the window. The bright spring sun illuminated the yard. The District Five level was between Districts Four and Six, and thus occupied the second story. From here, he could see a good portion of the yard, but it was void of the kids who normally populated the classrooms. They had gone home for the day.

Rosie hadn't exactly known why she was picked for the task. She paid attention in class, yes, but she never liked doing things for the teacher. Rosie had been told to give one of the District 5 teachers a weird notebook. As she walked, of course she read it, how could she not? Her eyes rolled across the words, every now and then taking a break to look up to see if anyone was watching, then she would continue. It was stupid things like names of students, and some lesson things. Rosie closed the small notebook, and held it to her right side.

Rosie looked around at the district she had walked into. She was fairly certain that it was District 5, and it was actually nice. She found the school building, and began walking up the stairs. It seemed that most of the classrooms were empty, but she hoped that the teacher she was going to was there. She found the floor that was for the 5th district. She opened the door that was written on the front of the notebook, only to find it empty.

She walked in to find a boy, one she thought looked slightly familiar. But she didn't go around asking who people were, instead she walked up to the main desk, and set down the notebook, only to look back towards the guy.

Uh, Hello? Did the teacher already leave?

At the sound of the voice, Uaithne turned around. For a moment—just the briefest moment—he thought he recognized her, only to dumbly realize that he was wrong. He didn’t recognize her; maybe he just projected one of his memories on the girl for the briefest of moments, but he didn’t know her.

“Oh, I—” he started. He glanced around the classroom. One wall was covered in essays or something of the nature with a fair amount of words, and another had posters of Panem’s presidents and other historical facts. The empty desks bore scratches and drawings; Uaithne recognized the classroom as one he’d been in for history a couple years ago, and another class he couldn’t recall the year before that. But the two of them were alone—no teacher or pupil remained. “I don’t know—probably if there’s no teacher here.”

Unless the teacher stepped out of the classroom, which meant he was misinforming the girl. He scratched absently at the back of his head. “I don’t know whose classroom it is.”

Rosie had a slight trouble of hearing what the guy said for the fact that her right ear was deaf. She read his lips, and then sighed. She hated doing something and not succeeding. She knew what classroom it was, for the fact that it was written on the front of the notebook she had brought. She smiled a bit, and then finally realized who the boy was. He had been the victor of the 97th Hunger games. She didn't become a fan girl at that moment, but she did want to acknowledge him for it.

So your the Victor of the 97th hunger games? I thought you seemed a tad bit familiar. She looked around the room, it was nice. Looked like it was mostly used for the older kids, but she had no clue. It seemed completely different from the District twelve classrooms. She twirled a lock of her hair around her left index finger, and she walked over to the windows, looking down at the yard.

Rosie coughed the other way of the boy, and then smiled, and blushed at the boy. By the way, I'm Rosie. District 12.

Uaithne took in a sharp breath. Being acknowledged for being a victor was about as warm and fuzzy as being acknowledged for running a kid over with a steamroller. Really, it wasn’t too different, and yet one was held in much higher esteem than the other, a disturbing little part of Panem’s history.

“Nice to meet you, Rosie,” he said. “What are you doing in a District Five classroom?” Of all places.

((Pst! Don’t forget the quotation marks wink.gif ))

Rosie hadn't heard the sharp breath, thus not knowing his first reaction to her acknowledging him for being a Victor. She hadn't exactly meant for him to be upset by it, in fact she was sort of proud. He had been through life's nightmares, and won. Thus making him a cool sort of guy in her eyes. Rosie smile slightly when he began talking.

"I'm delivering a notebook to this room's teacher. Who turned out not to be here." She twirled her hair a bit more, and continued to look down at the yard. "And may I ask what your name is?" She looked up, and stared at him.

Woops. Uaithne assumed that she knew his name if she knew that he was a victor; he had recently won, and his name seemed to be a popular one. Though if she was from District 12, she probably didn’t care about the affairs of the upper districts, despite plenty of rumours circulating about him. That was fine with him—the less public spotlight, the better.

“Oh, uh, Uaithne Callahan. Sorry,” he stumbled.

Rosie hadn't exactly thought she was going to talk to anyone on this delivery, but at least she had something to do. She hadn't thought much about what she was going to do when she got home anyway, probably just read to her brother, but he would probably want to play. Rosie ignored those thoughts, and then looked at the guy. His name was Uaithne. It was very unique. She liked it.

"You sir, have a very nice name. Very unique." She smiled, and poked his shoulder after she said it, hoping not to come off a bit too weird. But that was just how she was. She hadn't noticed that he stumbled, again because of her right deaf ear. But she didn't care, she was who she was.

“Thank you,” he said uneasily. It was sort of funny, but after he became victor, and older victor had come forward and offered Uaithne assistance with public speaking; said he’d need a good deal of communication now that he was in public spotlight. Uaithne had laughed it off because Ronan had laughed it off; the entire notion was absolutely ridiculous. But now—of all times—Uaithne wished that he had taken the victor up on. He never used to stumble this much during conversations.

“Er, Rosie’s a nice name, too. Like the flower, huh?”

And maybe it was time to make an exit before he said anything dumb. He glanced at the notebook on the desk, wondering briefly what it was for, but deciding that it wasn’t his business and he had better things to do.

Rosie hadn't exactly paid much attention as she stood there. She really missed her mother, and was really upset for the fact that she was in her mothers favorite district. Her mother loved how nice it was, even though it was still lower then the career districts. Rosie was named after her mother, who's name was Rosalind. She sighed as she remembered her nice red hair, and her amazing grey eyes.

"My name is from my mother, Rosalind." She wasn't entirely upset over this, but she had felt a small feeling of sadness eat her insides.

“Cool,” Uaithne said. “Well, I have to leave.”

He gave the girl a nod of farewell and headed towards the door. There were other things he had to do, and the longer he stayed here, the more he thought about how he didn’t belong in this fragment of his past. He needed to pick up whatever the school had to present him, and then he’d leave before he regretted coming here in the first place.

However, on his way to the door, Uaithne heard footsteps and the sound of squeaky wheels. The door slammed shut, and when Uaithne reached out for the handle, the click-click of a lock. . . . Regardless of the noise, he grabbed the knob and gave the handle a good turn and then a shake. Locked, as the sound had implied.

“It’s the janitor—” Uaithne explained. “He’s blind.”

Rosie smiled, and nodded as the boy began to leave, and she continued to stare down at the yard. For some reason it was so soothing. She blinked and looked away, watching as the boy began to walk away. But then he couldn't open the door. She hadn't heard the click of the lock, and barely heard what he had said. But she read his lips thankfully, and she gasped.

"So were stuck in here? How long?" She looked around for a clock, and found one. She had to be home in three hours so she could make dinner for her brother, while her father worked at the coal mine. She sighed, and wanted to pull her hair out. But she breathed in, and breathed out, and smiled. "So what do we do?"

Uaithne stared at the door for a moment before slamming his closed fist against the wood. Ignoring the girl behind him, he called out, “Hey!”

To no avail. Because the janitor was deaf as well.

Taking a step away from the door, Uaithne tried to calculate his next plan of action. There weren’t many choices here: the window, the air vents, or sit and wait until someone came and opened up the classroom. The air vents probably wouldn’t hold his weight, and he didn’t want to stay in this classroom any longer, so—the window it was.

Finally Uaithne responded to the girl, his eyes still on the door. “Until we find a way out.”

Rosie had watched as the guy hit the door, she stood in shock. They were stuck. She wasn't going to loose it. She just needed to find a way out. Her mind started like clockwork, she began looking around, then turned around to see how far up they were. They were on the second floor of the building, and it would hurt to fall from there. She didn't freak out, but instead looked in the teachers desk. Maybe there was something they could use to pick the lock. She was a strategist after all.

Uaithne whipped around and rushed to the teacher’s desk. His hands wrapped around a small metal statue of someone who he was certain he was supposed to remember from his history lessons but he just couldn’t recall. It didn’t matter. Within moments, he was at the window with the statue raised above his head. Uaithne brought the statue down against the glass. It didn’t shatter, but it split. A small crack, right in the centre. Uaithne swung the statue again. The crack widened.
