Elihu had been more or less settled into the house for only a week, but in that time a lot seemed to have happened. Sebastian had already given him something of a tour, but the house was huge. Huge enough that there were, what? Eight people here, tons of animals, and still plenty of room so that running into some of them for days was definitely a thing that could be done.

Eli, for his part, was not confident enough to wander outside of the Victor Village yet, although he had fallen into the habit of going for runs around the area in the early morning. He would feel better about it soon, though, especially the more and more Sebastian seemed to be prompting him to wander into different places with him.

Besides, there was a gigantic library on the second floor of the house.

Let that be reiterated:

There was a gigantic library in the house.

Elihu was practically ecstatic when Sebastian had brought him in. It had taken every ounce of self-control he had to stop from jumping on top of the younger man. Instead, he had the control to just hug him very tightly as he laughed, telling him that he was sure they would be fine with another book lover in the house.

He hadn't been able to read in months - since he had had his tongue cut out. Books weren't exactly an encouraged past time for avoxes, even ones that were simply waiting to be bought. The massive amount of choice after none at all made standing in the room a little overwhelming, but eventually he had gotten used to it enough that he picked a few books to begin.

He was returning those two now to their shelves and picking a third. He was thankful for his height - or this may have been a problem. Still, he tugged a bit too strongly on one that looked interesting and a few books toppled down on top of him.

He yelped and looked around, surrounded by probably six or so books that had fallen down. He knelt down and started to gather them, hoping no one was home that would have taken notice of it.

Bolt had come home from work to, as usual, an empty house. Or rather, not empty, but quiet. His brother's Victor mansion was full to bursting with people, animals, things…and yet, whenever Bolt wandered in from work, he always found an eerie silence. This house, he had decided, had been through the ringer. It was not the same place he had come home to ten years ago, when his children were young and happy to see him, when his wife had been…well, his wife. When his family had been whole.

They had been through so much, he knew, and yet they were some of the luckiest in Ten. It was just hard to remember, when there was always someone or other mourning somebody in the house.

He was on his way to the library, his refuge when all was quiet--might as well keep on working, who was to stop him?--when a sort of yelp and the sound of something falling hastened his steps. He shoved open the door of the library and glanced hastily around, as if looking for the emergency--only to start in surprise as he saw the strange man standing in his library.

No--not strange man, he had to remind himself. Avox. Household resident. Sebastian's new friend, and a damn good thing for the boy right now, too. The Avox--Eli, he thought--had only been around a couple of days or so, and Bolt had only met him the once.

He'd sort of forgotten he was here, in all honesty.

"Oh--sorry about that," he said, shoving his hands sheepishly into his pockets. "I hear the, uh…noise, thought it was one of the kids and…well."

He cleared his throat and glanced around, his gaze landing on the books Eli had been reaching for. "Some…light reading?" he asked quizzically.

Elihu heard the footsteps as they came and a man came through - not one he was overly familiar with, but one he had met, however briefly, on one of the earlier days here. Sebastian had been careful to introduce him, even slightly, to all of the others. He hadn't needed one for Twist - a Victor who he could not say he remembered from any kind of Victory. Elihu had not even been born during his Victory, he was fairly sure... But in the months where he had been shuffled into the training center while they waited for someone in the districts to pick him up as an avox, he had met the man once, even if he had remembered nothing of him.

He knew nothing of the children or the man - other than in the fashion that Sebastian had told him. This was Bolt - Twist's brother. Sebastian's uncle. A doctor, he remembered, which had made him more than a little excited, although he had been a bit too overwhelmed then to even want to express as much.

As the man spoke, he responded. He smiled sheepishly and held up a hand with his pointing finger and his thumb together. Just a little. He started picking up the books and started making signs with one hand before stopping entirely.

He had to remember. Not everyone here were avoxes in the Capitol who had some basic sense of hand-language somewhere in the recesses of their brain. He put a few of the books on the shelf quickly before reaching in his back pocket, where he had stowed a pen and a notepad for times like this.

Doctor? He wrote in his handwriting, hoping that perhaps he could read it. Sometimes people could not - apparently, school had ruined whatever good penmanship he had had as a teenager. He held it out to him, as if asking if that was him.

Bolt gave a brief, awkward sort of smile, nodding in approval as Eli indicated that he was, in fact, reading. Bolt didn't mind at all--he liked to see people with their noses in books rather than sitting around, letting their brains turn to mush in front of the television, gorging on Games reruns. He wished his kids would read more--though these days, they could be award-winning authors at this point, and he'd probably never even know it.

"Good, good," he said. "There's plenty here so…er…" He squinted at the Avox, trying to follow the motions of his hands, but after that first one, he was lost. It was interesting, actually--there was a certain practice to his movements, as if he had done this a lot before. He supposed this was how they communicated, the Avoxes--perhaps even in the Capitol. He had no way of knowing, really, but he found the idea rather intriguing.

The notepad, however, was more useful for the moment. He peered at the word written there and then nodded. "Yes, that's me," he said. "I've just come from my practice. I read in here sometimes, after work, when the, uh…rest of the family's not around. Finish things up, you know. I've got some medical texts," he added, pointing to one of the low shelves, packed with thick books. "Just there, for when something really tricky pops up. Not exactly 'light' reading, though, I suppose."

Eli took note of the row of books he gestured to and nodded, carefully. This part he filed away. Not perhaps light reading, but perhaps something he could employ for knowledge later. He probably would need to read some of those to keep himself sharp, even if he was never going to see the inside of any school ever again. Sebastian and this family, he supposed, could do a lot for him.

They couldn't help him finish school now. No one could.

I was getting my doctorate before. Therapy focus. He purposely did not say what that was 'before' of - Bolt probably could put together what he meant. Where did you go? He held the notebook out to the man again. Maybe he should teach the family the hand language - that might be a good idea. Sebastian might be willing, at least.

He was curious. He had heard that schools in the districts tended to vary with doctors, although he imagined since this was a Victor's brother... He probably could have afforded to go to a much better school than most others in Ten. Even if he had not ever had those as options since Capitolites could not travel from the Capitol, he had known a few of the bigger schools just out of his own curious nature regarding this kind of thing.

Bolt shifted somewhat uncomfortable while Eli scribbled on his notepad; it was odd, this not being able to talk to someone but yet, communicating. There was a bit of a strange delay that he knew came from his end; if they knew each other well, Eli and Bolt, it wouldn't be as odd. But here was a stranger in his home with whom he could barely communicate; it was decidedly an interesting situation.

But the next words erased that odd feeling, piquing his interest instead, and he couldn't help the way his eyebrows raised instinctively. "A…therapist?" he asked, unable to hide the surprise in his voice. "That's…that must be very interesting."

More interesting, in fact, was the idea that the Capitol had sent Sebastian a therapist Avox. What kind of message was that? Not that Bolt disapproved, really--but it seemed quite coincidental. And though he knew he had no right to ask, he couldn't help but wonder what a doctoral student in therapy had done to get himself Avoxed.

"Oh, there's just one major medical school here," he said, in response to the question. "For people, that is. Plenty of stuff about animals, but if you want to take care of humans around here, you've got limited choices. Still, good school, great teachers, and there are plenty of doctors around, so it does its job."

He hesitated, then asked, "And…where were you studying, before?"

Eli considered this. He supposed that made sense. This was the livestock district, as the smell had consistently reminded him whenever he did wander too much outside of the Victor Village on his own. Not that this happened much. Sebastian seemed to be keeping him on a tight leash, although he could not quite determine why that was either.

Called Bernard's. Not a therapist. I didn't finish.

Actually writing that out was painful. His family was filled with people in the medical field. It was a thing for them - the Blackburns. But, even then, most of them were varying. Some were nurses, sure, but most worked in extremely varying fields. He had only been one of two therapists - and that other one had a specialization in children and family that he had not wanted to try for.

Bernard's, itself, was a rather well-known school in the Capitol. They had a great medical school and, due to the fact that much of his family had gone there, he had been a bit of shoe in, but his determination and intelligence certainly helped. It hurt to admit that he had not been able to finish and never would be able to do that.

Studying people is interesting.

This was a lot of writing. He guessed he would have to get used to that.

Bolt squinted and read the next note, his face lighting up at the name of the school. "Bernard's," he said, nodding knowingly. "Yes, I've heard of it--only through study, obviously--can't get into a Capitol school and all that, but I've always heard it's a fine place. Shame not to have access to a place like that out here, but what can you do? We all get by just fine, anyway."

Bolt had never, not once, doubted his training or his education; he knew he was good at what he did, and he respected his colleagues because he had studied alongside them--they were all good, as far as doctors (for humans) went. But if they had access to the best training, to the most advanced treatments…well, District Ten would be a different place.

As for Eli's not finishing school, well, that was regrettable. But certainly, he had acquired some good general knowledge, and an understanding of any sort of psychology, in Ten, was well above the average person's ability.

"It is," he agreed, at the next note. "It's quite interesting. Wish I'd had a little more time to do it myself, but there's more of an urgent need for someone who knows how to set bones and things around here, so there you go."

Without realizing it, as he talked about work, his passion, Bolt became more and more at ease. "What exactly did you find most interesting?" he asked, leaning back against one of the bookshelves. "Any fascinating case studies up in the Capitol?"

He was not surprised to learn that therapy was a rare, if not entirely non-existent, practice in a place like Ten. Even if people were taught how to address that, it was not like most people could afford a therapist here. Maybe in some of the upper districts there were some. One, Two, Three, maybe even Four. He doubted that there would be many in districts lower than that.

Here, though, Eli doubted that they had access to much at all that much medicine. Some, sure, but he doubted that they would even have the kind of things that could be found in, say, somewhere like Six. Let along the Capitol itself. It was depressing to think as much.

I liked studying patients who suffered emotional trauma. There was just so much there in how people responded. Some broke down, of course... And some did not, obviously. It was a general sort of investment, but one that also opened up to plenty of people who had problems that often varied in not just intensities, but in details and symptoms as well. But my final paper was supposed to be about the bystander effect as a circular system effecting a community as a whole and not just the one/few victims that are ignored.

Bolt frowned in thought as he read the words of Eli's next note, which took a fair moment to scrawl out. Emotional trauma, that caught his attention right away, and he glanced up, arching an eyebrow as he considered, quite suddenly, that perhaps this Avox hadn't ended up in their household entirely by chance. How, exactly, had Sebastian brought him home?

But then, a therapist was not exactly a spy, and Bolt was not by nature a suspicious person. If anything, having someone around who knew how to deal with people's emotions…well, it might actually be helpful. The kid had enough going on by himself, but there were emotions all around this house, in every nook and cranny. Enough for a brand new thesis, really.

"Interesting," Bolt said. "Did you ever study…the Games? Their effect on the Victors, the families…that sort of thing?"

Eli paused at the question. The Games had actually largely influenced his body of work, although he had not dared to actively incorporate that into what he was working on. He could have, of course, and probably would have been executed for it. Specifically, however, he had taken a look at the Reapings and how in lower districts many people did, essentially, stand by and do nothing as something horrible happened to a handful of children and how that not just was a horror for the children, but for everyone watching in the capacity as another district resident.

If I did, I probably would've been an avox sooner. Eli wrote quickly. And I wouldn't have told anyone as much if I did.

He help up the paper with a sheepish smile. He wasn't sure what Bolt would make of this, really. He was tempted to still write about things and he knew that as far as emotional trauma... he was kind of given the mothership of it by being put here of all places.

Bolt's face darkened for a moment as he read what was on the next note, and then he split into a sheepish grin and nodded. "Of course," he said. "Obviously that would be...not the top priority, considering where you're coming from and all. A rather grandiose conflict of interest, I imagine."

Obviously, the Capitol would not want its precious Games to come under any scrutiny, even from a psychological standpoint. He was sure they had their own doctors, fit to say whatever worked for the government. Nobody there, he was sure, was very keen on truth, or there probably wouldn't have been as many Avoxes as there were out in the districts.

"Well...there are lots of interesting people to watch in Ten," he went on. "Plenty of specimens for study even if it's an...unofficial sort of study. We all have our share of the fallout from the Games."

Eli had not been outside of the house much as of yet. Sure, he had been out and about, but often only trailing behind Sebastian in helping him run errands. Still, he hadn't needed to be out and about much to know what Bolt said was more than true.

I noticed. It was a strange world to be thrust into, but at least it seemed like the people who surrounded him weren't the kind to lash out at him. From more than just Games, though. Or so he thought. The Games were an element, but there were other things too. Long hours - hard work - limited resources - poor schooling.

They all probably played a part in it, or so he believed.

Bolt nodded gravely at the next note. It was true, living in Ten was perhaps a new and gruelling experience for someone who had never been exposed to their conditions before, like Eli. But living in the Victor Village was far from living in the slums of Ten, or even on a hard-working farm. Still, the lower districts had to be a complete culture shock for someone from the Capitol, and Bolt was actually quite interested to see what a fresh pair of eyes made of their district.

"Yes...it's not the most luxurious places, for most people, but it's home," he said. "It's actually...well, it's different, being from here--sort of on the higher end of the rural area, if you discount the smell, though most of us can't even tell it exists anymore, and yet, so far separated in lifestyle from some of the other districts, which you're perhaps more familiar with...or at least, more exposed to, I suppose. I wonder...have you made any interesting observations, since you've been here?"

I've followed S. around, so I've seen more. Not much.

He figured he didn't need to write out Sebastian's name. It was a nice one - the kind that could really roll off the tongue. Except it was also rather long and difficult to write all of it. Just the initial should be fine for now, and he figured that Bolt would be able to catch on. He was intelligent enough, after all.

Kids work really young. They all seemed to be really self-sufficient from a young age - even the ones that were rather clearly from more affluent families in the area. He supposed this was good, if there wasn't only so high of a ladder that one could climb in Ten without becoming a Winner of sorts... which was, as had been shown in the past, an unreliable dream at best.
