• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Sebastian wasn't having a good night, apparently. Not just for the cold, but more for the simple and undeniable fact that he kept waking up on the edge of a dream - probably a nightmare. He woke up mumbling - crying at some point, he suspected, from the wetness of his eyes when he woke up once. Or maybe it was just sweat. He had been tossing and turning a lot - so sweat was definitely a possibility, even if it was not a flattering one.

It was dark in the Arena again. He was walking away, angry about the loss of an ally, but knowing that it would not be long before it would all be over anyway. One way or another, there was not much time left to be mournful over losing such an advantage.

He went towards the large trap he had set up, hearing the sound of a whimpering human and felt a sense of familiarity with the scene that he could not place. And he turned to see... A girl with long dark hair - small. Strung up in the tree and crying, one of her legs clearly broken from the force of being dragged upwards in the trap.

It was Hallie.

He woke up, this time screaming as he nearly fell out of the bed, the sheets tangled around his legs. "Shit, no, I didn't do - I didn't - she wasn't in - I didn't mean to - F*CK!" He was trying to get on his own two feet, untangling himself as he stood.

She prowled the hallways, making as little sound as possible as she sneaked from shadow to shadow. A cat, she thought dreamily. It would be nice to be a cat. They didn't seem to cat about anything. Death...well they were unperturbed by it weren't they? As they were deathbringers themselves.

Being used to little sleep and coping well with it were two very different things. Most of the time she felt like she was asleep even when she was awake. How long had she been like this now? It seemed like forever. It couldn't have been a year now? No, no even so long.

At first she'd tried staying in her room, but she was too restless. So now, at night, when the other slept, she patrolled. Shadow to shadow. Listening to the murmurs and cries, the snoring of deep slumber. It seemed wrong that no one be awake. What if someone got sick? What if something bad happened? They'd all be asleep. Unaware.

It was better to be on guard.

Cara stopped at her usual post. The familiar unhappy noises came from within this door. Biting her lip, she leaned on the wall outside, her head resting on the side of the door.

Eventually she moved on. There was nothing she could do. Was there? No. Nothing. She drifted like a ghost, watching outside anxiously until she could bear it no more. She had to go outside. Just for a little bit. She'd sit on the roof, super still, so quiet no one would hear. She'd be able to nap a little if she was outside. Probably. And-

A scream from Sebastian's room had her jumping. She'd been walking right past and-

-Sebastian. Screaming. She yanked open the door, almost tripping as she stumbled into the room to fast, started to find him on the floor. Her eyes were wide, her heart hammering.

"S-S-sebastian? Are you-" she stopped then. It was more than she'd said to him in longer than she could remember. When had she stopped talking to him? Or anyone? When was the last time you had a real conversation with anyone? Why was he not in his bed? Why was he...Her voice sounded so strange. Especially in the quiet. "...you're alright?" she continued, her voice almost a whisper now.

Sebastian paused, shaking as he finally kicked away the last of the tangled sheets. He stood, shaking as a figure opened the door and he saw... Cara? Yes... Cara.

Cara who wasn't in the Arena. The Arena for one, didn't have sheets that tangled his legs or beds. It didn't have the tiny light he kept on that wasn't truly a light to read or work by, but just a light that one could see with when waking at night. A light that could comfort those afraid of the dark... like him.

The question made him shake as he slowly came alive to the realization that he was safe. Better yet, that Hallie was safe and asleep. Perhaps suffering from her own nightmares, but certainly asleep. "Yeah," He managed in a low whisper. "I'm... I'm fine." The words were off somehow - not true. Or maybe that was just because Sebastian knew that this was wrong. He was a good liar, sure, but it was hard to lie well after waking up like that. It was even harder to lie when Sebastian wasn't so sure if he was lying to himself or lying to her.

What did he have to lie about? He had reason enough to have nightmares - to be terrified - ones beyond the simple traumas most children had. He'd been in the Arena. He had killed outside of the Arena. And now... he could almost feel the pressure of it mounting. It was only a matter of time before someone he cared about would be reaped - or two of them - or just slowly, very slowly, all of them. And he would fail them and as good as killed them.

Cara stared at Sebastian. Obviously not fine. And there was nothing she could do. Hopelessness choked her. Nothing she could do. She had tried to keep her distance from Sebastian for any number of reasons. Very good reasons really. So why did she suddenly feel so stung but the sight of him like this? She looked back towards the door. She should just leave...

"Do you want some hot chocolate?" she asked quietly, turning to look back towards him, shifting her weight slightly as she did so in a fit of nerves.

She didn't think before she made the offer, but hot chocolate was what her mom and dad made her when she was younger and woke up with nightmares. She didn't know why she made the offer suddenly to Sebastian. It was silly. It wouldn't help anything.

Sebastian paused and nodded carefully. "Uh, sure?" He wasn't sure what was with this household and believing that hot chocolate could fix everything regarding nightmares? Sebastian didn't know, really. It hadn't been a habit at the Blackwoods, but clearly it was one here. Judging that that had been Twist's reaction to Hallie's nightmare and now Cara...

Well, it wasn't like there was much else to be done. Better to do something, even a potentially useless something, than nothing at all, right?

Relazing a bit, she nodded, then darted out of the room. She didn't know if Sebastian would follow her or not, but she had to get out of the room. She didn't really like it in there. It was weird being in his room. It wasn't her space and she didn't belong there.

It was a short trip to the kitchen and she didn't bother turning a light on. It wasn't like she didn't know where everything was anyway. A kettle was quickly placed on the stove, and the small container with chocolate pulled down from its shelf. She paused at the mugs. Moving from foot to foot, she finally decided on two.

She wasn't having a great night either after all.

Sebastian paused for a moment before following Cara out to the kitchen. She had not turned on the light by the time he reached there. Considering that she was rummaging around for what was needed just fine, he assumed that she probably did not need the light itself. That was just fine, really. Sebastian didn't care if she did not need the light or not.

But he did.

He scrambled for a moment before flicking on a light in the kitchen. He squinted a little, blinking as his eyes adjusted to it.

"Sorry. I don't enjoy darkness." It did not bring the nightmares, but it did bring him flashbacks - and tension - and an inability to sleep. Sometimes, just sometimes, even closing his eyes was a bad idea.

Cara jumped. She actually let go of one of the mugs she was holding for a moment but grabbed it before it could hit the floor. A little shakier for the surprise, she tried for a smile. It didn't quiet make it, but it was an almost smile and that would have to be enough.

"S'okay," she murmured. She looked away from Sebastian and back to the mugs, quickly dishing out the chocolate.

And then there was nothing left to do until the hot water boiled. Moving back so she could lean on a cabinet, her hands crossed behind her back, she reluctantly turned her attention back towards her adopted family member. Didn't like the darkness. Because of...

She looked away. She hadn't wanted him to come home. Shivering at her cowardice and guilt, she spoke without thinking.

"You don't sleep well. Every night almost." She spoke quietly, stating the words as facts instead of making them questions, her eyes trained on the kettle.

Sebastian nodded, almost zombie-like. Half of the house (or, at least, of the humans) had problems sleeping, it seemed. Between Twist, Hallie, Cara, and himself, they could probably run an all-night zoo. "Twist says the nightmares will get better with time." Just slowly - very slowly. Maybe whenever Hallie and Mad and everyone that he cared about that could be reaped ended up escaping their ages of being reaped... Whenever they all reached nineteen and escaped into the freedom of adulthood, it would be all right.

"If only that could happen faster." He murmured softly, although he wasn't sure to whom he was speaking to on that matter in particular. He rubbed at his eyes a little, sighing after a moment. "But time machines aren't sold by the Capitol, unfortunately." He didn't know what he would do with one. Go forward in time - to see what happened with everyone he cared about that was younger than nineteen now? Or to go back - to see Orsino's smiling face again?

He was moving on from the latter, he could feel it in his gut, but he wasn't sure that that was a good thing.

Cara's eyebrows furrowed. Get better eventually? But then what if they forgot? That was when it would happen. When the sickness...or something...would get them. She'd thought it was just a bus ride. She'd been complacent. And then everyone was dead and...her hands clenched behind her. Those nightmares couldn't fade. They had to stay strong. So they remembered. So they were on guard.

"They might get better but they'll never go away," she said. She walked towards the kettle, uneasy and needing a distraction. She tapped the side with one hand. Still not warm enough. 'They can't go away."

And what would be the use of a time machine anyway? Cara wanted to be on guard but did she really want to see what the future held? It couldn't anything good could it?

Sebastian chuckled. "No, they can't go away because the dreams are memories - or, worse, they are memories that may yet become real." Sure, he wouldn't ever string up Hallie in a tree - catch her in a snare, snap her leg, and shoot her down with arrows... But he as good as drew attention to her for the Capitol so that someone else might give her a death like this... or a worse one.

"I can just get used to them." He managed with a grin. Just as he was getting used to the fact that Orsino was dead - that nothing would bring him back from his grave - and that it was better to just move forward with life. It didn't mean he loved the man any less than he did six months ago. It just meant that he learned that feelings might be immortal, but people weren't and no amount of blood spilled could change that. "And that happens, I know it does."

Yes. Get used to them. She'd done that. Gotten used to the strange hallucinations when she saw someone as dead and alive at the same time. This was their real face. But it could become flushed and bloated like this. It could half be gone, eaten by giant lizards. It could be charred. It could be covered in moss face down in the muck. Maybe one day it would be.

Memories that may yet become real.

"I have memories like that. Memories that aren't real yet," she felt exposed sharing that. But she'd never heard anyone say it like that before. That was how it FELT though. Its just a dream, its just a nightmare. But it wasn't. It was something that could happen. Something that, deep in her heart, she knew WOULD happen. The minute she looked away. The minute she blinked.

"What memories do you have that aren't real yet?" she asked, greatly daring and looking at him with terrified curiosity.

He paused at the question before finally coming to an accurate phrase. "People I care about are Reaped and I'm killing them in the Arena." Usually... usually it was Hallie. Sometimes it was Madd - very occasionally Cara or Xavier too. Sometimes this ranged into the impossible area - like Twist or Krieger or Orsino. And he knew he couldn't go to the arena again - not after he turned nineteen, really. Unless he was sent back during the next Quell, but that was another twenty years in the future.

"Not that I would do it, I just..." He sighed as he braced his hands against the kitchen counter top. There was no riddle as to what this meant. It was obvious. He knew he was putting them in danger. He knew that they would be the ones that the Capitol would punish him with. They couldn't have liked that he went to the Games and survived as someone from a lower district. "It means something else, doesn't make the images any less... nightmarish." He explained carefully.

Killing them? Cara didn't know what to say. Even as far as metaphors went that one was pretty terrifying. She usually found people dead and couldn't save them in her memory nightmares. Doing the killing herself...

If you are the reason they are dead...isn't that just like killing them yourself?

He was saying if someone in their family was killed it would be his fault. Would it be his fault? For living? For not dying? What about me. I didn't die. Should I have died? It had been an accident they said. But everyone else was dead. Maybe that was punishment enough?

the kettle went off and Cara leaped forward, eager to make the sound stop. It was barely a whistle but she knew it would get louder. Switching off the stove, she set the kettle to the side. She paused. Wait for it to cool down and then pour...no. She began to poor the hot water into the chocolate mixture in the mug closest to her.

Maybe she should say something comforting. Like maybe they wouldn't be Reaped. But there was no way of knowing that. And she hated when people told her things were going to be okay when they wouldn't.

"Can you grab spoons from over there," she said instead. Her hand wasn't shaking as she poured, which was a good sign, she thought.

Sebastian shuffled in the drawers and took out two spoons, handing one off to Cara. He could stir his own pretty well - Sebastian wasn't concerned about that much.

"I should just find friends who are older than eighteen. Then at least I won't have to worry about this." But he couldn't help it that Hallie was younger. Nor could he help it that Madd was younger too - nor could he help the strange emotions surrounding the other boy either. Or, no, not strange. He knew what they were - he just didn't know if he should act on them or not. And Xavier and Cara? They were still nothing to be helped either.

If only they were all already older, then maybe he wouldn't have to worry about all of this.
