• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Maddox stood on the back stoop of Sebastian's house, his ear pressed to the door. Nope, he was pretty sure there was nobody home. There weren't any lights on, and there wasn't any movement or any noise...Seb was out, he was almost positive. Which was good, because his lock-picking, cake-balancing skills were pretty rusty.

The surprise Games were over, and Madd knew the Games made Seb feel about as great as a boot in the face. He was back now, with no new Victor, which was like a steel-toed boot on top of it all. And it had been his birthday, and they had all missed it.

Madd remembered--not because he was good at remembering birthdays, but because one of the TV announcers had mentioned it. Still, Seb didn't have to know that. After all, he'd gone to a lot of damn trouble to figure out how to make a birthday cake--and the thought was what counted, right?

Madd looped the string holding the cake box around his wrist so he could use both hands to try to pick the lock. But he had only just started wiggling the screwdriver in the lock when the doorknob turned--it was open. Weird. But then, it was the back door--and really, who was going to break into a Champion's house, out here where everyone would see? In broad daylight? Madd could understand not needing to lock everything, perhaps, when you could simply replace whatever you wanted.

So he gave the door a gentle nudge, picking up the cake box as he did so, and stepped into the house, trying not to make a sound.

Sebastian had been staying at the Arcadias more now, mostly because Hallie was there with Twist and, for the second time in his life, she was officially his sister again as opposed to something they remembered but was not quite on paper ever since the Blackwoods had disowned him.

Still, that Victor's house was a busy place. Sure, he liked everyone there. They were a good family to have fallen into, honestly... But sometimes, he just wanted to be alone. So he wandered here, back into this odd little house. It was notably a lot smaller than the Victor Mansion, but it was still pretty big for one person. He could have easily fit three other people here without much of an issue.

It was a good place to just go to for a few days when he wanted to be alone. This was one of those times.

Naturally, it didn't look very lived in, but there wasn't much that Sebastian could do about that. It was still light out enough that having the light on wasn't even needed.

He was simply down the hall in what would have been his room had he been staying here and he heard an odd sort of creak. He paused a little. It was still light out enough that none of the lights were on, so he couldn't judge a shadow going across the hallway floor from looking at it... Sebastian moved to press his hand against one of the knives that lined up the holster he wore under his shirt and he eased a little towards the door.

He figured it was possible he had someone trying to steal from him, but it wasn't like there was all that much valuable here. There wasn't much food in the cupboards - just a few non-perishable things he kept there for when he did decide to stay the night. Anything worth selling was at the Arcadias, really, but he remembered from being a thief himself that sometimes even the littlest things could be worth quite a lot of money if you found the right person to buy it off you.

He eased slowly up towards the door, which was slightly open. He curled into the corner behind the door, hand on the knife as he listened carefully to movement outside.

Madd breathed a sigh of relief upon entering the empty house. It was silent and all the lights were off; Sebastian was obviously not home. He was probably at the Arcadias',where he spent a lot of his time--most of it, if Madd was correct. But sneaking into the Arcadias' and setting up a surprise party was a joke; nothing in there went unnoticed. Too many eyes.

Madd let the door bang closed behind him and wandered into the kitchen. It was pretty bare, all things considered, but Seb spent a lot of his time elsewhere. And he wasn't exactly a chef or anything, so maybe he didn't need a lot of kitchen stuff. He had a table, anyway, and that was the main thing.

Madd moved towards the table to set the cake down, not noticing that at some point, his shoelace had become untied. Just as he reached out to set the box on the table, he stepped on his own shoelace and tripped, fumbling with the cake and dropping the box on the floor as he came crashing down after it.

Sebastian withdrew his knife from the throwing holster that lined his chest, hidden under his open jacket. He eased slowly along the floor after the figure passed the hallway door. He caught a glimpse of the figure - of blond hair and a somewhat scrawny figure, if a bit taller than him... but it wasn't like Sebastian was the tallest kid on the playground in the first place anyway.

Thankful for his soft-soled sneakers, Sebastian managed to ease up rather easily up the hallway, pressing his back closely to the wall as he carefully followed the boy to seemingly the kitchen. An odd place to go, but it was possible that the boy didn't stake this out before? Certainly anyway.

He clutched the throwing knife in his hand, thinking carefully that he didn't want to kill another person - not if he could help it. In self-defense, they would probably not punish him... But that wasn't what made him hesitate. He had killed before without knowing the full story... And perhaps that person had killed someone he knew - had kidnapped a Victor - had done a lot of questionable things to make her less than desirable of a person. But that didn't make it okay for him to have killed her. He understood why she had done what she did, even if it wasn't the right way to do that.

But it wasn't like his moral compass was all that great either. He was still alive because it wasn't after all.

So even as there was a harsh, thudding sound of something dropping, Sebastian moved quickly, throwing the knife. It met a thud against wood.

He had missed on purpose.

And it was only now, really, that he realized that he recognized the back of the intruder's body, but he wasn't entirely sure from where or if it was a trick of the very much lack of light.

Madd let out a frustrated sigh as he sat up, kicking his offending, shoelace-flapping foot off to the side. Of course, of all the times to trip like an idiot, it had to be when he was carrying a cake. A damn cake that had taken forever to make. Now, it probably looked a lot more like it had before it had gone in the oven.

Annoyed at himself, Madd started to reach for the cake box--only to be startled by a sudden thud, like something hitting wood nearby. He jerked his hand back and looked around; it couldn't have been the cake, as that had already fallen. Could he have knocked something else out of place? Was it perhaps just the house settling?

He looked back over towards the box, only to catch sight of a knife handle sticking out of the floor a few feet away from the box. A throwing knife handle. Madd wasn't exactly a weapons expert, but he had seen enough on television to know what some of the more common ones looked like. And he happened to know that Sebastian favored these kinds of knives.

Well, that was two things ruined. Apparently he was terrible at cakes and surprises.

"Hello?" Madd called experimentally, glancing behind him in the direction he assumed the knife had come from. "Er--I'm not armed. Or a burglar. No need for more knives."

It was the voice that placed the familiarity into something from the coincidental and mildly weird to the area that Sebastian would like to call 'being too jumpy, even with the completely valid and real explanation of his experiences in an Arena.'

"Madd, sneaking into my house is about the first and last bad idea you can have." He commented as he moved around him and tugged the knife free from the cabinet door. "And what the hell are you even doing here?" He wasn't here often, really... Granted, this was only a more recent development as it was after Hallie had been formally changed into being an Arcadia and thus needed to live with Twist and the rest - so he lived with them to be part of the family.

Sebastian flicked a light on before stowing the throwing knife back into the holster that he wore under his jacket.

Maddox gave a sheepish nod as Sebastian came into the kitchen, rightfully admonishing him for sneaking into the house. He knew it probably wasn't the best idea, but he had thought Seb wouldn't be at home...clearly, that was false.

"Yeah, I...thought you were at the Arcadias'," he said, reaching for his shoe to tie up the offending lace. "Guess I should've known, when the door was unlocked, huh?"

He glanced at the box that had fallen to the floor and winced at Sebastian's query. "That's a good question," he said, turning red at the ears; not only was he terrible at planning surprises, but now he had to explain how terrible.

He reached for the box and opened the lid a bit with his fingers; the cake was definitely splattered, and a little misshapen, but it still looked mostly like a cake. He stood up and held it out rather awkwardly towards Sebastian.

"Um...happy late birthday?"

Sebastian felt a tiny grin creep on his lips as he assessed Mad for the moment, barely able to keep himself from laughing. The boy looked embarrassed and apologetic, but he didn't care much about that as he moved over to take the box from him and place it on the table.

"You need to stop being adorable. It's starting to make me feel terrible." It made him want to do something that he hadn't for a long time, but he also felt was... inappropriate. Given himself. Given Madd. Given the circumstances.

Hell, it was bad to have said anything at all, but words could not be taken back. He could only hope Madd perhaps didn't ask why it made him feel terrible. He moved over to grab a few plates from a cupboard and then started looking for some silverware. He knew there was some here - in case he was staying here for long enough that eating food was required.

Madd wrinkled his nose; he could feel his ears burning red, and he gratefully shoved his hands in his pockets as Sebastian took the cake box from him, only to pull a hand back out to rub at his nose, as if he were about to sneeze or something.

"You sound like my mom," he said, a tad embarrassed; should he not have made the cake if he wasn't going to do the thing properly? He had thought he was being...thoughtful. Conscientious, really, by trying to cheer up a presumably dismayed Sebastian. But this was not going exactly as he had imagined it would--and now he was adorable, like a puppy, with his inability to properly do anything.

"And it's the cake that'll probably make you feel terrible," he added. "I followed the recipe and stuff, but I don't really...bake and all. And it got kind of smushed, too."

Sebastian chuckled at the thought. "Well, your mother and I probably feel terrible for vastly different reasons... or I hope she does, anyway. Not very much of a mother figure if we're feeling bad for the same reasons." He observed, dancing around the idea unknowingly and, mentally, shoving these ideas out of his brain as he put the plates on the table and rummaged around for the silverware drawer.

"I doubt the cake being physically damaged should hurt. Something that looks terrible can still be good, last I checked." He added with a shrug. He cut into the cake carefully, cutting off a small slice and putting it onto a plate. He handed it to Maddox. "Still, you're having some with me. If it's that bad, we can suffer together."

Madd wasn't so sure what Sebastian was talking about--feeling terrible? His mom? He shook his head, as if to clear it, and then moved over to lean against the counter while Sebastian opened up the cake box, wincing as he caught sight of it. It really didn't look super great. As if it had to begin with.

"Yeah, all right," he said, graciously taking the slice of cake Sebastian offered him. He poked at it curiously with a fork; he wasn't so sure it was cooked all the way, but cookie dough was good, so some cake dough stuff would be all right, wouldn't it?

"No point eating birthday cake on your own, anyway," he said, finally loading a bite onto his fork. He held it up, almost as if to say cheers, then stuck the fork in his mouth.

Chewing thoughtfully, Madd pulled a face, then swallowed. "Yeah," he said. "I think I'll stick to farming. But it's not poison, at least. The frosting's pretty good...though...I guess maybe I shouldn't have put nuts in there. Kind of crunchy in weird places."

Sebastian cut his own piece and took a bite of it even as Madd spoke. Not terrible - a little mushy in places and it had an odd sort of crunch in one bit and...

He paused, eyes growing wide as he listened to the boy speak before quickly getting up. He spat out what was in his mouth into a trash can before rummaging in the cabinets again to get a mug, which he filled with water. He took large sips of water, which he spat out into the drain, as if washing his mouth. He did this several times before finally stopping.

"Sorry." He heaved after a moment, scratching the back of his neck. "I may or may not be allergic to nuts." He felt bad, really. It wasn't that it tasted bad and Madd was just... just trying to be nice. He was just trying to be a good friend - he had just no idea about his allergies, which wasn't something that he could be blamed for, really.

Madd prodded his cake, as if considering taking another bite, and glanced up at Sebastian with a sheepish grin, waiting for his friend's reaction. A grimace, he expected--a good deal of teasing, he probably deserved. But his eyes widened as Sebastian dropped his plate and raced for the trash can, spitting the cake into the garbage before hastily chugging down--no, rinsing his mouth--with tap water.

For a moment, Madd just stood there, mouth agape, unable to figure out what was going on. For a split second, he thought Sebastian was trying to be funny, and he gave a uncomfortable sort of laugh, a half-hearted joke on the tip of his tongue--Was it really that terrible?--but then Sebastian turned around and explained, and Madd could feel the blood drain from his face.

"Shit, holy--I didn't know, I'm sorry, I wouldn't've--if I'd...you know," he stammered, dropping his fork onto the floor and scrambling awkwardly to pick it up and set it on the counter. "Holy crap, what if you'd--did you swallow any of that? Should we...run to the doctor or something? Shit, it's in the air now--do you break out if you breathe it? Quick, just hold your breath and go outside, I'll get rid of it."

Madd made a clumsy dive for the cake box, squashing the lid down over it, not caring this time if he squished the cake or not. At least it wasn't as if he were ruining a masterpiece.

Sebastian paused, catching Madd on the arm quickly. A grin broke across his lips and he shook his head, mostly to himself as he tried to keep the laughter from bubbling up too much. He didn't want to see like he was laughing at the boy - because he wasn't. Not really. He was just... rather funny, even if what would have happened had he swallowed the nuts been about the exact opposite of funny.

"That isn't how this kind of allergy works. As long as I didn't eat any, I'm fine." If he did, in a matter of hours, he would probably be throwing up in a matter of hours. "It should be fine, all right?" He said, most or less hoping that Madd would calm down a little, if anything.

Madd was pretty sure this whole idea had been terrible, that something simple had turned disastrous--but Sebastian caught his arm, and he looked like he was trying not to laugh. That, or he was choking.

No, it was the former. So, apparently, his allergy wasn't so horribly bad--even if Madd hadn't been aware of it. Not that it made him feel much better; he only felt, if anything, slightly more foolish, though, as usual, he didn't much mind looking like the foolish one, as long as everybody was pleased.

"Yeah, okay," Madd said, relaxing a bit. The cake-tossing could wait, for now. "You sure you shouldn't go like...brush your teeth or something, though? Do you have a toothbrush here, even?" He glanced around; the place wasn't bare, per se, but it was easy to see somebody wasn't living here on a daily basis.

"What are you doing here, anyway?" he asked off-handedly. "I figured you'd be at the Arcadias', that I'd have to trick you into coming to find your own damn cake."
