• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Mina turned onto the street where she lived, picking up the pace a bit. It was cold out today, colder than she'd anticipated when she left, and halfway out to the woods, she'd regretted not putting on gloves or another few shirts or so. Her jackets was thin and threadbare, and she had been hoping that it was a spring sort of day out. But that hadn't been the case, and by the time she'd gotten to her traps to try and reset them, her fingers were practically numb. It had taken her far longer than usual to get everything reset, to get the animals she had caught securely in her hands and then into her game bag; she'd nearly lost a good-sized rabbit because she couldn't hang on to it. Next time, she was over-dressing, for sure, no matter how brightly the sun was shining.

She broke into a jog when the house she shared with her brother came into view, only a few hundred yards away. The first thing she was doing was putting on some tea--she needed it. But as she drew closer, she slowed down. Something was weird. The thin blankets that served as makeshift curtains were drawn inside the house--she was sure she had left them open. The window that let everyone and anyone peer straight into their two-room home was their only source of light--she wouldn't have closed it off. And the door...the door was slightly ajar. Now, she knew she had closed that. She always did--and locked it, even though there wasn't much inside that anyone would want to steal. Except--her heart leapt as she remembered that there was money, shoved into a jar and stowed away secretly under a floorboard beneath her bed. She'd been hiding it from Bastian because she didn't want him to know it came from the business she ran with Jill at the black market. But now that she was a regular there, what if someone had decided to see if they could profit from what she made?

She shoved the door the rest of the way open and stepped into the house, glancing around frantically. All seemed to be in order...but had she pushed in those chairs at the kitchen table? She couldn't seem to remember anything she had done now. She dropped her game bag on the ground by the door, stepping hesitantly into the house. Perhaps, she told herself, it's just that Bastian was home. Maybe he was in their room, trying to sleep...maybe that's why he'd drawn the curtains. But somehow, she didn't think so--he wouldn't have left the door ajar, either.

"Bas?" she called hesitantly, hoping against all odds he would answer. "Are you home?"

It was another average day in the Slums of District 12 for Vanessa. Ignoring the warnings her stomach was giving her that it needed food. She had gotten good at surviving on little to no food at all. She could go a few weeks without meals. Granted, she usually was about ready to collapse at the end of the weeks, but she would be alive, nonetheless.

Sitting outside in the dirt, with her worn coat that used to belong to her mother wrapped securely around her, protecting her from the frost-bitten air, Vanessa watched. She watched the world around her. It was a lazy day for her. She had nothing to trade, and she couldn't go out and hunt. Her father was out trying to trade, and Vanessa wasn't about to leave her sister alone.

Due to her observant streak, Vanessa noticed a distressed girl. It was the norm in District 12 to mind your own business. When you and your family are starving, why bother with other people? No matter how horrible it was, it was simply how they had all learned to survive. But this wasn't about food, at least not at the current moment. The girl seemed emotionally distressed. Picking her lean body up off the dirt, Vanessa walked over to the house the girl had entered. "Hello?" she called out, peering inside. "Are you alright? You seemed really upset?" Definitely an uncouth thing to do - peer into someone's house, but Vanessa didn't really care. If the girl had an issue with a neighbor trying to be friendly to a neighbor, then Vanessa would go back to the old way of life. The one where she didn't even stop to acknowledge others' existence. The way District 12 liked it.

Mina waited, but there was no answer to her question. She barely dared to move, but after nearly a full minute of standing and waiting, she figured there must not be anyone in the house--if there had been an intruder in the first place--who wanted to attack her. She stepped lightly into the bedroom, but upon first glance, there wasn't anyone there. Perhaps Bastian had been home, she comforted herself, and had left in a hurry. Though where he could be going so hastily that he forgot to even close the door baffled her.

She was about to check under her bed and make sure her hard-earned and ill-gotten money was safe when she heard someone come into the house. Her heart began hammering in her chest--it was another thief! Or the first, come back to do her in and take what they could! Granted, it wasn't much, but it was still money, and that was something.

Mina knew the only way she could avoid an attacker was to flee the way she'd come in--there were no windows in the bedroom, and she was quick enough that she might just get away. But then the voice called out--and it sounded...friendly? And really, would a thief announce her presence? Mina knew she certainly didn't.

She poked her head out from the bedroom cautiously and saw a girl there, about her own age. Her brow furrowed in confusion; she was fairly sure she didn't know the girl, but perhaps they went to school together. Mina skipped so frequently now that she wouldn't have been able to recall a single lesson if asked, much less the identity of a classmate.

"Um...yeah," she said, confusion still evident in her voice. "I...I think someone's been in here, but I can't be sure...it might have been my brother." She eyed the girl suspiciously, wondering. Would a thief be smart enough to come back and pretend to be concerned? Or was the girl just trying to be a good neighbor? Mina hadn't thought such a thing existed in the slums, but there was always the faint possibility.

Based on the girl's facial expression, Vanessa could tell that she was surprised by her presence, especially considered Vanessa was acting in a friendly, warm fashion. Did she think Vanessa was a thief? Vanessa would never steal, unless it was a last resort and was to make sure her family was alright. Her family came first, no matter what. It came before her own hunger and her own health.

Vanessa vaguely recognized the girl. She could swear she'd seen her face at least once or twice before, but school was probably the least likely of places. Maybe it was at the black market, or simply passing each other in the streets as they went about their own business. Vanessa wasn't positive. If she wanted to know, all she had to do was ask, right? "I'm Vanessa, by the way,," she said, her tone still sweet.

"Is anything missing?" Vanessa asked with genuine concern. She understood what it was like to lose things that meant something to you, and in District 12, even the smallest, trivial possessions were the most valuable things someone could have. Vanessa offered her a warm smile. Perhaps her neighborly friendliness would brighten her day? It was so rare to find neighbors who cared about each other now, or were at least amiable towards one another.

((Sorry it took so long to respond!))

Mina gave the girl a faint, suspicious smile as she introduced herself. Vanessa...the name rang a bell. Surely, she wasn't here to steal? If so, she could have tried to knock Mina out already and run off with the money under the floorboards. As it was, she wasn't about to give away that hiding spot, so she took a step towards the girl, away from the bed, trying to appear casual and suddenly friendly, as though her suspicions has evaporated.

"I don't think so," she said in response to the girl's question. "It's not like there's a lot to take anyway," she added wryly with a shrug. "But I was just worried maybe someone was waiting to...I dunno. Attack. Stupid, right?"

She shifted awkwardly from one foot to the other, a nervous habit she had picked up because of her weak ankle; she was constantly moving from one foot to the other whenever she was supposed to be standing still. "I'm Mina, by the way," she said. "I think...do we go to school together? Or have I seen you somewhere else?" She wondered vaguely if the girl was another of the frequent visitors to the black market--maybe even to her stand with Jill? She was unsure; they were seeing so many customers now, it was getting hard to keep track.

"Not really," Vanessa said, offering the girl a small smile. "It's not like people are exactly trustworthy when they are as desperate as we are." Truthfully, Vanessa wouldn't blame her for knocking her out. If Vanessa thought her family was threatened she would have been prepared to do the same thing to anyone she considered an intruder. (Even though there was no malicious intent in Vanessa checking up on the girl.)

Vanessa nodded. "I think that sounds about right," Vanessa agreed. She wasn't going to mention the Black Market, just because it was not something smart to speak of outside of the market, or even in general. Perhaps she had seen Mina there, but she didn't know for sure. She was not going to ask so she could find out for sure. Though impulsive, she wasn't stupid.
