Mina sighed heavily as she shifted her bag from one shoulder to the other. She was getting closer to home--she knew it, she recognized the copse of trees just in front of her. A few hundred yards, and she'd be at the hole in the fence, and then just a few minutes from home, at last. It had been perhaps one of the longest days she had had in quite a while. Luckily for her, Bastian was at work, and she was crossing her fingers he still would be when she got back. She wasn't quite sure what time it was, but the sun hadn't yet started to set, so it couldn't be too terribly late. She would make it home in time for dinner, for sure.

She hadn't realized, when she got off the bus in the wild lands between Districts 11 and 12, that it would be quite a hike back home. She had seriously underestimated the speed at which the bus could travel, having only been on it once before, with Bellona, and had been overly cautious about getting caught anyway. She'd gotten off too early and ended up walking for almost four hours to get back to the familiar woods she was hiking through now. But better safe than sorry, of course.

It was her brother's fault, really. If he hadn't wanted to volunteer for the Games, she'd never have suggested they train, and if they weren't training, she wouldn't need the sort of things she'd gone looking for. No one in twelve had nice running shoes or weights to lift--they lifted enough weights every day in the mines. They didn't need to spend time exercising. And Careers were so few and far between as to practically be unheard of, so there were no centers for training, no fitness arenas. Mina had had to take the bus all the way to six to even find the kind of wealth necessary to own those sorts of things--much less to throw them out. It hadn't taken long to get there, but it had taken forever to scrounge around and find the things she wanted. She'd taken a few pairs of shoes off of back porches, where it was uncertain if they were left out to save the interiors of the houses or to be thrown away. Either way, she didn't feel all that bad about it. And in one little garden shed, she'd found a whole set of hand weights and some rubber contraption--she had no idea what it was for, but she figured her brother might. And she'd only taken a few of the hand weights, not enough to really make it criminal, hopefully.

All that was fine and dandy until she had to lug it through the woods for four hours. She hadn't wanted to draw attention to herself by getting off the bus in the Square--she'd already skipped school and spent the spare change she'd been saving for weeks on the stupid bus fare. She didn't need everyone asking her what was in the bag. So she'd decided to come home through the woods, where there wouldn't be anyone to take note or ask questions or wonder what a girl from the slums was doing on the bus from six.

Mina couldn't help sighing with relief as she spotted the fence. Finally, she was nearly home. She switched her bag over again and made a beeline straight for the loose wire--only to stop suddenly, her heart hammering in her chest. Out of the corner of her eye, she'd seen something, a movement, the swing of an arm. Panicked, she flattened herself against the nearest tree--as if that would really hide her. What was she thinking, coming home through the woods? If she was caught now, not only was she a thief, but she was trespassing on illegal property, as her brother had warned her a thousand times over. Cursing silently to herself, Mina stayed glued to the tree trunk, hoping against all odds that if there was another person out there in the woods, that it wasn't a Peacekeeper.

It was supposed to have been a relaxing day, at least that was what Jill had hoped for. But these hopes were crushed quickly when Jill went over to the black market and they made her go to various different districts. From stealing pearls in district four, to various medicines in district six. Of course she had a few pit stops along the way for other customers that would pay her as well.

First Jill started off with what was needed, which was located in district four, and district six. Using some money that she had set aside helped speed up the process of getting to the various districts, but once there the new task was getting her hands on the various items. District four was a beautiful district just due to the location, which was right next to the beach. All Jill really had to do to get a few a pearls was locate the pearl divers boat, who were on break and open a few.....dozen clams herself until she had a couple of pearls. She then quickly left the boating docks putting what she had now taken in her small bag.

Next stop, District six. Getting your hand on various medicine's in general is difficult, unless your someone in capitol which is why they are so prized in the Black Market. Jill had to wait until a lab was emptied for a lunch break and then she slipped in threw a window and grabbed the various medicine's that were listed she would need. She was now done with the requirement's of the black Market, and it was growing late. Earlier there had been a few other places that Jill would have liked to go, but now she had run out of time so she would have to wait for another day.

Since the day had passed faster then Jill had expected it too, she had to now head home to the Slums of District 12. Being too lazy to use up more money for public transportation, Jill just took various short cuts that in the end led to the forest. It was there that she saw someone else towards the outskirts...who was....hiding from her? A small laugh escaped her lips as a smile began to form. She was far from a peacemaker.

Mina was still pressed up against the tree, her heart hammering loudly in her chest, when she heard it. A distinctive sound, coming from the person she had spotted: laughter. Sure, it was short and not exactly booming, but it was unmistakably laughter. Mina wavered for a moment--would a Peacekeeper really laugh at her? Or would they just point a gun in her face? And...it had sounded like a woman. She couldn't even recall if there were any female Peacekeepers in 12...

After a moment of hesitation, Mina stepped out from behind the tree and saw who it was she was really hiding from--a girl, probably not much older than herself, who also seemed to be heading for that handy hole in the electrical fence that led straight back to the slums of District 12. Mina would have been suspicious, but since she'd started spend time in the woods, she'd met more than her fair share of people who were out here doing the same thing she was--just trying to survive, to get by on what they could hunt or scavenge, to find a secret way into another district where they might be able to get what they needed. These woods were the underground railroad for the poor and starving, and yet, not once had she seen anyone in law enforcement trying to stop any of them. That didn't mean she wasn't still terrified of getting caught, but once she met up with a person who looked like they weren't a Peacekeeper, it was safe to assume they truly weren't out there undercover trying to catch her red-handed.

"Hey," Mina said casually. "Sorry, you just startled me. I was just...you know..." She nodded in the direction of the broken fence. "Heading home for the day."

The women was spooked by her presence at first, but Jill couldn't blame her...she would have been a bit spooked too if she thought a peacemaker was following her. Probably wouldn't have hidden, but still would have gotten spooked. Once the girl seemed to know it was same, she retreated from her hiding spot. So now Jill had a full view of the women now.

The girl couldn't be to much younger then her, and from the direction she was heading...it was obvious she was also from District 12. The girl was also just heading home as Jill was, but you couldn't help the curiosity that over came you when meeting someone else in the forest. It was almost just like the black market within the forest, except there was no one to regulate it said trades.

The girl spoke to Jill in a calm manner as though she needed to explain her actions. It was entertaining to say the least, so Jill smiled a bit. "Same" Jill responded softly as she continued walking slightly towards the fence. "Well actually heading to the Black Market then back out again." Jill shrugged when finally reaching the fence. She then slipped threw the whole and awaited the women to respond.

Mina was a bit surprised to hear the girl say so blatantly that she was on her way to the black market. She had thought that when you traded there, it was something to be kept quiet, not flaunted. But this was the second time that she'd run into someone who hadn't even tried to keep it a secret. She supposed it made sense, since the girl was also illegally in the woods, and it was assumed that since Mina was also trespassing, she wasn't one to go running to the Peacekeepers and inform. If she was going to pull of this whole life-of-crime routine she had going on, she badly needed to learn the etiquette.

Since the girl paused on the other side of the fence, Mina assumed she was waiting for her to follow, so she ducked under the wire, making sure her bag didn't catch on it, and popped up on the legal side of District 12.

"So, are you buying or selling? At the market, I mean," Mina asked casually, hoping she didn't sound like a total idiot. She had yet to make her first foray into the black market, though she'd been planning to for a while. Just as soon as she had time and something of value to sell. A handful of berries wasn't exactly going to do her a lot of good, and the sack she was carrying now wasn't for sale. She was hoping the girl was selling something interesting, perhaps something she could copy if worse came to worse.

Jill wasn't typically this...Kind you could say to strangers she had just met, especially towards females but she had someone to talk to who wasn't a goody goody so it was all good. Her bag was filled with some goods for the Black Market, at least enough for a decent meal for the week, and some left over to put to the side for training and such. Jill just preferred the Black Market over the mines, but she worked the mines when she had to.

The girls next question was also just as amusing to Jill as the previous questions. "Definitely selling," Jill continued walking once the girl had joined along. She seemed new on the concept on the Black Market still, so Jill decided why not enlighten someone else on it...and what better way than inviting the girl along. "Would you like to come with? You seem fairly new to the concept of the Black Market and all still," Jill smiled and looked at the houses growing slightly larger as they came closer to them, "A good learning experience" She mused softly.

Everyone looked down at the concept of working at the Black Market, but it actually made more money then higher class jobs. Well depending how good you were at what you did, such as collecting and selling to the proper people.

Mina walked alongside the girl, since it looked like they were both headed in the same direction. She had anticipated the other girl's answer--who would go to the black market to buy things, but live in the slums? It was the wealthier residents who did the buying, or so she assumed, having only ever passed it by and never really been inside. She was still tiptoeing around the edge of that particular treachery, but she knew she'd head in sooner or later. She just had to have to right stuff to sell.

She shifted her bag from one shoulder to the other--it was getting heavier by the second, now that she was so close to home--and considered the girl's offer. "I'd like to," she said hesitantly. "But...I don't really have anything to sell."

Mina paused for a moment, considering. Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to pop by the marketplace, even if she didn't have anything to sell. She could look around and sort of get the feel of the place before she really started doing business there. A scouting mission of sorts.

"Ok, let's just go," she said, making up her mind suddenly. "I've never been in. But d'you mind if I drop this bag off at home first?" She hitched it up further on her shoulder. "It's really heavy. Oh," she added on second thought, realizing she didn't even know the name of the girl she was going on illegal adventures with. "I'm Mina, by the way."

The girl obviously came out of her shell more and more by the way she was more comfortable speaking to Jill. At first she denied Jill's offer to see the Black Market, which Jill had predicted. Many avoided the Black Market for is typical sense of danger and natural nature of trouble, but that's just what drew Jill towards it. Then it seemed the very next moment, she changed her mind to join Jill at the Black Market. The girl's decisions were fairly inconsistent but Jill didn't mind one bit, rather have the company then go by herself anyways.

"Don't mind one bit." Jill shrugged slightly and backed off slightly from her previously faster pace, allowing the girl to take the lead. "Lead the way." Soon they entered the slums of district twelve, which to the naked eye, was less then pleasing. Each house slightly slanted forward and smaller then the last. It was sad how low capitol allowed district twelve citizens to live, but she expect that they just hoped they would pass away with the unsanitary conditions.

"I'm Mina, by the way." The girl finally gave a name to go with her face.

"Jill, the names Jill. I guess it would help to know each others names if we are going to break a few laws here and there." Giving a soft smile, Jill responded to the girl, whose name she now knew was Mina.

Mina smiled; it was nice to have someone to break laws with...somehow, she felt like it made her less accountable, like certainly if two people were doing something illegal, they couldn't get in trouble, whereas a lone lawbreaker...well, that was just risky. No more risky than two or three, she knew, but that old adage 'safety in numbers' gave her some sense of security, however false.

"It's just right here," she said, nodding towards the tiny house she shared with her brother, right on the main, most crowded road of the slums. She had long since gotten over being embarrassed of people seeing their house; she and Bastian had built this place with their own hands, after all, and that was nothing to be ashamed of, no matter how ramshackle a place it was.

Mina veered off the road and scampered over the curb to their front door. It was unlocked, which meant her brother was home from work already; she poked her head in, but the main room was empty. He must have been asleep--she was lucky. He'd probably nap at least an hour, plenty of time for her to make it to the black market and back. She dropped the bag as gently as she could on the floor just inside the house and closed the door quietly, turning back to the girl she'd left in the street with a sheepish grin.

"Ok," she said, shoving her hands in her pockets. "I'm good. My brother's asleep, so I've got like, an hour, tops."

When Mina returned and spoke of how much time she would have left until she needed to be home, it brought a very sly smile to Jill's face. If she was trying to be a smart ass she would have said something about the girl having a curfew, but this wasn't her goal today, instead she was attempting to get along with someone else....So all she did was nod.

Since their time was limited Jill then quickly turned around and then began walking in the direction of the Black Market, which she knew like it was her second home. Each house seemed a bit more like the last as the inched forwards and looked as though they were thrown together. But of course, if you were one who was lived and raised here like Mina and Jill, you knew better then the houses being duplicates. Each house was an original of the families own hard work and blood, showing their compassion to survive as human beings.

Within about five minutes they had finally reached the shady looking region known as the Black Market. But Jill did not stop the constant pace of her walk just yet. The man she was looking for would be in the center of the market so she had to find him before he left for the day. Business first, then she would wander around. After a few moments of searching Jill finally located the tall and musky looking man that she associated most of her Black Market business with. Typically she would bargain and possibly sell to various other clerks within the Black Market if it was any other day, but today she had been sent to get certain items by a certain person. Which meant more pay, but also meant she couldn't bargain the price up most likely.

It was a very clear trade off. Jill gave him the various items she had stolen from town, and he paid her a very grateful amount. Then the man almost seemed to disappear into the ally way with his goods. Afterwards Jill turned back to Mina who she hadn't entirely acknowledged since entering the Black Market. Giving a slight smile Jill shrugged and then spoke finally. "Welcome to the Black Market."

Mina couldn't help but feel like she was being watched as she and Jill made their way towards the Black Market. Of course, she was just being paranoid, but she had yet to do something illegal so publicly--sure, she sneaked into the woods every chance she got, and she stole whatever she could get her hands on, but that was all so...secret. And quiet. And not normally done in the light of day, right as everyone was getting off work and running errands. So this seemed somehow more dangerous.

As they approached the area known to all as the Black Market, Mina shoved her hands in her pockets and tried to keep her head down without looking like she was reluctant. She followed Jill blindly into the area, sneaking glanced out of the corner of her eyes. After a minute or so of weaving through the place, though, she had to look up. And she was surprised--there were people chatting and laughing and talking totally normally. Like a regular, legitimate market place. She supposed she had thought they'd all be...cloaked and veiled...sneaking around, running in every direction at the sight of a stranger or something. But that was clearly not the case.

She was so distracted looking around that she nearly slammed into Jill, who had stopped to trade things she had on her to some man in the middle of the market place. Mina glanced up at him; he wasn't exactly the sort she would want to associate with, but her eyes widened involuntarily at the sum he paid Jill for her goods. It was nothing to a normal family, but it was a fortune to someone from the slums. Mina glanced away, realizing she was probably being rude, spying on their deal, and then Jill turned her way.

Mina gave her a cautious smile and looked around again. "It's not really...what I expected," she said. "It seems so...normal. Like it shouldn't really be...illegal." She pulled her hands out of her pockets and crossed her arms, surveying the place. There were stands, of course, where people had set up their goods, but there were also deals going on in corners and in the middle of the space, much like the one Jill had just enacted. "What exactly do people sell here?" she asked, encouraged by the bustle of the place.

"It's not really...what I expected, It seems so...normal. Like it shouldn't really be...illegal." Mina's words made sense to Jill, almost all too much sense. The more Jill began to work here when she was younger, the less and less it felt as though it was an illegal transaction. When people typically imagine the Black Market, they picture people in cloaks who are sneaking around with shady deals. That wasn't really the image you saw once entering the Black Market, and though the shady deals were likely, the black cloaks were not. Jill just figured that she became so accustom to the Black Market that she didn't really see it as illegal anymore, but more so a way of life.

It was fun to have brought someone who was so new to the Market, because it seemed now that Jill actually was smart on at least one topic. Then it seemed Mina came up with another question, but a very good question at that. "What exactly do people sell here?"

A small smile came to Jill's face as she looked at a few different sales clerks. "Well..almost anything." Jill had to think on her response for a few moments. She had never really payed attention to what was sold, only to what she needed to collect. "Those items that you expected to be only for capitol can be found here. Some items might be like pearls, various gems and jewelery, medications, makeup, and just items that are not easy to get your hands on." Jill smiled and looked about a few more stands trying to get an idea of what they sell here. "Basically anything capitol just wants for themselves, the Black Market opens up for everyone else."

This has been Jill's second home and life since she had lost her parents. To Jill the mines have never been a option for work, she would much rather take the more dangerous and risky road but earn money at a reasonable rate, rather then play Capitol's games of social class.

Mina listened intently to Jill as she explained what exactly went on at the Black Market. She glanced around, noticing that the things Jill was mentioning were the things she saw mostly at the stands, the places that seemed more permanent. Things like medication, for sure...those were hard to come by in Twelve, even if you had the money. Gems and pearls and such luxuries were only for the very very rich, she imagined; she couldn't fathom what someone in her position, for example, would do with such items. But one thing was noticeably absent from Jill's list, and Mina's heart sank a little bit, even as she forced herself to ask.

"What about...game?" she inquired, glancing back at Jill. "I mean, I don't really have a lot of gemstones or anything, but I'm learning to hunt, and I could bring in some game once or twice a week...nothing too big...but would something like that sell?"

She wasn't sure if she wanted to hear the answer or not; it seemed as though this place was a bigger and more complicated game than she had imagined. Up until now, Mina had been small fries when it came to illegal activity. She had trespassed in the woods, of course, and broken up an abandoned house, she had stolen endless amounts of things, and had traveled to other districts in order to steal things. She was helping her brother train for the Games, and she was hunting in the woods and bringing food home so that her brother could save his money. All that was for survival. But selling here, that would be...for profit. For the future. For their own comfort, so they could open a bakery again, so they could get themselves out of the slums...all that seemed even more worth it, but somehow made it all seem even more illegal as well.

The girl seemed more interested then Jill thought she would be about the Black Market. For a moment she reconsidered everything that she had seen in the Black Market sales, and she was positive that she was missing a lot...but she had just listed off what the Black Market was most wanting for sales. Looking about the market for a few more moments, Jill thought on what various tasks she had to perform through her many years of working within the Black Market.

"Some game is liked," Jill thought for a few moments then looked about the Market for one sales person in particular. As soon as spotted Jill directed her head in his direction and looked at Mina. "He is one who would pay for game, but more so for the fur and some forms of meat from specific animals." Mina seemed more intrigued than someone who was just curious...She reminded Jill of herself when she was younger and first joined work at the Black Market.

"I can help you get involved in the market if you would like."
Jill gave a fairly soft smile as she offered almost like a job to Mina. She didn't offer it to her lightly due to what it entailed if you would to get caught...but Jill did understand life in the Slums and lives it just as Mina does. The extra money had to be handy. Jill shrugged slightly and looked over the facial on the girl, she seemed interested...Curious, and slightly excited with the thrill of the place.
