Maggie stood at the edge of District Eleven and shoved her hands in her back pockets as she weighed her options. She wasn't quite sure where she was going, actually, and it wasn't as though she had a map handy. She knew she ought to go where the fruits were, but she had heard that the orchards were supposed to be off-limits to visitors. Not that that really bothered her--but her mother didn't know she was here, and if she got arrested for sneaking into the orchards, how would Sandra know where to find her? She would worry, and Maggie didn't want to make her mother worry. At least, not on purpose.

That was sort of the whole point of today: to do something nice for her mother. And to get out of the house long enough that perhaps Sandra would have time to forget that Daisy had eaten all the basil off the counter and then pooped all over the floor. Maggie glanced down at her pet goat; Daisy was trouble, or so her mother said, and though they could certainly afford to feed a goat that provided them with milk in the future, they could not afford to keep one that didn't provide anything but consistently ate all the things Sandra needed to work. Her mother had been sterner than usual that morning, and Maggie had decided she needed to get Daisy out of the house for a bit. And perhaps do something nice for her mother in the process.

So she'd turned her feet for Eleven, half-walking, half-carrying Daisy as they went along. Sandra loved fruit, and they didn't get a whole lot of it--not for themselves at least. There were some common things she used in her concoctions--she had been using quite a lot of apricots lately, Maggie had noticed. She'd get some of those, to replace the basil, in a way. And some other fruits, some ones just for them, too. And maybe a couple for Daisy; if the goat had her own stock of food, perhaps she'd be less prone to eating Maggie and Sandra's.

"Which way, d'you think?" she asked the goat, but her pet had already sat down at her feet and was chomping happily away on the grass. Daisy was no help. Maggie looked up again and tried to decide--straight ahead, she could see houses, which meant town. She had come in from the right, but that could very well be towards the orchards--she could have passed them without knowing it. And to the left, there seemed to be nothing. More woods, way off in the distance. How was she to know?

Maggie sat down next to Daisy and crossed her legs. She could close her eyes, maybe, and concentrate, and the answer would come to her--she would feel the way to the fruit, she was sure. She closed her eyes and breathed in deeply, trying to forget where she was and focus just on finding the right way. She reached out slowly in front of her, stretching her hands out as if to grab onto the air, but she didn't feel any different, any tugging towards that way. She tried the right and the left--but nothing. No vibes. No vision. She breathed in again and tried to focus, sticking her arms out as if to wait for someone to grab her and pull her in the right direction.

Ashnan placed her hands behind her back as she watched her brother explain something to a woman, of course she had no idea of what they were saying. She could normally read lips, but her brother was covering his mouth so she wouldn’t be able to, it was frustrating to say the least, but she wasn’t about to say anything. Lactans had to have a reason as to why he would hide the conversation, she had learned to trust him and his judgment as he had her best interest at hand. Even though sometimes, like everyone else, he would underestimate her for being deaf, but it was bound to happen so Ashnan had learned to deal with it; her natural response to such a behavior was to do exactly was she was told she wasn’t able to do, to prove she was just like everyone else, that she could do the same as anyone who had been gifted with hearing.

Suddenly the woman said something, judging by her exaggerated facial expressions Ashnan could tell she wasn’t all too happy. Lactans looked at Ashnan for a few seconds before the bony finger of the woman pointed at her, she’s the collateral, her lips read. Ashnan wasn’t sure what collateral meant though, she had never seen that word before and thus she had never been able to ask Lactans to explain what it meant. She stared blankly at the woman and noticed Lactans shaking his head, he said something else but his mouth was still covered, clearly whatever collateral was it couldn’t be a good thing as Lactans seemed to be rejecting the idea over and over.

The woman reached her bony hand and grabbed his shoulder, but her brother shook it off and pointed his finger menacingly at the woman, Ashnan could tell he was angry, that much was obvious by the way he stood with his chest out and his jaw clenched. He looked like one of those animals when they were ready to attack, what was their name? She made the sign with her hand, tapping her forehead twice with her thumb as she made a three with her hand.
Rooster.

Lactans gave the woman another menacing look to the woman before he walked back to where Ashnan was, he looked at her confused by the positioning of her hand on her forehead, her thumb resting against it.
? he signed.
You look rooster! she signed with a smile, clearly not understanding the urgency of the situation. Lactans smiled, but it was a forced smile, one plagued with urgency.
I need you to run to the house. he finger-spelled, he wasn’t too good at normal signs, and his finger-spelling was sloppy, but it was far better than their mother and their grandma’s attempts. His syntax was far off from normal ASL but it didn’t bother her, as she understand he was simply signing English translated into her own language.
Why? she signed frowning slightly so he would know it was a question. He sighed and said something fast, but she couldn’t read his lips, she stared at him blankly so he finger-spelled it.
You need to bring back the red velvet bag under my bed. he said, his face was serious which meant he was not joking around.
Your D’s, sloppy. she said with a smile, something that under normal circumstances would make him laugh, but this time he didn’t even react.
Red velvet bag. Go! he signed before pointing in the direction of their house sternly, she sighed and nodded as she turned around and headed back into the fields towards their house in the middle of nowhere.

Ashnan clearly didn’t understand why exactly Lactans wanted her to hurry up, but she wasn’t about to question him, he had seemed so nervous before that it was clearly something important. The fields seemed empty that day, which meant most people who worked them were probably in lunch break, one of the few times when they were not expected to be slaving themselves in the fields. Suddenly she stopped because her eyes spotted something that was out of place, a white furry dot in the middle of the green fields, sitting down and chewing on what seemed to be some of the grasses the people in eleven worked so hard to upkeep. She frowned with a mixture of anger at the animal for destroying the fields and fear for it, as if it was discovered it would probably be turned into someone’s dinner. Eleven was poor so goat was viewed as a luxury meal.

As she approached the animal she noticed a girl next to it, how she had missed her Ashnan wasn’t sure, because now that she could see her she realized the girl was somewhat hard to miss. With her blonde hair it was obvious she was not from this District. She approached the girl and raised her eyebrows, she pointed at the goat.
? she signed, by tracing a question mark in the air, she placed her hands on her hips trying to look a lot tougher than she was in case the girl decided to be rude in any way, shape, or form.

Maggie had taken to humming while she tried to sense which direction she ought to go. Or while she waited for a vision to come to her and guide her on her quest for fruit. It was quite boring, waiting for visions, and she had a song stuck in her head. Her arms were tired of waving, and besides, if a vision was going to come to her, she would certainly notice it, whether she was waving her hands about wildly or not.

Legs folded up into a crossed position, Maggie leaned forward on her elbows, chin in hand, humming loudly, her eyes closed as she waited to find which way she was supposed to go. This was actually quite nice...and comfortable. And she was tired from walking so long...maybe if she took a nap, the directions would come to her in a dream.

She was contemplating how to ensure Daisy didn't wander off if she decided to take a quick visionary nap, when suddenly--she felt it! A change, a shadow falling over her, directly in front! She'd done it! Her eyes flew open--and she was greeted, not with a distinctive urge to run off in a certain direction but rather with the confused--and slightly threatening--face of a girl standing over her.

A bit deflated, Maggie's shoulders hunched. No vision. Oh well--maybe tomorrow. She shaded her eyes and looked up at the girl. "Hi!" she said cheerfully. "Is something wrong? I'm Maggie," she said, unfolding her legs and pushing herself to her feet, her hand stuck out cordially. "Daisy and I are looking for some fruit--hey! Are you from here?" she asked excitedly. "Do you know where we can find the fruit?!"

Ashnan had clearly not realized that the girl had her eyes closed, otherwise she wouldn’t have wasted her time signing her a question. Immediately though, before she was able to sign something else, the girl started speaking, she was smiling as she did, but she was speaking somewhat fast which made it hard for Ashnan to read her lips, either way she was not an expert on doing so. The girl’s hand was out stretched out between them and then she continued with her jibber jabber, Ashnan stared at the hand and grabbed it wondering if the girl wanted to be helped up or something.

With her other hand she pointed at herself then whacked her left index finger with her right and then pointed at her ear, I can’t hear. She put her index to her ear again and dragged it towards her mouth, Deaf. That had to do it, after all the signs were pretty self explanatory even for someone who was not used to them, she thought, maybe now the girl would speak slowly, then again maybe she should tell her. She placed her extended right hand against her mouth and brought it down, then placed it at the finger tips of her extended left hand and moved it up towards her forearm. Speak slow

She smiled to let the girl know she wasn’t angry or anything similar. In ASL it was all about body movements, facial expressions and correct use of the hands, all of which she excelled at, of course. The goat caught her eye once again and she frowned slightly somewhat worried that it would eat all the crops everyone had been working on harvesting for such a long time.
? she drew a question mark in the air and pointed at the goat, as if to ask the blonde girl why there was a goat chomping away happily.

Maggie's eyes widened as the girl started making motions with her hands. She had no idea what was going on, but the girl in front of her kept making motions, and Maggie was confused. Had she not been loud enough? Why wasn't the girl saying words? Was she an Avox?! Maggie had never met an Avox before...but then, the girl kept pointing to her ears. As if she hadn't heard her or something. And Avoxes could hear, Maggie was pretty sure. So then...

"You can't hear me?" Maggie asked, oddly intrigued. She had never met anyone who was deaf before, and she had no idea if they could talk or not...she had thought that it just meant you couldn't hear, but this girl was making motions instead of speaking. Too confusing for Maggie to follow; she wrinkled her brow as she tried to figure out what the girl meant, but she didn't know what her hands were doing.

"What's...what are you--" she started to ask, but then stopped as she watched the girl's hands go again.

The girl made some kind of mark in the air and looked pointedly at Daisy, and Maggie grinned. She was interested in the goat, but then, Daisy was so adorable, who wouldn't be interested in her? She pointed at her pet and tried to figure out how to tell the girl her goat's name. Was there a motion she could make to mean 'Daisy'? Or if she talked really loudly, would the girl maybe hear her?

"Daisy," she said, loudly, just in case the girl could maybe hear her. "Her name's Daisy. She likes grass." She pointed at the grass and gave the girl a thumbs up; it was rare enough for Daisy to eat what she was supposed to and not everything she wasn't supposed to.

She wanted to ask the girl again where she could find fruit, but she didn't know if she'd do it right. Or if the girl even understood her. "I'm looking," she said after a minute, pointing to her eyes, in case that would help. "For...fruit." She didn't know how to gesture to mean fruit, so she just said it really loudly, hoping that would somehow be helpful.

Ashnan didn’t think the girl was understand, which was somewhat frustrating, but she was used to it as most people didn’t really speak ASL and even worst most saw her as someone with a disability even though she was clearly not disabled. She could do anything anyone else could do, the only thing she couldn’t do was hear, she could even speak, very choppily as she had never heard the sound of the words, but she could try. The girl was still speaking, it was fast and it seemed like she was trying really hard but to Ashnan that meant nothing because she couldn’t understand anything.

The blonde suddenly pointed at the grass and gave her a thumbs up, which didn’t really mean much but at least she was trying, if Ashnan had to guess the girl was trying to tell her either she liked the grass or that it was comfortable. The girl then pointed to her eye and then shouted something, which Ashnan clearly did not hear. Ashnan frowned slightly as the girl had not continue signing, or trying to.

“Debf” she finally said, pointing at her ear, she wasn’t sure if she had pronounced it well, as she had to rely on the vibrations to form words. She didn’t know how to say enunciate though, as Lactans had never really let her feel that one; instead she decided to try a new method, as she assumed that fingerspelling it would not work for the blonde, she grabbed the blonde’s right hand and put her palm up holding it by the wrist with her left, then with her index finger she started writing the letters on her palm as if it was a notebook and her finger was a pencil.

E-N-U-N-C-I-A-T-E she paused for a few seconds to let her know she would have another word. R-E-A-D---L-I-P-S---S-L-O-W she looked up at the girl and gave her a thumbs up making sure her face had her eyebrows raised so she would know it was a question. Got it? she was hoping she would, otherwise this would just be frustrating.

Maggie's eyes widened as the girl spoke. That confirmed her suspicions, especially as she pointed to her ear. Deaf. Maggie had never met anyone who was deaf before, and suddenly, a whole new host of questions sprang into her mind, the quest for fruit on the back burner as her eyes widened at her new acquaintance.

The girl grabbed her hand, and Maggie looked at her curiously. She didn't understand what she was doing, making weird motions on her palm...and then she realized, as she caught the final few letters: she was spelling words. Trying to communication. Maggie grinned and concentrated as the other girl started spelling more words. She thought she caught the first word--read, and then...L-I-R-S? Lirs? What was a lir? And then something else, more identifiable--slow. Read something slow.

"Oh!" Maggie cried as the pieces clicked together in her brain. "You can read my lips?" she asked, speaking more slowly and trying to enunciate the words. "That's so cool!"

She grinned enthusiastically at the girl. "Is this how you talk?" she asked, motioning to her hand and making squiggles on it, as though writing. "Or like before, with the--" she made some gestures, poor imitations of what the girl had been doing before that had confused her. "With your hands?" she asked, waggling her fingers cheerfully up by her face.

Ashnan was glad that the girl seemed to have understood what she had been trying to communicate, it was always a great feeling when someone who knew no ASL and her could communicate effectively. She had very few times tried writing for others, as she felt she was capable enough to communicate her point without having to resort to such methods. But this time it seemed to be necessary especially when a goat was involved, and because she didn’t have the time to actually try other methods with the blonde girl, mostly because even though she couldn’t remember what it was, she knew she was supposed to do something.

The girl seemed to ask her if she talked with her hands, or by writing. Ashnan raised an eyebrow unsure of whether or not she had understood the girl correctly, as she found the question to be rather stupid. Then again, she had been born this way so it wasn’t like she wouldn’t know the information, she assumed has she been born privileged like the blonde girl in front of her she wouldn’t know as much about deaf culture like she did.

She moved her hands and made some gestures, just like the way the girl had done it before. And smiled, to relay that she was happy the other girl was understanding her. It was time, once again, to ask about the goat, because that was at that point in time the most important thing, as the goat could easily eat all the crops and get the other people from Eleven mad. The goat was tiny, but she had been explained before that animals like that one were known for eating far more than their size allowed them to.

Ashnan pointed at the goat once again, and frowned as she traced a question mark in the air where she was certain the blonde could see it. Then she placed her finger to her temple and brought it down making her hand end in a Y motion with the thumb and pinky pointing and the other three fingers down.
Goat? Why? and maybe this time the girl would understand.

Maggie grinned at the girl, glad she had figured out how this worked. She talked with her hands, she seemed to agree on that point, and Maggie was intrigued. How, she wondered, did people who were less perceptive pick up on communicating with this girl? Did she write things down? Or perhaps she only associated with those who could talk to her and understand her.

Or maybe all her friends were mind-readers.

That thought, actually ridiculous as it was, made Maggie's grin spread wider and more excited. What if she didn't need the girl to talk with her hands? What if she could read her mind instead?

That would be even better than having a vision.

The girl was making motions again and pointing at Daisy. She made a Y with her fingers, and Maggie understood what she had said, but not what she meant. Why did she have a goat? Well, why not? Daisy was her pet, and she liked to go places, and she was pretty sure if she had left her at home, her mother would have given her away by the time she got back.

"She's my friend," she explained, a quizzical expression on her face. "We're just on an adventure. We're looking for fruit, to take home to my mom. Hey, has anybody ever read your mind before?" she asked excitedly, changing topics as she felt like it, because she didn't know how to explain Daisy, and...well, she wanted to test out her as-yet undemonstrated mind powers.

The girl was smiling, which was somewhat endearing, in a way. At least she wasn’t frowning and being mean about the fact Ashnan couldn’t communicate in the same way as she did, like most girls she knew did in school. The other girl proceeded to give her an explanation, she seemed to be making an effort with speaking slower so Ashnan could attempt to read her lips, though she was by no means an expert and probably misinterpreted some words, or didn’t understand others she hadn’t learned.

The goat was the girl’s friend, and they were looking for some kind of fruit, it seemed. But she didn’t go into much detail or any detail at all, actually. Instead she asked her if she had ever had her mind read, Ashnan’s eyebrows raised as she had never heard of such a thing, or well, she had but she didn’t believe in it because it sounded very unlikely. If people could read her mind then they would always understand her, which was not the case.

She shook her head and then pointed at the girl, she extended her left hands index and middle finger while the other fingers were bent and extended her right hand, she used her two fingers to brush own her extended hand. She then proceeded to fingerspell mind; three fingers resting on thumb resting over pinky, pinky in the air, two fingers resting on thumb over fourth and pinky, index in the air while the other fingers create a circle.
You read mind? then realizing that the girl would probably not understand fingerspelling she pointed at her head and frowned her eyebrows to make it seem like she was concentrating on something hoping she would understand that one better. Mind

Maggie watched the girl carefully make her hand motions, her eyebrows screwed up in concentration as she tried to follow. She was pretty sure she had been asked if she was a mind-reader herself, though she wasn't utterly positive, but the notion of the question brought a quick smile to her face.

She nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah!" she said, hopping a little on the balls of her feet. "Well...not...yet," she admitted a bit sheepishly. "I mean, I'm trying to. My mom, she says I can do whatever I want if I really try, and I really want to see the future, but so far, no luck. I bet I could read your mind, though, because that's not in the future, right? That's happening right now!"

Maggie pulled her hands from her pockets and raised them up, palms facing the girl, as if she wanted to play a child's game of patty cake. "Put your hands on mine," she said firmly, pressing one of her palms to the other to try and gesture her meaning out, in case the girl couldn't read her lips, before she opened up both palms again.

"And then think something," Maggie instructed. "But think something like...big. I might not get real little thoughts. Just think it and don't think about anything else, and then I'll tell you what it is, okay?"

The other girl had said she was a mind-reader, an inexperienced one but a mind-reader non the less, Ashnan raised her eyebrows in surprise as she had never met someone who could read minds. She wasn’t even sure how much she believed that it was something possible, but who was she to question this girl? It would not only be rude, but if it was true, then that meant that there were people out there who she would have an easy time communicating with, a prospect that she couldn’t just reject.

Without much hesitation she placed her hands against the girls like the blonde had shown her, she frowned slightly feeling utterly ridiculous doing so, but instead tried to focus on the girls lips. The psychic girl wanted her to think of something big, so that she could see it. Ashnan closed her eyes as her mind went blank for a few seconds before the image of a horse came to her mind, that was pretty big, it was the biggest thing she had seen at least, well… besides trees but that one was far too obvious so a horse would have to do.

It was a white horse, galloping down the fields in Eleven, in it’s back was Ashnan, her eyes closed and both of her arms stretched out at either side of her body feeling the wind on her hair. Hitting her skin as the animal moved underneath her at a very even pace. It was peaceful and beautiful, and yet there was a certain rush that came from it.

She opened her eyes and nodded to let the psychic girl know that she could go ahead and try to guess what was going on. As she waited she couldn’t help but feel her heart beating against her chest wildly nervously awaiting to hear if the girl could guess what was on her mind or if it was all just a hoax.

Maggie was so excited, she had to refrain from hopping from one foot to the other. She had never offered to read someone's mind before, and she'd never encountered anyone who would have let her, nor someone whose mind she wanted to read so badly--it would be so much easier to communicate with the girl who couldn't talk if she didn't need to talk. If they could communicate with their minds...well, that would be perhaps the most spectacular thing that had ever happened to Maggie.

She waited until the girl had closed her eyes and was clearly thinking about something, and then...well, she meant to close her eyes and focus, but the expression that came over the other girl's face was so serene and peaceful--so free--that she couldn't look away. She could practically feel the strange excitement radiating from the girl in front of her, a sort of low-riding anticipation, as though there was something both calming and thrilling about whatever she was picturing in her mind, and Maggie could feel it, too.

But much as she might get that tingly sort of anticipatory feeling, she couldn't see anything. She closed her eyes and screwed up her nose and tried, but though she could understand the girl's excitement, she had no clear vision of what caused it. She opened her eyes again, just as Ashnan did, and gave her an encouraging smile.

"That was a big thought," she said, a bit wistfully. "But I don't know what it was. I couldn't see it."

Disappointed, she dropped her palms away from the other girl's. It wasn't the first time the powers she believed she held had failed her; they did so on a constant basis. She was always seeking to stretch them, to try them out, looking for things she believed were coming for her--and she had a hard time seeing what she could already do. Her instincts about people, her ability to connect to others and understand what they were feeling, that was extraordinary, according to her mother--but for Maggie, it was just a lead-in to the real stuff. When those powers were going to surface, she didn't know, but she was waiting anxiously.

"Was it the forest?" she guessed hopefully, remembering the very free sort of look on the girl's face, the current of excitement that rolled beneath it--like how Maggie felt when she explored in the forest, far away from all that was familiar, looking for something new and different and maybe even dangerous.

Ashnan had to admit she was pretty nervous about the possibility of this girl reading her mind, if it was something doable, then her whole life would be different, she wouldn’t have to be ostracized from society simply because she couldn’t hear like the rest of them. She would not have to worry about whether or not people would understand her, to find new ways for people to actually listen to what she had to say. This could be her future, this could be the answer to every single one of her prayers.

And yet…
“Was it a forest?” Ashnan blinked a couple of times, but she knew she had not misread the lips of the girl, she had certainly said a forest. It was like all of her hopes came collapsing down at once, there was nothing that she could do because it hadn’t worked. She had not been thinking of a forest, or anything close to a forest, how could the girl be wrong? It made no sense.

The look on the blonde in front of her was of pure disappointment though, and despite her hard-headed and stubborn nature Ashnan was not a mean person. What was a little white lie if that meant the girl would smile again? After all, she had been trying to help Ashnan and she had not called her a freak or pushed her around for being deaf, so she might as well help her. With her fist closed she moved it up and down, to sign a ye; then she placed her left arm horizontally across her chest and placed her elbow on the palm of her hand, she shook her hand to indicate a tree, she moved the arm down her horizontal arm and repeated the motion to indicate a forest.
Yes, forest. figuring the girl would probably not understand she nodded and drew the shape of a tree with her two hands, she smiled cheerfully as if she was completely impressed that the girl was a psychic.

There was nothing wrong with this small lie, was there? Her mother had always told her lying was wrong, but it was not like the girl would know it was a lie, and it would just make her happy. So why not?

Maggie might not have been fluent in sign language or have understood everything that it was the other url was trying to say to her, but she certainly understood that sign for yes. Immediately, her face lit up with delight, and she was so excited by this revelation that she actually pranced in place, hopping up and down from one foot to the other.

"Really?!" she cried excitedly. It was her first success with the powers she wanted so badly to possess--which she did possess, she reminded herself, but which were just being a bit shy about showing up. She had thought she hadn't really understood what the girl was thinking, that it wasn't quite clear--that it wasn't clear at all, really, but she so badly wanted the fact that she had read Ashnan's mind to be true that she didn't consider that it might have just been a lucky guess--or even worse, that the other girl was lying to placate her. Maggie's innate sense of honesty, her constant quest for the truth, would not lead her to believe that other people could be deceptive on instinct or so lightly. The thought didn't even enter her mind--nor would it.

She flung her arms gleefully around the other girl, hugging her in sheer delight, and then pulled away and clapped her hands, hopping from foot to foot again. "This is so exciting!" she said. "I've never done that before--this means my powers are working! They're real, and they're working!" She couldn't wipe the grin off her face at the thought--she was going to have something much better than fruit to take home to her mother today.

Right. Fruit.

"Hey, I bet I can find the fruit now!" she exclaimed. "Okay, okay, don't tell me...the fruit is...that way!" She pointed wildly off to her left, flinging her arm out dramatically as she waited for Ashnan to confirm her guess.
