• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Hazel yawned again, and though she desperately wanted to curl up and go back to sleep, she knew she couldn't. She didn't want to face the boy from Four, or worse. There was a whole host of miserable dreams her subconscious could create from those miserable six days. Instead, she just yawned again. "Maybe if I just close my eyes for a second..."

Waking up to the sound of your own screaming is a pretty awful experience. Waking up (even when you'd just started to doze off) to someone else's screaming is a different matter all together. Hazel awoke with a start, practically jumping out of her skin. Out of instinct, she reached her arm over to grab her knife off the night table that would've been there if she were home. When she grabbed nothing but air, the fear only increased. It was a few tense moments before her tired, confused brain realized that she wasn't at home, the Peacekeepers had taken her knife, and it was a good possibility that Ronan was about to make fun of her. "I don't know," she said, responding to Uaithne. She was still shaken, but was slowly calming down. Something about night just made her very jumpy.

Ronan whipped his knife out the moment he heard the scream. It wasn't until the second one came that he realized he was in no immediate peril, and he lowered the weapon. Whatever sorry bastard uttered the noise was probably getting into a helluva bash with the peacekeepers right now, though it was unclear if the scream or the peacekeepers came first. Still, he didn't put the knife completely away, and his heart still pounded in his chest.

"Probably just someone who couldn't mind his own business," Ronan said, pretending to be completely uninterested in the whole matter. Both Uaithne and Hazel had begun to fall asleep right before the scream; pity Uaithne had his sleep once more interrupted by screaming, though this time not his own. "Peacekeepers'll screw 'em over if they haven't already, don't worry."

He inhaled deeply and held his breath for a moment. No, he didn't want the peacekeepers to beat the shit out of someone, but it was better than the peacekeepers attacking him. So let the victim fend for himself.

Uaithne blinked. "What if they need help?"

Right now, Hazel was irrationally annoyed at the screamer. She had almost fallen asleep! Then again, maybe he should thank him for stopping her before it was once again her own screaming that ripped her from her dreams. "Could just be another victor," she said through yet another yawn. She hoped it was. Late-night scuffles with Peacekeepers weren't good for anyone. If it was just a victor, the Peacekeepers wouldn't give them any trouble. Sure, they'd be annoyed (s would their roommates), but they could get over it. If the Peacekeeper had come before the scream, that was when you had to worry.

"If they need help, then too bad for them," she said. Or someone inside could help them. "Pissing off the Peacekeepers isn't a very good idea, especially when it's late and they'd rather be sleeping." It was nice to see that Uaithne was still nice and wanted to help those in need, but interrupting Peacekeepers would just result in getting your ass beaten. Random district residents seemed to be doing a good enough job with that.

“But—” Uaithne started. Didn’t seem right that they’d let the peacekeepers beat the snot out of someone who didn’t deserve it, but so went life in the districts. Uaithne couldn’t shake off the part of him that wanted to help the person in need, and he looked warily between Ro and Hazel before giving up. They were right; it would only end in chaos for them if they interfered. True they were victors, but their voices meant nothing.

He reached for the bottle of alcohol and grabbed it by the neck. However, before he could take a swig, someone stumbled out of doors. Although it was dark, the person was clearly female, maybe in her forties or fifties, though Uaithne couldn’t determine from the shadowy features. She walked with uneven steps in their general direction.

“Can you believe it?!” she howled. “Can you believe them?”

"Uaithne, he'll be fine. Really." Hazel didn't know if that was true or not. Probably, it wasn't and whoever was being beat up by the Peacekeeper would greatly appreciate some help. That wasn't going to happen though. Tonight was already pretty awful, getting a beating wouldn't make it any better.

When she saw the boy grab the alcohol again, she frowned a bit. Alcohol really didn't make anything better in the long run. She probably would've been thankful for the woman bursting through the door had it not terrified her further. Instead, she jumped again and let out an embarrassingly high-pitched scream and once again reached for her nonexistent knife. "I need to get those Peacekeepers to give me my knife back," she muttered. She needed that thing. After taking a moment to calm down (again), she looked at the woman. "I have no idea what you're talking about," said Hazel, looking at the woman.

Uaithne started when the woman burst out in speech, and he saw the knife ready in Ro's hand. He had a knife stashed away in his own pocket, but he didn't reach for it. It was just a woman who probably couldn't sleep, either, and he had no cause for alarm. Regardless, Ro appeared tense and ready to defend if necessary.

"They take our children away from us, and now they treat us like animals!" the woman exclaimed as she continued her tirade. She motioned with her finger towards the door to the sleeping quarters. "But it gets better! Oh-ho, it gets better! They didn't give my little Timmy dinner today. Mocked him and said he was ugly, and now they refuse to let him use the bathroom!"

Uaithne bit the inside of his cheek. Yeah, that sounded like a Peacemaker thing. Playing on the people in order to show who was boss. But Uaithne also knew that marching up and demanding food and bathroom privileges for some kid was not going to happen. He glanced at his brother.

Ro leaned against the wall and looked at the woman coolly. He sat with one knee up and arm resting on the knee. A wisp of smoke twirled up from the cigarette between his fingers. The woman didn't seem to bother him at all, though he could see he still held the knife in his other hand, casually rubbing his finger against the handle.

"Go cry somewhere else, hag," he responded dully.

When Hazel heard why the woman was angry, she frowned at the injustice. Typical Peacekeepers, preying on the week just because they could. Hazel wanted so badly to speak out, to rebel, but that would be a stupid idea. At best, she'd get beaten and make an enemy out of the Peacekeepers. At worst... Those that couldn't hold their tongue could easily get it cut out. Actually, victors probably wouldn't be made into avoxes; their faces were too recognizable. That wasn't to say that the Capitol didn't other horrors in place for victors that spoke out.

She gave Ronan a look when he spoke rudely to the woman. Could he just be civil for once? Still, she did nothing further. Picking a fight with Ronan wouldn't end any better than picking a fight with the Peacekeepers. Instead, she just yawned. Then, she looked back at the woman, unsure of how to respond. "I'm... sorry?" she tried. There was uncertainty in her voice, she had no idea if it would just make the woman direct her anger towards Hazel instead of the Peacekeepers. The tone would probably kill what little chances that response had at being the right one, but she didn't really care. All she had to do was hold out until morning and it would get better.

Uaithne said nothing, but the woman appeared outraged at Ronan's words. Her eyes narrowed at him, and her face darkened in the poor light. Uaithne busied himself with another drink of alcohol, wondering as he poured the liquid into his mouth if it would help him fall asleep or only give him more horrific nightmares.

The woman's mouth opened, and she continued, "Do you not see what--"

BAM!

And then the woman's head and brains and blood and skull fragments splattered through the air, raining down on anything and anyone nearby. Uaithne flinched, and his heart pounded so hard in his chest that he couldn't think, and he found himself sitting right next to Ronan that he was practically clinging to him without remembering how he had even gotten there. The bottle of alcohol lay shattered on the ground with the blood and brains though Uaithne couldn't recall dropping it in the first place. It didn't matter. He buried his face in Ronan's shoulder.

Ronan was about to roll his eyes at the woman when he heard a gunshot and saw the woman’s body fall to the ground, half of her head missing. And then he realized that he located the missing parts of her head, for they were everywhere strewn across the ground and those who were unlucky enough to sit on the concrete steps next to the building. The warmth of blood and brain matter on his face made his stomach roll, and it wasn’t until a few seconds later that he realized that the woman was dead, and a few more moments before he concluded that someone had shot her. Uaithne clung to him, and at first Ronan wanted to shove him off, but he only looked up towards the doorway and saw a Peacekeeper disappear.

“Hoooooly shit,” he whispered, his eyes wide.

Hazel watched the woman open her mouth to speak. She felt awful for her and her kid. However, she wished she would stop talking. All it would do was get her in trouble. But before she could get a word out, there was gunfire, and the woman's head was splattered on the walls, ground, and Hazel instead of on top of her shoulders where it belonged. Without realizing how she got there, she found herself clinging to Uaithne, shaking like a leaf. After a moment, her brain started working and she let go of him, scooting a few inches away. Slowly, the reality of the woman's death sunk in. Once again, Hazel had witnessed a life be snuffed before her very eyes. She hugged her knees as tears begin to fall, suddenly unable to remove her mind from her final hours in the arena, the last time she'd had this much blood on her. Then, a thought came to her. What about the kid she was talking about? What was his name? Tommy? The poor child. First being mistreated by the Peacekeepers, then to have his mother killed. He'd really drawn the short straw in life.
