• Next Hunger Games
    Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Phoenix hated doing signings. This was mostly because they almost always ended up with his hand in a bucket of ice water by the end of the day for one and off of an hour or three (to prevent himself from developing hypothermia, he would usually switch it off with laying it under a heating pad or something) and because the hawk-like regard of his publicist always seemed to put him on edge and make him far more nervous than usually.

Still, he couldn't say he minded the fans he got to interact with. They tended to be fun, if sometimes a bit overbearing.

He preferred the kind of creeping nervous energy before shows or the adrenaline running through him after it, if he was being honest.

He'd slipped away, commenting that he was fine to take his own car home and definitely did not need to be babysat by him (or wanted to be so scrutinized for much longer). He pressed through to the elevator along with another man. He jabbed a button to go to the basement floor that let out into a parking structure and leaned against a wall, being careful to not look behind him into the window that looked out onto the floors below.

The last thing he wanted was to panic from noticing just how high up he was.

Faustus had worked hard all week long, so now that the weekend was here, he had planned on shopping until he dropped. He succeeded in his plans, and his arms were full of shopping bags by the end of the day. His feet were sore, and all he wanted was to make it home, go out for supper at a fancy restaurant, and snuggle up at night to watch some television.

He stepped into an elevator to make the trek down to the bottom floor of the mall, along with another man. Faustus thought he recognized him.This was the singer who was starting to gain some popularity, wasn't he? The man's name was just on the tip of his tongue, and he was almost certain it had to do with a bird. Was it Robin? No... Anyway, it didn't matter. They would both be on their own separate ways as soon as they made it to the bottom floor.

Faustus watched as the red haired man next to him a button to make it to the basement, and he couldn't help but notice the singer's handsome facial features. His baby blue eyes glared into a wall of the elevator, and a few red hairs protruded from his chin. Faustus couldn't help but think he would be excellent arm candy. Ah, he could picture it now. Faustus with his tribute's parading around in a chariot while the singer stood by him, holding his hand ever so gently, watching from an exclusive box above the other Capitol citizens. The stylist got lost in his daydreams as the elevator began to bring the pair down to the basement.

In his boredom, Phoenix did recognize the man next to him, if only because he was one of the Hunger Games stylists. He never had a particular love for his own publicist for a new-found emphasis to find a stylist (he never needed one before, what changed to need one now?) if only because of their main association with all vying to design for the Games... Something that even now he had to very carefully bite his tongue on talking about.

But even as he considered this, the elevator jolted and the lights above and below them flickered. Light from the open glass still filtered in, but that didn't change the shaking. Phoenix stumbled by the force and grabbed at the wall, leaning against it.

Eventually, the shaking stopped and Phee stayed there, catching his breath for a moment, trying to mentally clear his brain as he did so. What the hell had just happened?

While daydreaming, Faustus heard a loud crashing sound. The dim lights that surrounded him began to flicker quickly, and Faustus stumbled back, with his body slamming into one of the elevator's walls.

What the hell had just happened? He had overheard some horror stories about faulty elevators at a dinner party he attended a while ago. Was he doomed to eventually fall down until he crashed against the basement floor? The man was starting to get scared now, something that didn't usually happen.

He tried to shove the thought of having been in an elevator accident out of his head. Soon he would be brought down to the basement where he would walk out of the confined square and into his dark purple car. But what if he didn't? A voice in his head kept telling him that he was stuck, and that he would be here for a while.

"Um, do you know what's happening?" Faustus asked. Maybe the younger man knew what was happening. Or, in a more likely event, the other passenger had no clue what was happening, just like Faustus.

Phoenix looked to the older man and shook his head. "Uh... elevator broke down?" He offered vaguely. For all of the supposed advancement that the Capitol had, elevators breaking down apparently was at least possible, if not exactly what Phoenix would consider normal.

The tiny box of trapped air seemed to have stopped entirely and, while the lights from inside were not working, the light from outside the glass that filtered in still supplied something close to enough. Phee moved carefully, feeling along the wall towards the panel of buttons and started scanning over them before pressing one that was clearly marked for an emergency.

Static came over from what he figured was some kind of speaker he could not see and Phee covered his ears as it blurred out, hearing snippets of harried voices speaking before it cut out entirely again.

Faustus was really starting to freak out. He wasn't used to being in such small quarters like this. He was used to being free in a mall, able to move wherever he pleased. In fact, he barely put up with moving into the launching room each Hunger Games to see his tributes off.

The musician pounded on an emergency button, and scratchy, muffled voices over head began to talk. Was this just a nervous delusion? No, of course it wasn't. That sort of thing only happened in stories. He just needed to take deep breaths and count to ten. He had saw that doing that was supposed to calm you down in some tabloid magazine he bought impulsively one day.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

He still didn't feel any better. "H-has this ever happened to you?" Faustus asked the younger man. He realized he still hadn't even asked the lad his name, but that was a mere social informality, and beside, he was about to have a full-blown panic attack. There would be time for getting to know each other later.

Phoenix turned to the other guy in the elevator and shook his head. "No. I mean... I don't take elevators much." He preferred stairs, even if they were a bit more harsh on his feet and draining on his body in excess. Still, he preferred them, more than a little in part because of the fact that these glass elevators were such a damned popular design in this city.


"But, I mean, even if they can't hear us, they'll have to know what's going on. Someone from... from..." He gestured back vaguely towards the glass, "Someone from out there will probably notice that this isn't moving sooner or later." Or someone waiting on an elevator or something... Although whether that would actually mean they got out in a reasonable time frame was certainly beyond Phee's knowledge.
