• Next Hunger Games
Our next Hunger Games is a little different than our previous ones. Called "Battle Royale," this Hunger Games will feature one lucky class to be sent to the Hunger Games together. Mr. Dressler's honors history class tried to ignite revolution in Panem. And for their trouble, they will be sent to the arena together. Join us by making a high school junior (16-17 years old) from District 11. See the Battle Royale Subforum for more information. We aim to start in December so now's the time to start developing your character!

Malcolm was at the back of the stall his father owned at the fish market, his knife scraping at the scales of a fish he was holding. Might as well get some work done as he waited, right? This is where he had told the kid to meet up. He wasn’t quite sure how much Merc knew of the trade, but once he’d found out they’d go from there. It was always good to gauge another’s skills and to start off with the basics. Once that was learned, then it would be time to add on. And keep adding until there wasn’t really anything else to be learned.

Augustus, one of the fishmongers Malcolm worked with, ambled over. He stopped beside the youth and watched him for a moment, crossing his arms over his chest. “Say, when’s that kid comin’?” he asked before he leered, “Betcha he got too scared and decided not ta show.”

“He’ll be here, Augustus,” Malcolm replied calmly as he worked. He had no doubt about that; the kid would show.

"Mercurius, get up." his mother said softly. Merc had told her to wake him up an hour early so he could be ready on time. This is what he should be doing for school, but the Games were obviously more important to him than he had thought. After a long while of thinking about how he was going to approach this, he decided to just go in head high, chest out, eyes up. Of course not literally, but he had to be prepared for anything, especially with what he knows of the Games going on now. And if this was going to help him, he would need to toughen up, smarten up, and straighten up. He needed to more dependable more on himself than his mother. He needed to stop trying to blame all his problems on other people. He needed to say what he needed to say. Open up his mouth. And let the words fall out.

After getting up, he had enough time to take a shower, iron clothes, eat a banana, brush his teeth, and get dressed. After that, he had a few minutes to spare before he had to leave, in which he mentally prepared himself for the day. "You can do this," he said. "Believe in yourself." This actually helped him more than he had thought, because when he walked out of the door, his persona became very confident all of a sudden, Carpe diem. He made his way down to the stall that Malcolm's father owned at the fish market, where they were to meet up, where he saw Malcolm, and another guy standing there. He walked over to them and greeted them, "Good morning," he said calmly.

With a quick stroke, Malcolm severed the fish’s head from its body and began the process of filleting it. Augustus still stood at his side, cracking jokes about the kid who might not show up. Malcolm did let it go to him, that’s exactly what the man was trying to do: get beneath his skin and irk him. Malcolm just tuned the man out. It came easy these days, and he was glad for it.

A voice made Malcolm turn his head, he then looked over at Augustus and raised a brow as if to say, “See? What did I tell you?” The man turned away frowning, grumbling to himself. Malcolm basked momentarily in triumph before he turned to Merc. “Morning. You ready?”

Mercurius watched as Malcolm did whatever he was doing to the fish, because he didn't know. Well this was the time to learn. He'd need to know everything before he would enter the arena. Now that he's starting to try to work out at least a little, he's getting a little stronger. "Yes," he said. Malcolm seemed to be a little different. Happy almost? The first time they met he seemed a little stubborn, like he didn't want to talk, so this welcome was a little surprising to Mercurius. He didn't mention it though, just was silently grateful.

Malcolm finished up cutting the meat from body of the fish. He then browsed over it to remove any pin bones that were left in the meat with a small pair of pliers before he set it aside and tossed the rest of the carcass away. Setting down the knife and pliers he had been using, he looked over at Merc. “So, what do you know of fish and fishing?” He then pulled off his gloves and set them on the cutting board before he leaned back against the counter.

Malcolm silently hoped that the kid knew a bit of the basics and he wouldn’t have to start from scratch, but if that wasn’t the case, then from the very beginning they’d start.

Mercurius thought and looked down for a second to gather his thoughts and prior knowledge. "They swim.. and you have to kill it of course to eat it.. and clean it somehow probably." he replied. He was just guessing at this point. He had no idea how to even approach or attempt to do anything to a fish. Maybe capture it in a net or something, but after that, it'll be flopping until it dries out. He'd have to get the D4 girl to help him out or something, assuming most of the other tributes don't know much about fish.

Malcolm wanted to face-palm at the answer. The kid knew nothing; that much was obvious. Augustus started cracking up and Malcolm sent him a sharp glance, which made the man fall silent, before he looked back at Merc.

“All right. So we’re going to have to start at the very beginning.” Great... Well, I said I’d teach him, so I’ll teach him.

He picked up his gloves and pulled them on before he picked up a whole fish by its eyes. He then held it up for Merc to see. “So, fish. This is a salmon. Specifically a sockeye salmon. It has gills and a gill cover,” he pointed to each. “It also has a number of fins; I’ll tell you the specific names for them later. We catch a variety of fish in nets, or with a line and pole. Today, I’ll show you how to fish with a line, okay?”

Merc stood there in silence as Malcolm began to tell him what they would be doing today. A line? Is that like.. A line, what? Mercurius nodded as Malcolm continued to talk about the salmon. "Gills and a gill cover.. got it." he said. What the heck was a gill cover? Don't all fish only have like 2 or 3 fins? And they have names too? What? This is what he asked for, so this is what he was going to get, and he couldn't take anything back now. It was time to step it up. "Fish line, okay." he said with a little smile, which could be fake.

Looks like the kid wasn’t getting it. Maybe Malcolm would have to take things a bit slower for him.

Placing the fish on a board, Malcolm bent to pull out a tackle box from under one of the tables. He’d brought it specifically today to do this. Opening it up, he pulled out two hooks. Standing, he held them in his palm so Merc could see.

“I have two hooks here. One is called a J hook because it looks like a J. The other is a circle hook. It’s well, basically a circle. They both have the same anatomy though. The point, the very end of the hook, is where the fish will bite and hopefully get caught. The barb, the backward point, helps keep the fish on the hook. And then you have the bend, easy enough, and then the shank. The shank attaches the eye to the bend. The eye, the loop, is the very end of the hook. This is where you’ll attach the line later. There’s also the gap. The gap is the width of the hook, from point to shank.

“Now, when you’re fishing, the size of the hook is very important. You can’t catch a small fish with a big hook, and you can’t catch a big fish with a small hook. Either you’ll lose the bait and not get anything, or the hook will straighten out and you lose the fish.” Malcolm paused, letting his words sink in.

Mercurius wished that he had some paper and a pencil or something so he wouldn't have to remember all of these things so quickly. Of course in the Games, he wouldn't be able to bring anything like that in, mostly because of embarassment, and because everyone would expect him to just know anyways. Hopefully there would be a Training Station before the Games that teaches how to fish, or make nets, or something of the sorts. Mercurius didn't comment on the first part, but the second he did. "That makes sense," he said. He tried not to show much emotion, so Malcolm wouldn't be worried, but the ending part Merc did understand, so at least this time around he was actually telling somewhat of a truth. "Okay so the shank thing. The eye attaches to it? I thought that the fish got caught on the hook by it's mouth, not it's eye." he said.

Uhhhhhhhh… What?

Malcolm could hear Augustus openly laughing behind him. He pressed his lips together, trying to think of how to make this easy for Merc to understand. This was going to be harder than he’d thought.

“Yes, the eye is attached to the shank, but the fish is caught by its mouth, not by its eye.” He said slowly, setting down the circle hook before he held up the J hook. “You see this loop here, yeah? It’s called the eye of the hook. This is where you tie your line. The part of the hook that catches the fish is the point.” Malcolm reached over and picked up the fish. “The fish will bite the bait, thus biting the hook where the point is and the hook will get stuck in the fish’s mouth.” He showed Merc the loop of the hook, saying, “Eye of the hook,” before he flipped the hook over to show the point, “Point of the hook. Got it? The point goes into the fish’s mouth.” He demonstrated as he said it, and then held the fish up by the hook.

“Do you understand, Merc?”

Mercurius watched Malcolm as he showcased the Eye of the hook. Mercurius nodded. Everything was suddenly to begin making sense. "Yes," Merc did understand exactly what Malcolm was saying. It was a miracle clearly. And maybe a spark of his D4 genes just came up into his thoughts and began to pump his intelligence, who knew? "I understand. Yes sir." he said. If he had a test over this at the end of the lesson, he knew that he would get this part of the test right, no doubt about it. It made the most sense.
